In about 5 billion years, our Sun will run out of fuel and transform into a massive red giant. When that happens, Earth could either be torn apart by intense gravitational forces—or swallowed entirely. Even if it survives, life as we know it won’t. New research shows just how deadly our Sun's evolution will be for any nearby planets… and Earth is no exception. From boiling oceans to a vanished atmosphere, this is our planet’s fiery future.

Will Earth survive the Sun’s wrath—or vanish without a trace?

00:00What if I told you the Earth is on a countdown to being swallowed by the Sun?
00:04Scientists now believe that in just five billion years,
00:08our Sun will run out of fuel and transform into a monstrous red giant.
00:12As it grows up to a thousand times bigger, it could either tear
00:16Earth apart or pull us in completely. New research from
00:20UK astronomers shows that when stars hit this deadly phase, they start
00:24dragging nearby planets inward through tidal forces, just like the moon
00:28tugs at Earth's oceans, only way more extreme. Out of nearly half
00:32a million stars studied, planets close to red giants rarely survived.
00:36The ones that did? They're barely hanging on. Scientists
00:40say this could be Earth's future, too, even if we're not the first to go.
00:44Even if Earth escapes being swallowed, the rising heat will fry our
00:48planet, strip its atmosphere, and boil our oceans. Life won't stand
00:52a chance. So, will Earth be destroyed? Or just abandoned?
00:56Either way, the Sun always wins.
