Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to the mountainous north to help trap a surge of bears that have killed 12 people and injured dozens this year. In Akita Prefecture’s town of Kazuno, residents have been warned to avoid forests, stay home after dark, and carry bells to deter the bears. Record sightings and abandoned farmland have pushed local authorities to request military support, with troops assisting in transporting and setting traps while trained hunters carry out culling operations. Officials warn that despite precautions, the high bear population continues to make incidents inevitable.

01:21Bear prone, so there is a high level of awareness about bears.
01:26Unfortunately, this year, there have been 7 casualties, so even if we are careful, the
01:44number of casualties has not decreased due to the large number of bears.
02:02We can't handle bears like ghosts.
02:26In the past, there were fields and rice paddies at the foot of the mountain, but due to population
02:55decline, these areas have stopped being built and have become bases for farming, which has
03:07led to a very close relationship with bears.
