00:00Prince William and Kate Middleton decided to break this royal tradition at Prince George's Christening.
00:06It's no secret that Prince William is keen to modernize the monarchy when he takes the throne,
00:11and he unsurprisingly is already shaking things up before that day comes.
00:17One of his earliest breaks from royal tradition actually took place at his eldest son Prince George's Christening,
00:23and while it might seem like a small detail,
00:25it quietly signaled a big shift in how the future king sees the royal family's future.
00:32Prince George was christened at the Chapel Royal at St. James's Palace in October 2013.
00:38Although Prince William and Kate Middleton followed royal protocol by informing the late Queen Elizabeth,
00:44the second first of Prince George's birth, they broke tradition at his Christening three months later.
00:50On October 23rd, 2013, George was christened in an intimate ceremony at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace,
00:59wearing a handmade replica of Queen Victoria's daughter's 1841 christening gown.
01:06Afterward, the Duke and Duchess hosted a private tea at Clarence House,
01:10serving cake made from a tear of their wedding cake.
01:14So far, so traditional.
01:16But what exactly broke royal protocol?
01:18How did Prince George's christening break with royal tradition?
01:24According to royal expert and courtier's author, Valentine Lowe,
01:28the ceremony was in many respects a very traditional royal christening.
01:34However, the Cambridges broke from custom when choosing George's godparents.
01:39Instead of filling the list with senior royals and aristocrats,
01:43only one of the seven was from the royal family.
01:46A clear break with tradition.
01:48While Prince William's own godparents included King Constantine II of Greece
01:54and Lord Ramsey, Prince George's sole royal godparent was William's cousin, Zahra Tyndall.
02:01The rest were close friends, including Julia Samuel,
02:05Amelia Jardine Patterson,
02:06Oliver Baker and William Van Cutsum.
02:10William and Kate broke tradition for Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis' christenings too.
02:17Princess Charlotte, who was christened at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in July 2015,
02:22has a lineup of godparents made up entirely of close friends and loved ones.
02:28Prince Louis was christened at the chapel royal at St. James's palace,
02:33and his six godparents were chosen from the couple's inner circle.
02:37he was christened at the chapel royal at St. James's palace.
