Holy water blessed by Pope Leo reaches Rio's Christ the Redeemer for COP30

A ceremony at Christ the Redeemer on Monday, November 3, marked a key moment in a climate-focused pilgrimage from Greenland to the Amazon, celebrating the arrival in Brazil of water blessed by Pope Leo XIV during the Raising Hope for Climate Justice conference. The water, extracted from a melting block of Greenland ice, is travelling through Brazil’s most iconic religious sites ahead of the COP30 climate summit.

The event, presided over by Father Josafa Carlos de Siqueira, episcopal vicar for the Environment and Sustainability of the Archdiocese of Rio, brought together representatives of the Catholic Church, civil society organizations, and socio-environmental leaders. It concluded with the illumination of the monument in blue to symbolize climate awareness.

The initiative—led by the Laudato Si’ Movement and supported by the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB)—aims to unite faith, science, and environmental action. The water will be presented in Belem, Para, where the COP30 summit will take place. Organizers say the gesture is a call for urgent and structural action in response to the climate crisis.
