Full Circle Africa cofounder Boris Kodjoe told the Fortune Global Forum that he wants to make sure people understand that African American history “didn’t start 400 years ago.”

00:00Africa's diaspora is the third biggest country in the world after China and India.

00:04It's very powerful.

00:05And what we have tried to do with Full Circle is,

00:09when we first started producing a year of return,

00:12we focused on connectivity,

00:15on celebrating collective heritage and ancestry as your superpower.

00:21And I think what's also very important to point out is that

00:25through that celebration came a sense of identity

00:30that a lot of African-Americans were lacking.

00:33And making sure people understand is that our history didn't start 400 years ago.

00:37And therefore, we're not descendants of slaves,

00:39but we're descendants of people who created vast civilizations and royalties and so on.
