00:00Why does China have 24 seasons?
00:02While the rest of the world rotates among four seasons,
00:05Chinese are going through 24 periods every year.
00:08They divide each season into six periods,
00:10which means a year is specified more clearly in terms of weather changes.
00:14For instance, the onset of winter is differentiated from the mid-winter,
00:18as each period has distinctive temperatures and snowfall intensity.
00:21Why do Chinese have so many seasons?
00:23Around 2,500 years ago, Chinese people determined 24 sections in the ecliptic,
00:29Earth's revolution orbit.
00:31Each section is called a solar term and represents a unique period of a year.
00:35The 24 solar terms were originally worked out mainly for farming.
00:38People began to sow in February's Jingze, or The Waking of Insects,
00:42and transplant rice seedlings in May's Mangzhong, or Grain in Ear.
00:47Some solar terms have become Chinese festivals.
00:49Qingming, or Tomb Sweeping Day, in April is a national holiday for mourning deceased family members.
00:55In December's Dong Zhih, or Midwinter, most northern Chinese eat jiaozi, or dumplings.
01:00In the early December this year, the 24 solar terms were inscribed onto the representative list
01:05of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
