Today, November 3rd, the Church celebrates Saint Hubert of LiĂšge, an 8th-century bishop.
00:09
known throughout Europe as the patron saint of hunters, foresters and all those who live off nature.
00:17
His legend, passed down through the centuries, tells of a man transformed by a mystical encounter in the heart of the forest.
00:24
that of Christ himself, in the form of a luminous stag.
00:28
Hubert was born around 655 into a noble family in Aquitaine.
00:35
He grew up at the court of the Merovingian kings where he led a life of luxury and pleasure.
00:41
An excellent horseman and passionate hunter, he spends his days pursuing game in the Ardennes forests.
00:48
gradually forgetting God and prayer.
00:51
But everything changes on Good Friday, when he is hunting alone in the forest,
00:55
indifferent to the Passion of Christ celebrated on that day.
01:01
Before him appeared a stag of unparalleled majesty.
01:05
A luminous cross appears between its branches.
01:09
The deer stares at him intently.
01:12
And Hubert hears a voice that tells him,
01:13
"Hubert, how long will you chase beasts in the forests, forgetting your Creator?"
01:21
"Repent, and the Lord will grant you eternal life."
01:27
Overwhelmed by this vision, Hubert dismounts, kneels, and weeps.
01:33
He sheds his hunting clothes and renounces his former life.
01:37
Shortly afterwards, he retired to Maastricht.
01:41
where he became a disciple of Saint Lambert, a zealous bishop and holy pastor.
01:47
After Lambert's martyrdom,
01:49
Hubert succeeded him as bishop of Maastricht, then of LiĂšge.
01:53
He then revealed himself to be a man of peace and prayer.
01:56
tirelessly traversing his diocese to convert the pagans,
02:00
to help the poor and care for the sick.
02:02
It is said that he had the gift of miracles.
02:07
He healed the wounded, calmed wild beasts
02:10
and protected men from the bites of rabid dogs.
02:15
His cult spread throughout medieval Europe.
02:19
The hunters invoked his name before heading into the forest.
02:21
and the keys of Saint Hubert, small pieces of blessed iron,
02:26
They were used to treat animal bites.
02:28
He died a holy death around 727 in Tervuren, near Brussels.
02:35
and his body is transferred to Andage.
02:37
which would later be known as Saint Hubert in Belgium
02:40
where a majestic shrine is dedicated to him.
02:45
Saint Hubert embodies the conversion of the heart.
02:49
It reminds us that even the most intense passions
02:51
can become paths to God,
02:53
if we bring the light of faith to it.
02:54
Hunters' Prayer to Saint Hubert
02:58
O glorious Saint Hubert,
03:02
patron saint of hunters and model of conversion,
03:05
you who saw the cross of Christ in the forest,
03:08
enlighten our hearts so that we may respect every creature.
03:14
Give those who go into the woods a sense of proportion.
03:17
gratitude and peace.
03:19
Protect them from danger
03:22
and teach us to recognize,
03:24
in the beauty of nature,
03:26
the reflection of the Creator.
03:29
Saint Hubert,
03:30
intercede for us.
03:32
so that our passions may become prayers
03:34
and that our actions bring glory to God.
03:37
Amen.
