Russian forces have unveiled a new field modification nicknamed “assault hedgehogs” — tanks fitted with massive steel cable structures, mine roller systems, and electronic warfare devices designed to counter FPV drones on the front line. Images released by the Telegram channel Vodohray show a T-80BVM equipped with a TMT-K mine roller and a T-72B3 with a KMT-7 roller. Both vehicles feature large cage-like superstructures densely wrapped in steel cables covering the upper, rear, and partially front sections of the turrets and hulls. Additionally, the tank chassis are also wrapped in multiple layers of cables, giving them a distinctive “metal hedgehog” appearance. In the case of the T-80BVM, an electronic warfare system has been mounted on top of the cable framework, further enhancing its defensive capability against enemy drones. According to analysts, this improvised protection is designed to combat FPV (First Person View) drones, which are widely used for precision strikes against armored vehicles. Unlike standard metal cages — known as “barbecue” or “carport” armor — the new structures can damage drone propellers, entangle their fuselage, and neutralize explosive warheads before direct impact. However, experts note that such adaptations significantly increase the vehicle’s weight and size, reducing mobility and complicating maintenance in battlefield conditions.
