00:00:00This is one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life.
00:00:13Have volunteered to take part.
00:00:15The only hope of escape is for your rescue to find you.
00:00:17Fail and you will be eliminated.
00:00:19In the ultimate search and rescue mission.
00:00:22The clock starts now.
00:00:24The biggest endurance test of their lives.
00:00:32Train departs in 10 minutes.
00:00:35You've got to move quick, we've got to be quick.
00:00:38One wrong foot could be my last.
00:00:44Run brother, run.
00:00:45From all walks of life.
00:00:47We are both full time plus size models.
00:00:49Brothers.
00:00:50Andrew saved me, I owe everything to this bloke.
00:00:53Best mates.
00:00:54Derek and I met more than 35 years ago.
00:00:56We were in the South Australia police and I was shot 14 times.
00:01:00Husband and wife.
00:01:02We have two little boys at home.
00:01:03I would literally do anything for my family.
00:01:05In-laws.
00:01:06I was a stunt woman in Hollywood.
00:01:08My first impression of Kai was what an amazingly tough woman.
00:01:13Father and daughter.
00:01:14She was born so the universe could give me a taste of my own medicine.
00:01:19Let's get this baby kicked.
00:01:20Kick it in her dick mate.
00:01:21Love you.
00:01:22Love you.
00:01:23Each team has been separated.
00:01:25No!
00:01:26One must race against the clock to find their teammate.
00:01:30Where am I going?
00:01:31120 metres up.
00:01:33Oh, I'm exhausted.
00:01:35My body's tired.
00:01:36My mind is tired.
00:01:37But I'm trying to go as fast as I can.
00:01:42Far out.
00:01:44Really hoping these ropes don't break.
00:01:47The other is locked up in a secret location.
00:01:51This is the most confined I've ever felt.
00:01:53Oh my God.
00:01:54And must direct their partner to find them.
00:01:58Our next box contains a map to the rendezvous point.
00:02:02This is frustrating me.
00:02:03I know he's going to be angry.
00:02:05I feel like I'm letting him down.
00:02:07I'm about to throw this thing off the cliff.
00:02:10As they face their fears.
00:02:11How the hell are we going to do it?
00:02:13Are you going to have to crawl through a sewer?
00:02:15That's insane.
00:02:17Their relationships will be tested.
00:02:20Always a worrying time when you know your kid could get hurt, she could die.
00:02:24It's getting harder each day.
00:02:25And they'll be pushed to their limits.
00:02:28Why is she still in the same place?
00:02:30What have you been doing?
00:02:31I'm doing my absolute best, Dave.
00:02:35I don't want to be in here.
00:02:38But if they can battle through the pain.
00:02:41I'm struggling.
00:02:43I don't know how much more I've got in me.
00:02:46Just too painful.
00:02:50That's when I knew I had to pull the plug.
00:02:55Those who free their partner in time.
00:02:58Any wrong move could cost you.
00:03:01Oh, my God.
00:03:02This is brutal.
00:03:04We'll share in $100,000.
00:03:07Winning this will change our life.
00:03:09We're there, Derek?
00:03:10We're there.
00:03:11We're not going to make it.
00:03:12Can they pull off?
00:03:14The ultimate escape.
00:03:16I'm coming!
00:03:25Surrounded by New Zealand wilderness, 10 Australians are about to be locked up at a secret location.
00:03:38They're each stuck in windowless rooms.
00:03:57Hello?
00:03:59With no idea of their whereabouts.
00:04:10You are being held at an undisclosed location.
00:04:13Your partner offers your only hope of escape.
00:04:16This is brutal.
00:04:19Oh, my God.
00:04:21Their teammates are starting out more than a thousand kilometers away in New Zealand's deep south.
00:04:36On an extreme mission to find and free their partner.
00:04:41The rescuers are being dropped into one of the wettest and most unforgiving places on earth.
00:04:49Fjordland.
00:04:54With little more than a GPS tracking device, sat phone and the clothes on their back.
00:05:00It's game on.
00:05:01It's time to start the mission.
00:05:03The scenery is amazing, but I'm absolutely petrified.
00:05:07I have no idea where I've got to go.
00:05:10Basically in the middle of nowhere.
00:05:17It looks treacherous, daunting, but with my survival experience, I think that we've got a good chance of winning.
00:05:25To reach their partner, they must make it through nine grueling and dangerous legs.
00:05:38Each leg, 24 hours long.
00:05:41You have 24 hours to navigate your partner to the first rendezvous point.
00:05:57Succeed and proceed to the next leg to be one step closer to freedom.
00:06:00Fail and you will be eliminated.
00:06:02If you complete each leg of the mission within 24 hours and are finally released by your rescuer.
00:06:07You will share in $100,000. Holy shit.
00:06:11The clock starts now.
00:06:12The clock starts now.
00:06:13All ten rescuers have landed on top of a cliff in Milford Sound, ready for a 24-hour dash to the first rendezvous point.
00:06:28I'm a bit worried about where we're going to go from here though.
00:06:35I can't see any way down.
00:06:39Track your rescuer via GPS and make a limited number of one minute calls to help them.
00:06:55They can't call you.
00:06:58Gearbox revealed contains a map and backpack with vital supplies.
00:07:05Guide your rescuer to the base of the cliff to find the gearbox below.
00:07:17Hello? Hello?
00:07:18Peter.
00:07:19You've got to get me out.
00:07:20I know what it is being stuck in a box with no way out.
00:07:24And I'm pretty confident that there aren't too many other people that understand it in the way that I do.
00:07:31Shocked and disgusted, that's how Peter Gresta's family and world leaders feel after the Australian journalist was jailed for seven years.
00:07:39I was a foreign correspondent and in 2013 I was arrested when I was in Egypt covering an unfolding political crisis.
00:07:50I had done nothing wrong.
00:07:52It was such a farce.
00:07:54I spent 400 days behind bars.
00:07:57Andrew saved me from my lowest point in my life.
00:08:02He got me out of jail.
00:08:05I can see where you are on the map and I can see where there's a map and a backpack with some gear in it.
00:08:11About 600 metres to the west.
00:08:13600 metres to the west.
00:08:15OK.
00:08:16Then along that creek or waterfall.
00:08:18OK.
00:08:19And the map's on the water's edge.
00:08:20600 metres to the north and down to a gully.
00:08:23No, no.
00:08:24600 metres west.
00:08:25OK.
00:08:26How are you feeling?
00:08:27You there?
00:08:30No.
00:08:31Line's dropped.
00:08:32Hello?
00:08:33I've got a debt of gratitude to pay Andrew.
00:08:36He sprung me out of a box and I'm hoping that I can do the same for him.
00:08:40Hang on there mate.
00:08:41I'll get you.
00:08:42There's only one way to reach the map and backpack.
00:08:47By dropping 180 metres down the sheer rock face.
00:08:52Then swimming across the icy waters of Milford Sound.
00:08:59That's got to be the gully down there.
00:09:05It is massively high.
00:09:09This is horrible.
00:09:14I can feel the adrenaline coursing through my body.
00:09:19Oh my God.
00:09:23Shit.
00:09:24Shit.
00:09:25Shit.
00:09:26I can feel my anxiety go.
00:09:28If I let that anxiety overtake me then I'm going to get into real trouble.
00:09:41Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:09:43I don't like this bit.
00:09:45Man, this just feels hairy.
00:09:48It's the knowledge that my brother's on the end of the line that really made me commit.
00:09:54Looks like he's moving.
00:09:55In a mission like this I wouldn't doubt his mental strength.
00:09:59It's probably more his physical.
00:10:01But he's toughed it out in an Egyptian prison and come out of it unbroken so.
00:10:11There were some absolutely horrendous days that we had in Cairo.
00:10:16Just thinking I just want to throw up.
00:10:19I never gave up on getting Peter out.
00:10:22Because I don't think I could have lived with myself if I'd quit.
00:10:28I owe everything to this bloke.
00:10:30Man, that's a drop and a half.
00:10:33You dear brother, it better be worth it.
00:10:37I'm not that scared of heights.
00:10:40Oh shit.
00:10:41Until I have a little peep down then it is a long way.
00:10:48He has moved on the map.
00:10:51I have the utmost faith.
00:10:52Geoff will get to me no matter what.
00:10:55That's a bloody long way.
00:10:57And the only way is bound.
00:10:59I'm a paramedic just as a detective.
00:11:02We deal with stressful situations very regularly.
00:11:06We have two little boys at home.
00:11:08And we obviously think they're the most wonderful things on the planet.
00:11:12They both had quite a lot of health issues when they were younger.
00:11:16Our first son was born premature at 31 weeks.
00:11:21Unfortunately he ended up with a collapsed lung at a few months old.
00:11:25Mentally I struggled.
00:11:27It was really hard.
00:11:29Geoff sacrificed his career as a detective.
00:11:32We made the decision to sell our house.
00:11:35We moved into a van because we didn't want financial stress on top of everything else.
00:11:39Winning this would give us financial freedom.
00:11:42It would help us spend more time with the kids.
00:11:45It would absolutely change our lives.
00:11:47As I'm going through this mission, if ever I think I'm doing it tough, my lungs are fully developed and going okay.
00:11:54So, you know, I've just got to remember that and just keep going and keep pushing.
00:11:58He's at the bottom.
00:12:00Well done, baby.
00:12:02Look at that.
00:12:03That's amazing.
00:12:05I'm hoping when he hits that water he can swim that distance.
00:12:13I have never experienced cold like this.
00:12:17To the point where I'm struggling to breathe.
00:12:20My limbs, my fingertips are all going very numb very quickly.
00:12:24It feels like a vice is squeezing my head.
00:12:29I'm not entirely sure if I can even make the distance.
00:12:38It was so cold, that water.
00:12:41I've never felt anything like it.
00:12:43Geoff hates the cold, so he'll be struggling.
00:12:47The body was saying, what are you doing?
00:12:49But I knew that I had to pursue and to get the supplies that I'd need to survive out here.
00:12:55There is some serious determination I can see in some of the other rescuers.
00:13:01They're going hard, but I'm not racing against other people.
00:13:05I'm racing against time.
00:13:09Kai is fearless.
00:13:11As a stuntwoman, I know she would have done loads of things just as challenging.
00:13:18So, Lou is married to my cousin, but Lou is like a sister.
00:13:25Kai and I first met on my husband's farm.
00:13:28Kai rocked up on a motorcycle, and my first impression was, what an amazingly tough woman.
00:13:36I was a stuntwoman in Hollywood for 16 years.
00:13:40I managed to work on some of the biggest action movies.
00:13:42The Avengers, Thor, Pirates of the Caribbean.
00:13:45I'm a survival expert.
00:13:47Surviving in the Amazon for 19 days, and traversed high-altitude mountain ranges in Tibet.
00:13:53It would be amazing to take home the prize money.
00:13:57Just knowing the difference that could make to Lou's farm keeps me motivated.
00:14:03The farm has been in my husband's family for five generations, but the farm is in drought.
00:14:10Winning's about being able to provide a future for our farm.
00:14:14She's heading in the right direction.
00:14:17Let's go, girl.
00:14:18You can do this.
00:14:22The water felt like there was actual ice bubbling around me.
00:14:26The dangers with water that cold is it can shock your heart into an irregular rhythm.
00:14:32And you can die in three hours from cold exposure.
00:14:36This is really fucking hard.
00:14:54Okay.
00:14:56We'll just go for a little spin.
00:14:58She's well over halfway.
00:15:00Quarter of the way to go.
00:15:01She's good.
00:15:03Slow and steady.
00:15:04I'm really concerned about the height of this cliff.
00:15:16Cassidy's not great with height, so if she has to abseil, I just hope she's going to be okay.
00:15:22I really don't want to do that.
00:15:24Any delay and rescuers could fail to reach the first rendezvous point within 24 hours.
00:15:31I feel like I'm going to cry.
00:15:34I'm just an extremely lucky person and things always seem to follow my way.
00:15:39It's a reflection to be married to such a beautiful woman at such a young age that I am extremely lucky.
00:15:45We are 23.
00:15:46We have been married for about six months now.
00:15:49When we got engaged, there were definitely people that were making it a negative experience for us, saying, you know, are you sure that that's what you want to do?
00:15:56You're so young and you've got so much ahead of you.
00:15:58You don't know who you are yet.
00:15:59But I knew and Regan knew.
00:16:02I have these wedding rings with me, so our engagement ring, our wedding band, and then this is the date that we were married on, 2022.
00:16:13So it's something really special I have.
00:16:15Winning a life-changing amount of money is going to do so much for us.
00:16:19We're going to get to make so many memories together and start up a really good life for ourselves while we're still young.
00:16:24We're going to win because Regan and I are so keen to show everyone that it doesn't matter how old you are or where you come from or what you do.
00:16:31If you love someone, you would do anything for them.
00:16:36Come on, Cass. What are you doing?
00:16:38It's taking me so long.
00:16:43I'm always worried about my kids. I'm always worried about Millie being out there by herself.
00:16:48Shit!
00:16:49But she's the most stubborn shithead I know.
00:16:51If she says, this is what I'm doing, she'll find a way to get it done.
00:16:55Shit, yeah.
00:17:01I'm shaking.
00:17:06Her location hasn't updated in the last probably 20-odd minutes.
00:17:10My greatest concern is that it is taking Cassidy a long time to only go a short distance.
00:17:17Okay, Cass, come on.
00:17:21I'm so terrified. My heart's pounding.
00:17:25Oh, no, no, don't turn the plane.
00:17:27I know that I need to be faster, but I can't move any quicker than I'm going.
00:17:34My hands are getting really sore.
00:17:36I honestly feel that I could die if I have a slip of a hand here.
00:17:41Come on, Cass, come on.
00:17:42Go, go, go, go.
00:17:43Go, go, go, go, go.
00:17:50First to the map and backpack is journalist Peter.
00:17:56Followed by Detective Jeff.
00:17:57All right.
00:17:58Let's go.
00:17:59All right.
00:18:00Let's go.
00:18:06First aid kit.
00:18:07Probably be handy.
00:18:08Oh, socks.
00:18:09Headlamp.
00:18:10Oh, yes.
00:18:11Thermals.
00:18:12Shocks.
00:18:13Needed.
00:18:14Water.
00:18:15Gearbox revealed.
00:18:16Contains camping gear.
00:18:18How you doing?
00:18:19How you going?
00:18:20I'm fine.
00:18:21You've done so well.
00:18:22Well done.
00:18:23I need to get warm.
00:18:24So where do I need to go?
00:18:25Where you need to get is the end of the fjord.
00:18:26The end of the fjord, yep.
00:18:27Right to the end.
00:18:28So if you had a kayak or something, it's a 10 kilometre paddle upstream.
00:18:30Oh, thanks, darling.
00:18:31I miss ya.
00:18:32I'm on my way.
00:18:33Love you, babe.
00:18:34I love ya.
00:18:35Bye.
00:18:36All right.
00:18:37Just got to keep heading west.
00:18:38Don't get my seat.
00:18:39Don't get my seat.
00:18:40I'll get my seat.
00:18:41All right.
00:18:42Just got to keep heading west.
00:18:43Don't get my seat.
00:18:44Don't get my seat.
00:18:45Don't get my seat.
00:18:46Don't get my seat.
00:18:47Don't get my seat.
00:18:48Don't get my seat.
00:18:49Don't get my seat.
00:18:50Don't get my seat.
00:18:51Don't get my seat.
00:18:52Don't get my seat.
00:18:53Don't get my seat.
00:18:54Don't get my seat.
00:18:55Don't get my seat.
00:18:56Don't get my seat.
00:19:01Rescuers must now conquer a 10 kilometre paddle.
00:19:04Then navigate through dense forest.
00:19:07And brave a freezing lake.
00:19:09To make it to the rendezvous point 53 kilometres away.
00:19:20Nick and I are tradies from Cronulla.
00:19:27Nick is everything to me because he's like the brother I've never had.
00:19:32He's someone to go to for, you know, the fun times, the bad times.
00:19:37Yeah, sometimes people do confuse as a couple.
00:19:40I think it's quite funny.
00:19:41I don't get offended by it at all.
00:19:43We're definitely not a couple, but yeah, no, I find it quite funny.
00:19:46That's the stigma attached to just being a tradie from the Shire, I guess,
00:19:50and acting a certain way, which I think we're not.
00:19:54Our friendship is different because we can be emotional together
00:19:58and we can be vulnerable.
00:19:59I don't think we'll fight dirty, but we will do whatever we can to get the win.
00:20:05What do you see around you?
00:20:07I can see some kayaks.
00:20:09You need to get yourself to the end of the fjord.
00:20:11End of the fjord?
00:20:12What's a fjord?
00:20:13Hello?
00:20:14Go on.
00:20:15Fuck.
00:20:16Well, there goes our minute of conversation.
00:20:17All right, so I'm going to have to figure this out.
00:20:18It's funny because I won national titles, been paddling, and I'm stuck in here.
00:20:36Um, hopefully he's going to be all right and get to the next gearbox.
00:20:43Cassidy is the final rescuer to claim her backpack.
00:20:49I've never felt this cold before.
00:20:52My body's not working, I'm not being able to breathe properly.
00:20:56What's in here?
00:20:57I'm shaking, I'm kind of slowing my words, I can't think straight.
00:21:01It's really, really scary.
00:21:03Hello?
00:21:04Cass?
00:21:05Um, are you okay?
00:21:06Yeah, what do I need to do now?
00:21:08I'm really cold.
00:21:10I could hear her voice trembling, so yeah, I was definitely worried.
00:21:15The next gearbox is at the end of the fjord, and it's got the camping equipment in it, okay?
00:21:21Okay.
00:21:22Hey, I'm so proud of you.
00:21:23Are you okay?
00:21:24I'm all good.
00:21:25It's really, really cold.
00:21:26I'm helpless here.
00:21:28I can only try and comfort her in the limited time I have.
00:21:32We have camping equipment soon.
00:21:35Love you.
00:21:36Love you.
00:21:40Regan?
00:21:41Regan?
00:21:45Come on, Cass.
00:21:46Get me out of here.
00:21:59Ten Australians are racing the clock to complete this first leg of their rescue mission.
00:22:03Boy, we got some waves.
00:22:07But they still have nearly 50 kilometers to go.
00:22:11It's tiring, but this wind is a bit of a killer.
00:22:16Come on, Pete.
00:22:19If they don't make it within 24 hours, they face elimination.
00:22:24Come on, you can do this.
00:22:28At the back of the pack is young newlywed Cassidy.
00:22:32A bit faster.
00:22:34The wind was so intense and my muscles were burning because I was paddling and paddling and paddling,
00:22:40but I just wasn't moving anywhere.
00:22:42And so it felt like I was paddling for hours.
00:22:44You can make up the time.
00:22:47Just keep going.
00:22:48Each rescuer is ultimately on a mission to find and free their partner, who's locked up at a secret location.
00:22:58Tracking their movement via GPS and helping them to navigate.
00:23:02I'm getting a little bit concerned now.
00:23:05I'm just hoping that the longer I stare at this, the more it's going to start moving.
00:23:10It's so hard just watching Cassidy via the GPS and all I can do is hope for the best.
00:23:16There's very, very little to do in here to keep your mind busy.
00:23:22It's a room with no window.
00:23:24I can't see outside.
00:23:26The lights are always on.
00:23:30Being locked in a room without sunlight is extremely hard for me.
00:23:35I'm trying to find any possible way to entertain myself.
00:23:40What do you want to be named?
00:23:42So, yeah, I've got a bucket buddy.
00:23:45Why don't I call you 9.3?
00:23:49I think that's fitting. Here's your hat.
00:24:00I thought I'd have a little mate, but he's not very talkative, that's for sure.
00:24:06Gearbox revealed.
00:24:12Alright.
00:24:17Journalist Peter is the first rescuer to reach the camping gear.
00:24:21I'm competitive, but what matters in this is beating the clock.
00:24:26That's a long battle.
00:24:28And so there's always a sense of pressure.
00:24:30Got to keep moving.
00:24:32Detective Jeff and stuntwoman Kai are close behind.
00:24:44More gear.
00:24:45Yes.
00:24:46The camping supplies made me feel at least a little bit relieved that we'd have some shelter.
00:24:52A tarp, ground sheet, a sleeping bag.
00:24:55This stuff is going to be helpful, but I'm not quite sure how I'm going to get to where I need to go.
00:25:03Hello.
00:25:08Hey, how are you going?
00:25:10A bit cold, a bit wet, but otherwise fine. How are you travelling?
00:25:14Ah, okay.
00:25:16That hasn't been the easiest.
00:25:17No, it hasn't.
00:25:18Anyway.
00:25:20If you go 2.2km directly south of your position, and then 4.8km west of that point, and that'll put you at the next gearbox.
00:25:31My advice is to go along the beach, 1.5km, and then head south west.
00:25:37That is where the gearbox is, and contains food.
00:25:41There's food in your gearbox that you're going to?
00:25:44Yeah.
00:25:46This is an endurance event.
00:25:48I need to remain competitive and in this game, and it's calories that are going to do that for me.
00:25:52I'm just focused on getting the food as fast as possible.
00:26:02The forest ahead is dense and hard to navigate.
00:26:06Rescuers have only a couple of hours of daylight left in order to find the food.
00:26:17Come on, baby. Come on, baby. We've got this.
00:26:20Stroke, stroke, stroke.
00:26:24Currently second last is mum of four, Ashley.
00:26:28Good job. You're doing so amazing!
00:26:34Just keep pushing, babe.
00:26:37Come on, keep going.
00:26:39I fell in love with Ashley after three days.
00:26:43We've always had a very strong bond, and we are both full-time plus-size models.
00:26:48And we are proud parents of our four beautiful children.
00:26:52I am fully capable as a mother, as a woman, as a wife.
00:26:56I may not have that athletic build, but I do train numerous times a week.
00:27:00I have a very strong and positive mindset.
00:27:03And my family is everything, so if I'm able to inspire my children, I know that I'm doing a good job.
00:27:10Ashley is definitely relying on me to get her from A to B, so I have to use the time wisely that I'm locked up in here to navigate her properly.
00:27:23So there's a big lake that looks like a jellybean.
00:27:27There you will find your next gearbox.
00:27:30No, I'm not sure if I'm in the same place.
00:27:32Can you see the jellybean-shaped lake?
00:27:35Yeah.
00:27:37You're not giving me confidence, yes.
00:27:39OK.
00:27:40On the west side of the map, so the left side.
00:27:43No, the right side.
00:27:45You said west.
00:27:47North is obviously at the top.
00:27:49West is on my left side.
00:27:52Oh, it's gone.
00:27:54Frick.
00:27:56Frick!
00:27:57I couldn't really understand, but he's telling me to look for the jellybean-shaped cove.
00:28:04We were not connecting.
00:28:07So my biggest worry is just getting lost.
00:28:11I need to keep moving, so I'm just going to get my stuff and start heading towards this direction because I'm thinking maybe like three, maybe four hours until it's going to be dark.
00:28:21Each rescuer is navigating a different path through the forest.
00:28:30Oh, it's awesome.
00:28:32I've been navigating the wilderness for 30 years.
00:28:37This is probably as extreme as it gets.
00:28:40When you're walking, you don't know if it's going to be a solid footstep.
00:28:44If I slip, I break something, I'm out of this competition.
00:28:47This is absolutely the type of bush that someone inexperienced in navigation could get lost in easily.
00:28:57Cassidy is last to start the hike.
00:29:00I really need to stop with some water.
00:29:02This bag weighs about as much as I do, so it's making it really difficult going uphill.
00:29:09I really need to have a drink and then zip up the pace.
00:29:13I really slowed myself down on the kayaks, so I need to make up some ground.
00:29:22I'm most worried part of Cassidy's slowing down is my fault.
00:29:26Night's coming.
00:29:28I'm definitely concerned that she won't get to the food.
00:29:31She'll have to do the last bit of the journey in the dark.
00:29:35Oh!
00:29:37That does not look like the right way.
00:29:41At all.
00:29:45That will just soak me and it's coming to night time.
00:29:48Um, so I'm going to have to try to go around it, but I hope I don't get lost going around it.
00:29:52But I guess, we'll see.
00:29:55There's only about an hour, hour and a half of light left.
00:29:57Which means I've got to get it to the gearbox really quickly.
00:30:03This is for Mark.
00:30:05The clock is ticking.
00:30:07I've only got 24 hours, so I can't muck around.
00:30:11Derek is a Terminator.
00:30:13He won't be the fastest, but Terminators don't stop.
00:30:18Derek and I met more than 35 years ago.
00:30:20And, um, we've been mates together.
00:30:22I've been mates together for a long time.
00:30:24And I've done this long time, but I've done this long time.
00:30:26I've done this long time, so I've done this long time.
00:30:28And I've done that long time.
00:30:30I've done it.
00:30:32And I've done it.
00:30:34I've done it.
00:30:35Derek and I met more than 35 years ago and we've been mates ever since we were
00:30:41in the special operations section of the South Australia Police the equivalent of
00:30:46a Navy SEAL we went to arrest a man at his house and I was shot 14 times in
00:30:52less than five seconds I was part of a rescue party that rescued Derek and when
00:31:01I first located him I didn't believe he was alive he lost almost all of his
00:31:06blood and had no signs of life I know that Derek will rescue me because he's
00:31:12as strong as an oxygen he's bulletproof
00:31:16shit it looks as if it's reasonably deep and I do not want to get water inside my
00:31:24boots water inside my boots stuffed me up for the rest of the day I'm going to
00:31:29trek around it I'm not going to go through it mark is the most important
00:31:34thing here and if I'm sore and I get slow I'm going to be stuffed I will track
00:31:39around this it may take me a lot longer I'm just going to have to make sure I
00:31:43know exactly where I'm going so when I trek out I can track back as well
00:31:50gets worse and worse it's probably the hardest tracking that I've ever done in
00:31:55my life it's dangerous because it's all wet slippery that witness is just going to
00:32:00lower the core body temperature and lead to hypothermia
00:32:03survivalist Kai is first to reach the food
00:32:24all right I've got a billy I've got something to some food whoops a daisy I've got some food in here
00:32:37how are you going I'm good I've got a bit of daylight left I'm getting worried about where to camp though I
00:32:47definitely think that you will need to camp around there for the night you won't be able to make it
00:32:52out too far from there before it gets dark so I would definitely suggest finding a spot there to
00:32:59be able to set up camp my survival out here depends on my mental clarity and a good night's sleep being
00:33:08warm and having some food in my belly will help with that mental clarity navigating in the dark will
00:33:20be nearly impossible and Ashley has lost her way I think I've taken a wrong turn somewhere my husband
00:33:39didn't give me a bearing so there's no point in using my compass at the moment
00:33:44it looks like she's only halfway I believe in Ashley but Ashley has a long way to go yet
00:33:55so this is where I was and he said to move along toward the jelly bean in the west direction when I realized how lost I had become I became very depleted
00:34:18she'll have to get to the next gearbox before dark and that's not looking too good my focus is
00:34:28just getting to the next gearbox because if I don't I can't even have food tonight
00:34:33without the berry and I have no idea where I am
00:34:3810 Australians are locked up and unaware of their location
00:34:51each is helping to navigate a partner through tough terrain in a 24-hour race against the clock
00:35:01to reach the end of this first leg of their mission
00:35:04yeah I think I'm lost
00:35:06without the berry and I have no idea where I am
00:35:09it gets worse and worse
00:35:11rescuers are trying to beat the fading sun
00:35:15to find the only food for this leg
00:35:17I do not want to get water inside my boots
00:35:21I hurt my hip
00:35:28it's almost an instant panic
00:35:33because it doesn't matter how wet I get now
00:35:35I was completely wringing wet it was getting dark
00:35:38hypothermia was a real concern
00:35:41if I didn't get out of that forest
00:35:43death is a possibility
00:35:47journalist Peter is second to the food
00:35:54the food is a critical issue like this is not something to mess about with we cannot afford to keep going without food
00:36:08already feeling weak
00:36:11and so the food is absolutely essential
00:36:15awesome
00:36:16they've been trapped for just six hours
00:36:23and already some captives are starting to unravel
00:36:27I don't know how he did it
00:36:30I just don't know how Pete did that
00:36:32400 days in Egypt
00:36:35he didn't even know when he was going to get out
00:36:41because I'm a fairly active kind of a person
00:36:48it's just hard
00:36:50I think I'd probably use Peter as an inspiration really
00:36:55hello
00:36:59hello
00:36:59how are you
00:37:00I'm cold
00:37:01I've got wet feet up to my knees
00:37:04have you got something to keep you dry tonight
00:37:09yeah
00:37:10yeah
00:37:10I've got a sleeping mat
00:37:11and a ground sheet and stuff
00:37:12so I've got
00:37:13I've got enough to rig something
00:37:14listen
00:37:16how are you doing
00:37:16yeah it's bloody
00:37:18it's a
00:37:20it's a mental bloody
00:37:22head fuck
00:37:23that's what it is
00:37:24and
00:37:25yeah
00:37:26you just got to be careful
00:37:27not to go down a bloody
00:37:29rabbit war
00:37:30mate
00:37:31that is always the place
00:37:32that'll get you
00:37:33okay
00:37:33I'll be alright
00:37:36I know what you're dealing with
00:37:39hello
00:37:42hello
00:37:44oh fuck
00:37:45it didn't sound too good
00:37:48being detained is always a mental problem
00:37:51it's gone
00:37:52it's a bloody tough thing to handle
00:37:55the mental game that you always go through
00:38:01when you're stuck in that kind of situation
00:38:03is not an easy thing to deal with
00:38:05that's the place when all of your demons come up
00:38:10that's the place when you start doubting yourself
00:38:16you start questioning things
00:38:17and so
00:38:20it takes a lot of strength
00:38:22to let it go
00:38:23that's the trick
00:38:26the night hits really quickly here
00:38:39if I make a great shelter
00:38:41I'm gonna get a great sleep
00:38:44and I'm gonna be able to perform my best to get to Lou as fast as I can
00:38:48if I was to trust anyone to come and rescue me out of this place
00:38:54it would 100% be Kai
00:38:56she is strong
00:38:58she's faithful
00:38:59and I know she won't stop until she finds me
00:39:03the next priority is gonna be fire
00:39:08fire can provide warmth, security
00:39:11and it also enables you to get some food in your belly
00:39:14if you can't make a solid enough shelter
00:39:17and have fire in these conditions
00:39:19nature can strike you down at any time
00:39:22you definitely don't want to be caught out here in the dark
00:39:25you're gonna get lost
00:39:26and once the sun sets
00:39:28it's gonna get freezing really quickly
00:39:30Cassidy has been trekking off course
00:39:38for nearly four hours
00:39:40as she attempts to find the food
00:39:42it's instantly terrifying
00:39:44as soon as the light goes down
00:39:46you don't know if you're gonna be stuck out there for the night
00:39:49each step I take is getting heavier
00:39:52my shoes are getting more and more filled with water
00:39:54I'm dehydrated
00:39:55I'm hungry
00:39:56I'm tired
00:39:57I'm freezing
00:39:58so far this has been the most difficult day of my life
00:40:02without question
00:40:02come on, almost there
00:40:07come on, come on, come on
00:40:08she can just get to that gearbox
00:40:10I know that it will draw so much confidence
00:40:13sourcing all this worrying
00:40:17you know
00:40:20as soon as I find the gearbox
00:40:21I just feel relief instantly
00:40:24I haven't eaten all day
00:40:26and my muscles are just screaming out for some fuel
00:40:29let me do some food
00:40:30hot chips would be nice
00:40:32anything food created
00:40:36what is this?
00:40:38that does not look like a hot chip
00:40:41it smells like beans
00:40:44and rice or something
00:40:47are you serious?
00:40:48and it's a little hot
00:40:51so I've actually got to try and make it
00:40:52I have little to no experience in camping
00:40:55especially rough camping
00:40:57I'm a glamper
00:40:58but then I started thinking
00:41:01alright now I've got to get my camp set up
00:41:03and I've got to organise a fire
00:41:04and I've got to get everything ready
00:41:05to kind of have as calm of a night as I can
00:41:08you there Derek?
00:41:21I am mate
00:41:21first of all
00:41:22how are you feeling emotionally and mentally?
00:41:24no mate strong
00:41:25strong as
00:41:26how's your body holding up?
00:41:28I did have a dip in the water today
00:41:30I slipped off a log
00:41:31and I hurt my hip
00:41:32this is going to be a long
00:41:35long slog for us
00:41:36but especially for you
00:41:37you need to keep your body intact
00:41:39absolutely
00:41:40not a problem
00:41:40by the same token
00:41:42you sound like you're in good spirits
00:41:44well you know why I'm in good spirits?
00:41:46because I'm talking to you
00:41:47that helps me a lot
00:41:48and I hope it helps you as well
00:41:50the first nine rescuers are making camp
00:42:00we're going to get pretty comfy here
00:42:07but Ashley is still deep in the forest
00:42:11and no closer to the food
00:42:13oh frick
00:42:15she needs to get a rig along
00:42:18it's pretty close to my worst nightmare
00:42:24the terrain is so thick
00:42:27and it's just so unpredictable
00:42:29I don't know where to go
00:42:31one wrong move
00:42:34could cost you
00:42:35the game
00:42:36my biggest worry
00:42:39it was
00:42:39trying to make it to a safe place
00:42:41to build my shelter for the night
00:42:43okay
00:42:45look I feel like this
00:42:48is just going to have to do
00:42:50much better
00:42:54already
00:42:55it's actually already way warmer
00:42:57I've been waiting to have dinner
00:43:05so I've just got it ready
00:43:07so I thought we could have dinner together

00:43:32I'm happy to hear
00:43:33it would be more fun if you were here
00:43:36I'm not even sure if I'm in a very good spot
00:43:49I'm disappointed that I got lost
00:43:51I really just want to rest
00:43:53so it was important that we figure out
00:43:56how we're going to give each other more clear directions
00:43:59hello my lover
00:44:04how are you?
00:44:06I'm really tired
00:44:07I got really lost
00:44:09it was hot
00:44:12I know
00:44:14this is totally out of our comfort zone
00:44:17oh and I've called you twice
00:44:19and I haven't told you how much I love you
00:44:22thank you
00:44:23I've been waiting for that
00:44:24I'm here for you
00:44:26whatever you need
00:44:28I need to use the compass
00:44:30well you're not using it
00:44:34no because you didn't give me a degrees
00:44:36I don't know how to do that
00:44:38I don't even know what the hell that is
00:44:40can you give me a grid bearing
00:44:42I've got a grid on my screen
00:44:44but what do I say
00:44:45it's like
00:44:45if you can see where I am
00:44:47then you figure out the grid bearing
00:44:49and then that will send me in the right direction
00:44:51I don't understand jelly bean shape pulls
00:44:55okay
00:44:56could you see the jelly bean?
00:44:58no baby it's pitch black
00:44:59I can't see a thing
00:45:00I cannot see a thing
00:45:02anyway
00:45:05I love you
00:45:07remember stronger together

00:45:14I don't know if he understands
00:45:19what it is like for me to be a
00:45:21see here
00:45:22oh
00:45:23Roland and I have plenty of experience
00:45:27troubleshooting as a team
00:45:29we have four kids
00:45:31we are constantly navigating
00:45:33and negotiating in our own home
00:45:35but this is definitely the toughest thing
00:45:39we have been through
00:45:40oh okay
00:45:51in the New Zealand wilderness
00:45:54rescuers have just spent their first night out
00:45:57in two degree temperatures
00:45:58God I'm cold
00:46:01they have a little over five hours left
00:46:03to complete the first leg of their mission
00:46:06and avoid elimination
00:46:08about two hours sleep I think
00:46:09I've had a hip injury
00:46:12and last night I just couldn't get comfortable on this hard ground
00:46:15get all that air out
00:46:17so the night was cold
00:46:19it would have been nice to have another body in there with me
00:46:22Sue's obviously
00:46:24we've sacrificed a fair bit for our children
00:46:26and that's basically why we're here
00:46:28winning this mission
00:46:29would assist us with a bit of financial freedom
00:46:32and also give us the time to hang out with our boys
00:46:34rescuers are not the only ones
00:46:45being put to the test
00:46:46a puzzle stands between teams
00:46:51and the next set of directions
00:46:53what is this?
00:46:58there's some sort of puzzle here
00:47:00looks like a word puzzle
00:47:02okay
00:47:03running out
00:47:06okay I think I've got it
00:47:08time is running out
00:47:14that's right
00:47:16view box revealed
00:47:18dropped in the middle of the forest
00:47:22is the final map
00:47:24that will lead rescuers to the rendezvous point
00:47:26at the end of this leg
00:47:28basically due north
00:47:30we've got to work out
00:47:31how to get across these
00:47:33okay
00:47:34I've got to call Jeff
00:47:35Nico
00:47:39hi
00:47:41our next box
00:47:43contains a map
00:47:44to the rendezvous point tower
00:47:45so that's our last stop
00:47:47for this leg
00:47:48okay
00:47:48where you are now
00:47:49it's northeast
00:47:50between 15 and 20 degrees
00:47:53okay
00:47:53okay
00:47:54I'm gonna get going
00:47:55and you've got
00:47:57a bit over five hours
00:47:58and it looks like
00:48:00it's in the bush
00:48:01like it's in the forest
00:48:02so you reckon 800 metres north
00:48:04hello
00:48:05you there
00:48:07all right
00:48:10let's go
00:48:12setting off closest to the map
00:48:15is Peter
00:48:16then Kai
00:48:18towards the back of the pack
00:48:20is Cassidy
00:48:21and Ashley
00:48:22still lost
00:48:23is yet to find the food
00:48:25we've got to get going
00:48:28we've got one last little hurdle
00:48:31and that's to find the map
00:48:32and then for Cass to get to the rendezvous point
00:48:34but it looks like she has to cross
00:48:36a fair bit of water though
00:48:37again
00:48:38which is an ideal
00:48:39being early in the morning
00:48:40it's gonna be freezing
00:48:41the one thing
00:48:44I didn't want this morning
00:48:45was water
00:48:46and the first thing
00:48:47I got this morning
00:48:48is water
00:48:48stuntwoman Kai
00:48:52has already entered the forest
00:48:54but reaching the final gearbox
00:48:56will not be easy
00:48:57it's hard work
00:48:59this is an endurance event
00:49:01any step
00:49:03I could break a leg
00:49:04get a serious injury
00:49:05and then every time
00:49:07I get a bit tired
00:49:08I just think
00:49:09getting to Lou
00:49:10and winning this
00:49:13will help the family
00:49:15and the farm
00:49:16I'm super aware
00:49:19of the clock ticking
00:49:20all the time
00:49:21it's got to be somewhere
00:49:24I looked around
00:49:25and I couldn't see
00:49:26the gearbox
00:49:27how the fuck
00:49:33can I get up there
00:49:34the only solid branch
00:49:36there is up there
00:49:37is that fork
00:49:38so I was gonna have to
00:49:40get up to the gearbox
00:49:41the gearbox wasn't
00:49:42coming down to me
00:49:42I've got to try
00:49:44and get this weight
00:49:46over that
00:49:47but that's a
00:49:47massive throw
00:49:49so close
00:49:57word puzzle
00:50:06word
00:50:07okay
00:50:07so five letter word
00:50:09it's three different colours
00:50:10water chase boats
00:50:12I'm guessing it has
00:50:13something to do
00:50:13with the sea
00:50:14or water
00:50:15it's a lot of pressure
00:50:16knowing that Kai really
00:50:18is relying on me
00:50:19and time was going
00:50:20really fast
00:50:21I'm not usually
00:50:22too bad with word puzzles
00:50:23it has been really
00:50:25challenging
00:50:25to keep my brain
00:50:27switched on at all times
00:50:28when I'm locked
00:50:29in a room
00:50:29the lights never go out
00:50:31and being surrounded
00:50:32by only my own thoughts
00:50:34there's got to be
00:50:35a trick to it
00:50:36there always is
00:50:37I'm really struggling here
00:50:40after getting lost
00:50:45last night
00:50:46Ashley's finally
00:50:47made it to the food
00:50:48okay
00:50:50so
00:50:51quickly gonna have
00:50:52something to eat
00:50:53get it in there
00:50:55like that
00:50:56this is brekkie
00:50:58hey
00:51:02hello
00:51:03hi good morning
00:51:04morning
00:51:05how was your sleep
00:51:06how are you
00:51:06it was rough
00:51:07it was rough
00:51:08I don't know if I slept
00:51:09I was kind of in and out
00:51:10but I stayed warm
00:51:12and I'm alive
00:51:14that's good
00:51:14alright
00:51:15in front of you
00:51:17when facing north position
00:51:19do you see the mountain
00:51:20I see a couple of mountains
00:51:22it's in a 10 to 15 degree radius
00:51:26of your north position
00:51:28yep
00:51:29and then
00:51:30at the foot of the mountain
00:51:31you should find
00:51:32the next gearbox
00:51:33which contains
00:51:34the map
00:51:35to your rendezvous point
00:51:37okay so
00:51:3810 to 15 degrees
00:51:40north
00:51:41is that grid bearing
00:51:42or magnetic
00:51:43I don't know
00:51:45um
00:51:47why did he do that
00:51:52oh I didn't even tell her
00:51:54how much time he had left
00:51:55oh shoot
00:51:57I feel like
00:51:58his communication
00:51:59has gotten better
00:52:00so I just hope
00:52:02that he's heading
00:52:03me in the right place
00:52:04let's go
00:52:05but at the same time
00:52:07the terrain out there
00:52:08is so unpredictable
00:52:09any wrong move
00:52:11could cost you
00:52:12getting to your partner
00:52:13survivalist Kai
00:52:24is near the map
00:52:25gearbox
00:52:26but can't reach it
00:52:27it was
00:52:29definitely taking me
00:52:30some time
00:52:31so
00:52:32I was quite relieved
00:52:34some of the other
00:52:34rescuers
00:52:35came along
00:52:36oh god
00:52:37hi
00:52:38I'm Kai by the way
00:52:39Nick
00:52:40hi Peter
00:52:41you're up
00:52:42let's see how close
00:52:44I can get it anyway
00:52:45ready
00:52:46yep
00:52:47wow
00:52:51nailed it
00:52:53nice work
00:52:55teamwork
00:52:58so what's the plan
00:52:59of getting this ladder up
00:53:00I reckon if we do
00:53:01an 8 on a bite
00:53:02that will be perfect
00:53:03what's an 8 on a bite
00:53:05so it's a knot
00:53:06that
00:53:06when you tie it
00:53:08it's most easily
00:53:09undone
00:53:10once it's been
00:53:11put under pressure
00:53:12and it's also
00:53:13super super safe
00:53:14okay
00:53:15figure 8
00:53:16yep
00:53:16how do you know
00:53:17all this stuff Kai
00:53:18I taught climbing
00:53:19for about 10 years
00:53:20this is right up your alley
00:53:21at this point
00:53:22we're all working together
00:53:23it's looking good Kai
00:53:23I'm happy enough
00:53:25to work with them
00:53:25we've all got to
00:53:26get our loved ones back
00:53:27there's a map
00:53:28good work
00:53:29those two rescuers
00:53:31have definitely
00:53:32switched on
00:53:32and they know
00:53:33what they're doing
00:53:33they're definitely
00:53:35going to be
00:53:35a tough competition
00:53:36well done Kai
00:53:37but I'm running
00:53:38my own race
00:53:39purely based on time
00:53:40I wonder if green
00:53:42means yes
00:53:43so it would be
00:53:44B
00:53:45something
00:53:46A
00:53:46I'm pretty sure
00:53:48I'm at the
00:53:49gearbox here
00:53:50but until Lou calls me
00:53:52I can't make
00:53:53the rendezvous point
00:53:54it's an H
00:53:55B
00:53:57E
00:53:57A
00:53:58come on Lou
00:53:59where are you

00:54:03or B
00:54:03E
00:54:03A
00:54:04H
00:54:05H
00:54:09finally
00:54:12oh yep
00:54:16there it is
00:54:17oh there's the
00:54:17rendezvous point
00:54:18yes
00:54:19direct your rescuer
00:54:21to the rendezvous
00:54:21point using a
00:54:22hydrofoil to get
00:54:23there
00:54:24here you go
00:54:27Alex
00:54:28you need to get
00:54:29to a hydrofoil
00:54:30which is just
00:54:31north of you
00:54:32about one
00:54:33kilometre
00:54:33and then you've
00:54:34got one and a
00:54:35half to two
00:54:35k's in the
00:54:36water
00:54:36and into that

00:54:51waiting for a
00:54:52call
00:54:52oh
00:54:52yep
00:54:53sorry
00:54:54there's going
00:54:55to be a
00:54:55hydrofoil
00:54:56okay
00:54:57use it to
00:54:58get to the
00:54:58RV
00:54:58which is
00:55:002.2
00:55:01kilometres
00:55:01north of
00:55:02where you
00:55:02are right

00:55:12listen mate
00:55:12rescuers must
00:55:15now trek over
00:55:16steep terrain
00:55:17to find an
00:55:18electric hydrofoil
00:55:19board that they
00:55:20can ride around
00:55:21the bay
00:55:21to the end
00:55:22of this leg
00:55:23fail to find
00:55:24the rendezvous
00:55:25point in time
00:55:26and they
00:55:27will be
00:55:27eliminated
00:55:28this ladder
00:55:31is
00:55:33very
00:55:34very
00:55:35wobbly
00:55:36and I
00:55:37am
00:55:37very wet
00:55:38climbing the
00:55:40ladder
00:55:40I've got a
00:55:43pair of size
00:55:4315 boots
00:55:44and they
00:55:44are big

00:55:46fly up this
00:55:47thing
00:55:47and my
00:55:48stupid
00:55:48flippers

00:55:50and slowing
00:55:50me down
00:55:51my ropes
00:55:52are getting
00:55:53caught a bit
00:55:53and if my
00:55:55feet
00:55:56didn't keep
00:55:57getting stuck
00:55:57I know I'd
00:55:58be able to
00:55:58move a little
00:55:59bit quicker
00:55:59that's
00:56:00been worth
00:56:02it
00:56:02Jeff is
00:56:04my hero

00:56:15to that
00:56:16hydrofoil
00:56:16head out
00:56:17into the
00:56:18next bay
00:56:18it's 2.4

00:56:22yep
00:56:23I'm hanging
00:56:26in there

00:56:41you
00:56:42ok
00:56:43oh he's
00:56:44gone
00:56:44so hard
00:56:48when you're
00:56:48racing against
00:56:49the clock
00:56:49because there's
00:56:50so many dangers
00:56:51out there
00:56:52and I just
00:56:52want to tell
00:56:53them to go
00:56:53fast
00:56:53but I want
00:56:54to tell
00:56:54them to go
00:56:54really slow
00:56:55and really
00:56:55safe
00:56:56I've got to
00:56:57move it
00:56:57and get
00:56:58around this
00:56:58fountain
00:56:59let's go
00:57:00I would be
00:57:01devastated if we
00:57:02got eliminated
00:57:03this round
00:57:03and I mean
00:57:04if we
00:57:05don't get there
00:57:05in time
00:57:06that's it
00:57:06and it will
00:57:07be
00:57:07heartbreaking
00:57:09it just gets
00:57:13harder
00:57:14the last five
00:57:25teams are in
00:57:26a race
00:57:26against time
00:57:27to retrieve
00:57:28the map
00:57:28to the end
00:57:29of the leg
00:57:30the rendezvous
00:57:31point
00:57:31those rescuers
00:57:33who don't
00:57:34make it there
00:57:34within the
00:57:35two hours
00:57:35remaining
00:57:36will be
00:57:39eliminated
00:57:39that hydrofoil
00:57:41is going to
00:57:41take you

01:02:47pretty sure
01:02:48that's like
01:02:48a surfboard
