00:00San Diego Zoo is home to many species of gecko we actually have 10 here at the zoo and you can see
00:09several of them on display in our exhibits on reptile mesa there are several others though
00:13we have on reserve in behind the scenes at the main reptile house and some other holding areas
00:18and we work with them to breed them in captivity one of the species we're working with here at
00:23the San Diego Zoo is the leaf-tailed geckos they're really unique they're very specialized
00:28animal and the males and females are a little bit different they have sexual dimorphism where the
00:33males are a little bit smaller and thinner they have a dark stripe running down their back the
00:38females are a little bit plumper the females lay two eggs and we've had a number of them in fact
00:43with one species we've had nine offspring just recently hatched here at the zoo so we're very
00:48proud of that the satanic leaf-tailed geckos are one other species that we're breeding here at the San
00:53Diego Zoo and with these animals the females again lay two eggs they're a little bit plumper and one
01:00of the individuals we have now you can actually see the eggs through her belly and you can tell
01:04they become very plump so we're excited to see and watch her lay those eggs and we'll take care of
01:09those and hopefully they'll hatch soon one thing we were excited about with the satanic leaf-tailed
01:14gecko is that it was our 2011 New Year's baby this year so we're very excited it's a very cute animal we
01:20have a few species of rachidactylist gecko they're a very large-bodied New Caldonian gecko they're very
01:26unique we have one the rough snouted giant gecko is unique in that it gives live birth it doesn't lay
01:33eggs and we have those and we've been breeding those as well another rachidactylist species we have that
01:38we're working with is the leeches giant gecko knob-tailed geckos are different than the geckos we've
01:46already seen those are tropical rainforest animals the knob-tailed geckos are from the deserts of
01:51Australia they're a little bit different their toes are shaped differently and they actually have
01:55eyelids where the other geckos we've seen do not these adaptations help them live in the desert
02:01environment that they're found there's so many great things about geckos it's hard for me to pick
02:05one reason why I like working with them they really are fabulous animals
