00:00Elon Musk on Monday night unveiled Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia built entirely using
00:06AI-generated articles designed to take on Wikipedia, which Musk and his allies have
00:11claimed is biased and woke.
00:14Last month, Musk announced plans to build Grokipedia, claiming that it would be an improvement
00:19over Wikipedia and a quote, necessary step towards the XAI goal of understanding the
00:25universe.
00:26Musk's announcement was in response to a post from White House AI Czar, Silicon Valley
00:31investor David Sachs, who has been a prominent critic of Wikipedia.
00:35In his post, Sachs claimed, quote, Wikipedia is hopelessly biased, an army of left-wing
00:41activists maintain the bios and fight reasonable corrections.
00:46The X-owner then boosted posts from Wikipedia's critics, accusing it of having a left-wing
00:51bias and labeled the crowdsourced platform, quote, Wikipedia.
00:57At launch, Grokipedia has over 885,000 articles compared to Wikipedia's 7 million.
01:04But while the crowdsourced online encyclopedia uses human authors and editors, Musk's alternative
01:10is entirely composed of articles generated and supposedly fact-checked by XAI's Grok.
01:16Grokipedia also does not allow its users to make any edits.
01:20But Musk said users will be, quote, able to ask Grok to add, modify, or delete articles,
01:26and it will either take the action, or tell you it won't, and why.
01:30In a separate X post, Musk added that the goal of Grok in Grokipedia is, quote, the truth,
01:35the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
01:38We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal.
01:43For articles on Grokipedia include a disclaimer at the bottom, which reads, quote, the content
01:48is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution Sharealike 4.0 license.
01:56Wikipedia's website already has an entry on Grokipedia, which notes that, quote, many articles
02:01are derived from Wikipedia articles, with some articles observed to be copied nearly verbatim,
02:07end quote.
02:08Musk said he is aware of Grokipedia using Wikipedia articles, and added, quote, we should have this
02:14fixed by end of year.
02:16In a statement shared with multiple outlets, the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit which
02:22runs Wikipedia, said, quote, Wikipedia's knowledge is, and always will be, human.
02:28This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content.
02:33Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.
02:37The statement added, quote, many experiments to create alternative versions of Wikipedia have
02:42happened before.
02:43It doesn't interfere with our work or mission.
