00:00Wir sehen uns beim nächsten Mal.
00:29The New Superduke, or the Beast, as it's commonly known,
00:33was to make our research and development team
00:36the actual hero of the story, because they are.
00:40Okay.
00:43My name is Christopher Hertz.
00:45Georg Schamberger.
00:46Janina Müller.
00:47My name is Robert Wörer.
00:48I work as a chief engineer power pack at KTM.
00:51I'm the system engineer.
00:52I've been project manager for the LC8 suspension.
00:55And I'm the interdisciplinary chief engineer for the 1390 Superduke R.
01:01We started with the new engine.
01:03It was four years ago.
01:05And we were thinking about what we could bring to a new level
01:08or what's the new parts.
01:10And we think, yeah, we should bring a complete new engine
01:14to give the customer a new feeling of riding.
01:17And for us, it was that we really want to increase the torque and the power.
01:21And we were at the beginning thinking about how we can bring it to a new level.
01:25And for us, it was clear that we have to make a bigger bore,
01:30to make a bigger replacement of the whole engine,
01:33to increase from 1290 to 1350.
01:36And also to bring a completely new system, the camshaft system.
01:39In 2021, when we first tested the bike in direct comparison to the 1290 Superduke R,
01:48at first you wouldn't expect that much of a difference, actually.
01:52But the power that the engine delivers was really impressive,
01:56even though the 1290 Superduke R already has impressive power output.
02:01But then again, within the two years of development up until now,
02:05we managed to still refine all these factors.
02:08And it's not only a small update,
02:11but really it feels like a completely different bike.
02:16Some colleagues say the bike will not be the limiting factor.
02:21The proudest moment for me was when we're going on the test bench
02:24with the first prototype and see,
02:26okay, it's now running really on the test bench.
02:29It's like, yeah, it's a baby is born.
02:31It's, this feeling is so amazing.
02:33And when I'm thinking back about this moment,
02:36I'm, I only get the goosebumps on my arms.
02:40This was, for me, it's, it's, it's more the feeling you can really,
02:48when I, let me say in this way,
02:50when I go out the first time with the new engine,
02:53with the new bike,
02:54I have such a big smiling in my face
02:56because you can really feel that the new generation of the beast
03:00has so much more torque in the lower rpms
03:03and you can feel that.
03:04And that is, for me, what's,
03:06yeah,
03:07it's a new benefit for the customers.
03:17Starting from our very test in like 2021,
03:21we were already better than the current 1290 SuperDuke R-Evo.
03:26That was already quite a successful start back then.
03:29And during that time,
03:31the 1290 SuperDuke R-Evo wasn't even in the market.
03:34So we were basically at the end of the development
03:36of that vehicle project
03:38and then just starting with the new vehicle project.
03:41So yeah, we knew we already were on the right track.
03:43The difference from this new model to the old model
03:48is actually a lot.
03:51It's already starting by the engine,
03:53which is really,
03:54most of it is new with the bigger bore.
03:57Then I go up actually,
03:58there is then the new throttle body,
03:59there is the new airbox,
04:01which is a little lower,
04:02where we could gain actually more gasoline volume.
04:06We have new electronics,
04:07we have the completely new suspension,
04:09which is really a step forward.
04:11We aimed actually to a lighter headlight.
04:15We saved here half a kilo.
04:17We gained some benefit also for the rider.
04:21When you're actually riding in corners in the night,
04:23there was always the hard line,
04:25where it was completely bright
04:26and next to it,
04:27it was completely dark.
04:29And with the new headlamps in the front,
04:32with the high and low beam,
04:33there's also some stray light.
04:35And so you do see now also in the corners.
04:41Actually preparing a test
04:43means always we have to look for,
04:46for sure for a track where we can test.
04:48We choose our tracks by the weather,
04:50by the layout,
04:51by the turn-by conditions.
04:55In the beginning actually,
04:57we had a little concerns about this track,
04:59that it's too fast.
05:00But riding around this track showed us
05:05that this track has actually everything.
05:07It has fast corners,
05:08slow corners,
05:09some really technical corners,
05:12but also straight with a break point
05:14with 260 kilometers power and more.
05:17So it got everything.
05:20Almaria is one of the most technically challenging circuits
05:23in Europe.
05:24So we're testing cornering ABS,
05:28we're testing traction control settings,
05:31as I said,
05:31with street tires,
05:32with slick tires,
05:34both.
05:35And Almaria really lends itself well
05:37as a test track.
05:38A test rider for us is so important
05:41because you get values from the test bench,
05:43but you never get from the test bench
05:44what a rider is feeling.
05:46So Jeremy is one of the best motorcycle riders
05:49in the world
05:50and you get so much input from him
05:52that nobody can say to you
05:55or a test bench can say to you
05:56about that feeling,
05:58what the engine is doing.
06:00I'm Jeremy McWilliams.
06:01I've been a test rider for 12 years now with KTM.
06:05First project was back in 2011
06:08when we started with the 1290 SuperJUK
06:10and I've been involved with the evolution
06:12of the SuperJUK
06:13all the way from then
06:14until the present day,
06:16now when we're launching the 1390.
06:19When they told us
06:20that we're getting 1390,
06:22we couldn't quite believe it.
06:24We got a call,
06:26hey, we're moving up to 1390 on the SuperJUK.
06:29Wow, okay.
06:30That's going to be fun.
06:31How are we going to do that?
06:32Then we heard about the step cam motor
06:33and that was even more exciting again.
06:35And then getting to ride it
06:36the first time was like,
06:38wow, okay,
06:39this is obviously a big step up
06:41from where we already were.
06:46We're here in Almaria,
06:47final testing with KTM 1390 SuperJUK R
06:51and 1390 SuperJUK R Evo.
06:55Kind of difficult to imagine
06:56what goes into a test team,
06:57but we have a lot of small teams
06:59within the big team,
07:01starting with our chief engineer,
07:02Jörg,
07:03and then right down
07:03to our trusted mechanics
07:04that we work with day in, day out.
07:06Also, some of those small teams
07:07within the test team,
07:09you know,
07:10ranging from our Bosch
07:11electronic engineers
07:13all the way to
07:13our wheels and brakes guys,
07:15our Ergo guys,
07:17our aftermarket power parts guys.
07:19So there's lots of small teams
07:21that make up this test team.
07:24We are testing
07:25semi-active suspension,
07:28putting the final tweaks
07:29on circuit here
07:31for track settings.
07:32We're doing the same
07:33with Apex WP standard suspension
07:36and also
07:37WP Apex power parts.
07:39On the R,
07:40we have done
07:41a lot of investigations
07:42in the beginning
07:44to see if we could
07:45actually improve
07:46this technology
07:47even further.
07:48We are still very sporty
07:50and we have increased
07:51the comfort.
07:52We have more hold up,
07:53especially during load changes
07:54and this gives it
07:56much more precision.
07:58It is much smoother
07:59to handle.
08:00It is overall
08:01a great,
08:02great step forward.
08:04At the Almeria
08:05racetrack test,
08:06we exchanged also
08:07the suspension
08:08the forks
08:09and the shocks
08:10to do back checks
08:12with previous versions
08:13also to check
08:15with the TA versions.
08:16To a certain point,
08:17we are trying to
08:18use functions
08:20that the Motorsport
08:21uses successfully
08:22also in his vehicle.
08:23So there's
08:24a certain DNA
08:26that is transported
08:27from the MotoGP bike
08:29to the street bike.
08:30As you can see,
08:31Hannes is out this morning
08:32testing some of those features.
08:38one of the features
08:39that we are working on today
08:40is our throttle maps
08:42in conjunction with the Akrobović
08:44full system.
08:45Because it's a little bit more horsepower,
08:46it takes a little bit more time
08:47to get that just right.
08:48for testing the new features,
08:49we have to collect a lot of data
08:51from sensors which amount of
08:52the power to get
08:52to get a little bit more horsepower.
08:53It takes a little bit more time
08:54to get that just right.
08:55with the collected data
08:56saved in the box
08:57with the collected data
08:58saved in the box
08:59and then the box
09:00One other feature
09:01that we are working on today
09:02is our throttle maps
09:03in conjunction with the
09:05Akrobović full system
09:06because it's a little bit more horsepower
09:08it takes a little bit more time
09:09to get that just right.
09:10I changed on the third gear
09:12the throttle is part
09:13For testing the new features
09:14we have to collect a lot of data
09:16from sensors which are mounted on the bikes.
09:18The wires then get collected
09:20in a small box
09:21in the tail of the bike
09:22with the collected data
09:23saved in the box
09:24which gets then put on the computer
09:27you can compare it
09:29then with the laps before
09:30and you see
09:31which change actually
09:33changed the settings on the bike.
09:35Yeah, noticeable difference.
09:37Okay, very good.
09:38When you do a change
09:39in the setting
09:40you feel it directly
09:41it's not like on competitors
09:43that you do a change
09:45and you don't feel it
09:46and you have to do another change
09:47and you try to think
09:48if you feel it
09:49on this bike
09:50you do a change
09:51and you feel it.
09:52One of the new features
09:54that we've got on the KTM 1390
09:55Super Juke R and R Evo
09:57is a function that
09:59enables the rider
10:01to not flip over
10:03when he's accelerating
10:04in second, third or fourth gear
10:06but it's also got
10:07different levels of control
10:09so it's a safety benefit
10:11it's a safety feature
10:12we had to name them
10:13in different levels
10:14so we got very low
10:15all the way to low, medium, high
10:18and then very high.
10:19let me go and try some different levels
10:21with fast laps
10:22just to double check
10:24or back check
10:25that we don't need
10:26to change anything.
10:27at one test
10:43we had to test
10:45the anti-wheelie mode
10:47and due to the fact
10:48I'm quite close
10:49to a perfect pillion rider
10:51so from terms of the height
10:53and weight
10:54I had to go on
10:56the back of the bike
10:57my Hannes was riding
10:58and the managers
11:00of the Proving Ground
11:01stopped us
11:02and they asked us
11:03if we are crazy
11:04why do we play around here
11:06like stupid
11:07and we could prove them
11:08no, we have to test this
11:10with the pillion
11:11to test the different height
11:13of the wheel
11:14if it does recognize
11:15actually the pillion
11:16also on the bike.
11:17medium is so much fun
11:19I mean
11:20I've convinced myself
11:21I could ride a medium
11:22all day
11:23if I was chasing a lap time
11:25probably keep it in low
11:26and slip level 1 or 2
11:29I've leveled 4
11:31it's the blue line here
11:33at around 30 degree lean angle
11:36between 7 and 8% slope
11:39turn eight
11:43third gear
11:4520% slope
11:48we come here
11:49with both Slicks
11:50and our
11:51Michelin Park GP
11:53to find a setting
11:54that works for both tires
11:55traction control settings
11:56might be slightly different
11:57on the street tire
11:59even though it's a
12:01hyper sport tire
12:03it's a very capable tire
12:04on the street obviously
12:05and we realize
12:06that it works very well
12:07on the track
12:09just making sure
12:10that every eventuality
12:11is covered
12:12for every customer
12:13that might want to bring
12:14the bike on track
12:15with the Power GP
12:16or whatever Slick
12:17he decides to use
12:18it's all covered
12:34actually I remember also
12:35some cool facts
12:36from the first impressions
12:37of our test riders
12:38it was the first test
12:40on a racetrack
12:41it was in Brunnen
12:42and they went out
12:43with the old bike
12:44but with the new engine
12:45already inside
12:46and they were so
12:47astonished by the beat
12:48of the cam shift
12:50Jeremy actually said
12:51the bike goes the more
12:52vertical than horizontal
12:54getting to test on track
12:55with our MotoGP team
12:56and our Moto2 team
12:57was pretty special as well
12:59and it's pretty funny
13:00because you know
13:01the guys that turned up
13:02on the Moto2 bike
13:03we were able to run with them
13:04on the Moto2 bike
13:05R&D team here
13:06the motorsport team
13:07over here
13:08I'm watching
13:09everybody on track
13:10together
13:11and I'm making sure
13:12that we're keeping
13:13out of the way
13:14but well
13:15that was one to remember
13:16first time we ever
13:17rode the 1390
13:18Super Duke R
13:20what makes me really proud
13:22is when riders sit
13:24the first time
13:25on the Super Duke
13:26and they come back
13:27from their test
13:28they put the helmet off
13:29and they have a smile
13:30from here to here
13:31and are just happy
13:33and are astonished
13:34about this new Super Duke
13:36It's been a long journey
13:40developing the 1390 Super Duke R
13:42everything from the brand new
13:46semi-active suspension settings
13:48our new software
13:49that we used in those settings
13:51our new hardware
13:52our new suspension settings
13:54it's been a lot of hard work
13:56but also very rewarding
13:58because when we finish up
14:00on a day like this
14:01and everybody's happy
14:02and smiling
14:03and the bikes are all going
14:04back in the truck
14:05in one piece
14:06which is always a good thing
14:07then we know we've done
14:09a pretty good job
14:10so super excited to see
14:12what happens
14:13when we get this bike
14:14to launch
14:19Now seeing this
14:20finished product
14:21it was a big honour
14:22to me
14:23to be chief engineer
14:24of this project
14:25to be part of this
14:26awesome team
14:27and I really look forward
14:29to see people riding
14:31this bike
14:32out in the streets
14:40again
14:41to find a new
14:43new
14:44and
14:45to be able to
14:47see people
14:49who are
14:50now
14:51they
14:52are
14:53they
14:54who are
14:55who are
14:56now
14:57who's
14:58they
14:59who are
