00:00.
00:03Kangaroo collisions are going up over time.
00:07People underestimate the risk caused by kangaroos
00:10and their chances of hitting one.
00:14I was going to work, all of a sudden one just popped out.
00:17I think I was pretty lucky.
00:18If I had gone through the windscreen I may not have walked away.
00:21Others sadly aren't so lucky.
00:23Across Australia, particularly in winter,
00:26you'll see dead kangaroos along the road
00:28marked with paint like this.
00:30It signals that they've been checked for joeys
00:32by a licensed rescuer.
00:34Tens of thousands of drivers hit kangaroos on our roads.
00:37The collisions we've seen are devastating.
00:40As the maker of the Amarok,
00:42one of Australia's most popular utes,
00:44Volkswagen has always innovated
00:46to make driving on our regional roads safer.
00:49Three years ago, we set out to develop
00:51the world's first scientifically proven kangaroo deterrent.
00:55Introducing Roo Badge.
00:58A revolutionary accessory that can transform
01:03the iconic Volkswagen Badge into a protective audio shield.
01:09Being developed with the University of Melbourne,
01:12Roo Badge connects to an in-car app
01:14that uses machine learning to compare
01:16the vehicle's GPS coordinates against kangaroo distribution data
01:20to create a unique audio deterrent
01:22for the particular species inhabiting that location.
01:25By mixing natural and artificial sounds in real time
01:29that Roo Badge projects as a focused beam of high frequency sound.
01:34When the signal hits a kangaroo,
01:36it alerts them of approaching danger,
01:38deterring them from the road.
01:40We're working on sounds that will be meaningful to eastern grey kangaroos.
01:45Things like dingo calls,
01:47alarm calls made by birds,
01:49and the alarm thumps that kangaroos make to warn each other.
01:53Later on, we'll be able to tweak it to the other species.
01:55After a series of trials, we're entering the next phase.
01:59Control testing on moving vehicles.
02:01We need sufficient data to show that we've got an effect.
02:05We want a stimulus that is meaningful to the kangaroos.
02:08We'll stay with them,
02:09that they'll respond time and time again in a predictable way.
02:13We're also in talks with our partners in Europe and North America
02:16to enable Roo Badge to deter their biggest problem.
02:20What's interesting about deer relative to kangaroos
02:24is they're very similar in body size, head size and ear size.
02:28What we find with kangaroos has application for deer as well.
02:32To think the Volkswagen Roo Badge
02:34could not only reduce kangaroo collisions across Australia,
02:37but potentially animal collisions across the globe,
02:40is pretty amazing.
