The NSW childcare regulator has taken no enforcement action in well over half the cases it investigated involving childcare workers accused of the sexual or physical abuse of a child, the ABC can reveal.

00:00An analysis of the data over five years shows no action was taken following 70% of the regulator's
00:09investigations into claims a childcare worker had sexually or physically abused an infant
00:15in a childcare centre. There have been more than 1,800 allegations of abuse reported by
00:20a childcare provider about staff members since 2020, including over 400 just last year.
00:27In only one in 10 cases, the childcare regulator has taken statutory compliance action, its toughest
00:34measure, which includes banning workers from the industry. The regulator says it investigates
00:39every allegation thoroughly. Since 2021, 37 childcare workers have been prosecuted and
00:46more than 200 prohibited from the industry. The Premier says his government is reforming
00:51the sector.
00:51I know parents are concerned about this. The situation as it's currently constituted is
00:56nowhere near good enough.
00:58The ABC's Four Corners team identified almost 150 childcare workers convicted, charged or
01:04accused of sexual abuse and inappropriate conduct in Australia, including five in New South Wales,
01:10currently before the courts.
