00:00Welcome back to a short video on the TuningBlock channel.
00:05Today, we're going to talk briefly about the topic of exhaust flap control, specifically for this vehicle.
00:12This time, we're going to do it ourselves, in our garage at home, as you can see.
00:19And yes, we have, well, okay, the manufacturer isn't listed here, but okay.
00:25Okay, I don't necessarily want to advertise it here.
00:30So, first of all, the system works.
00:32Oh yes, the manufacturer is listed here.
00:38And there are, how should I say it, people just want to sell their products, and yes, not everything is necessarily mentioned there.
00:45So, the most important thing right away, if any of you are planning to install something like this in your 5 series,
00:51I think it fits in all 5 series models that have a box control system up to the M5.
00:58The biggest problem here is that the vehicle, as you can see, has been disassembled.
01:01It's not rocket science, it's quick and easy to do.
01:04And here in this area, BMW also has a small rubber stopper where you can feed the cables through.
01:11This isn't necessarily rocket science, but no one tells you that there's probably no hole in every BMW 5 series on the right-hand side.
01:18That means you have to be brave and, let's say, cut a hole yourself.
01:26For one thing, it's particularly difficult to get to.
01:29Secondly, it's also a bit of a challenge to cut a hole in the bodywork.
01:33Even if it's only for a 1 cm plug, nevertheless, I've done it now.
01:37However, this is just a rough estimate.
01:39So, to test the function first, the hole will be sanded down further.
01:43I have a relatively large rubber stopper.
01:46So don't be surprised if the hole looks terrible.
01:50But it will be fine, right?
01:52So, I'll sand it down so that this large rubber stopper fits in exactly,
01:55and the cable will go through it in the middle.
01:57So, everything's fine.
01:59No liquid can get on it from below because it's like a false bottom.
02:02I'll treat it with some rust protection, apply body adhesive, then glue the plug in with it, and that's it.
02:10So, it's not rocket science.
02:13The cable still runs along here somewhere.
02:17The idea is to root it in this area.
02:20That's also quick to do, there's really nothing to it.
02:24The biggest hurdle is definitely this missing hole on the right side.
02:28You should just squeeze it in yourself, I'd say.
02:33For the connection, there are two cables on each side that go through here.
02:38It's already routed, though.
02:40You can get the cable out of this area here.
02:44You definitely have to remove the heat shield.
02:46Take these two screws, this one and this one, off.
02:49Then bend the heat shield a little bit.
02:51And then in exactly the area where the screw is attached,
02:54there's a relatively large hole, one to two centimeters, an opening.
02:58You'll have to fiddle around a bit, I'd say, but then the cable will definitely get through.
03:05Um, you insert the original exhaust flap connector,
03:08you connect it to the cable from the box and then the cable comes out of the box,
03:11which in turn connects to the exhaust flap.
03:16What's also not included is any kind of mat protection or anything for the cables here.
03:21Um, I'll get that later too.
03:25And also this area here where you can see the cable, I'd say it's not really my thing.
03:31So, I'll definitely seal it with some sealing tape.
03:34That's how BMW does it.
03:36And then a typical mat protection is laid along here up to about here and that's it.
03:40I'll definitely install that later.
03:45Yes, the same thing here in this area.
03:49That's where I've made the hole, right?
03:51I've hammered it in somewhere at the top.
03:54Um, it's relatively easy to pull the cable down.
03:57Um, the cable tie, you can replace it.
03:59This is the original BMW plug.
04:02Simply cut the original tie, insert a new one, attach the cable, and you're done.
04:07Um, the original, the original plug, you connect that too and you can push it up a bit here.
04:12There's enough space, no liquid can get on it in any way.
04:15Anyway, these are, um, um, splash proof plugs, so nothing can happen anyway.
04:22There will definitely be some protection here too and I'll cover the cables here too.
04:26Because especially in winter or when things get a bit tricky.
04:31Um, yeah.
04:35Otherwise, but as I said, the box isn't attached yet.
04:39I'll just look for a position here.
04:40Um, there's actually enough space behind the paneling.
04:43Um, you can attach the box there, then the cable can be laid properly and, um, that's it.
04:49There's no need for an extra power connection, because the device is powered by the original plugs from the flap system.
04:57And yes, that's basically it for the installation.
05:02I'll show you again when the car is assembled.
05:05You can't see anything anymore and then of course I'll show you how it works.
05:08So, the car is assembled now.
05:10I won't show you again, even though I said that earlier, because it's completely assembled, you can't see anything anymore.
05:16I've sealed the holes, as it should be, and yes, everything works well.
05:21The car is relatively cold now, which means that it will probably run in cold start mode for a few seconds when starting.
05:28We can try that out right away and I hope that comes across well on camera.
05:31Here's the remote control again, it has a small slider on it with three buttons, one, two and three.
05:38The first opens the hatch, the second closes the hatch, the second closes it in the standard state, and the third always closes it.
05:45Also, I definitely use it, I'll leave it like this, I only use the first two buttons, because if you keep the flap closed and don't think about it and then give it full throttle, then that's definitely not good for the engine.
05:59So I think it's a good function, it's there and good, but I won't use it.
06:02Uh, when I start the car now, the flaps are open and yes.
06:23I hope you can hear it now.
06:32Now they're open and now they're closed.
06:37So, the car isn't exactly quieter now, but it's a noticeable difference, especially when driving.
06:42I'll open it again now.
06:49And close it again.
06:56I'll see if that works.
06:57So, I'll hold down the two buttons now and it should open and close five or six times and set the new mode.
07:21Exactly, so now it's closed.
07:23And that means every time you start the car again, it always starts with the flaps closed.
07:30Uh, of course, that's a function I don't want.
07:33I do it the other way around.
07:34For me, it always starts with opening.
07:36That means holding the button down for ten seconds.
07:47Now it readjusts itself.
07:53Exactly, and that's basically it.
07:58I hope this video helps you if you're planning on doing the same thing on your vehicle.
08:03One more thing, it's not permitted under the Road Traffic Act.
08:08So, you're not allowed to use the system.
08:11Uh, it's been installed on this vehicle as a test and it's coming out again.
08:15Uh, yeah, that's basically our job.
08:18You've seen how it works and until the next video.
