00:00Hello and welcome back to the Tuning Blog Channel.
00:04Um, and with a short, well, how should I say, tutorial with instructions.
00:10Today we're going to talk about removing lettering.
00:13There are two of the manufacturer specific letterings installed on this car.
00:18Um, we want to remove them. There was a reason for that.
00:22We recently wrote a blog post about it, and um, yes, there was a bit of a description of how it works, the process, etc.
00:30But then we were asked in the next few days if we couldn't document it in a short video, which I'm trying to do now.
00:37Um, this time the video isn't from a garage.
00:42For one thing, um, yeah, I didn't get an appointment to demonstrate it there, like I usually do.
00:47And for another thing, um, you don't really need one, because your garage at home is more than enough to remove lettering like this.
00:55No crazy knowledge or special materials are required.
00:58Um, in terms of materials, I've prepared the following.
01:04I have a heat gun.
01:07I think a normal blowtorch should work under normal circumstances.
01:12This one is adjustable, you can set the temperatures.
01:15I don't think you necessarily need one, a normal blowtorch should be sufficient.
01:19You use it to loosen the letters and then try to remove them.
01:27Then we have a paint cleaner and a scourer.
01:30And we also have the tooth side here.
01:33Tooth side.
01:34You can also use stronger thread or sewing thread or something like that.
01:38I'll try it completely without it for now.
01:42If that doesn't work, then the tooth side is a way to remove the letters.
01:45The area here is simply heated accordingly, depending on the letter, and then I'll see if I can loosen it with my fingers alone so that I can remove the letter.
01:56And if that doesn't work, then the tooth side is a way to do it by simply guiding it behind the letter and, using the sawing motion, separating the letter from the paint.
02:09Of course, you should be careful not to get any paint on it, otherwise you'll end up with some damage and scratches.
02:18That should of course be avoided.
02:21Um, one more piece of information in advance.
02:24If you plan to remove the letters, then make sure that it's also possible to do so without any problems on your vehicle.
02:30Um, let's say, on many vehicles, it's simply glued on like this.
02:33Um, it's not rocket science to remove it, but there are also vehicles that have these locking lugs on the back of the letters.
02:41So manufacturers do this with these locking lugs, and of course, they then leave a hole in the sheet metal.
02:48Um, you should definitely find out about this in advance, because if the letter is gone and the hole is there, it's already too late.
02:56Then you have to fill it and paint it, and whether that's worth the effort or working with some kind of cover caps,
03:01I don't think it will look any better than the factory lettering in the end.
03:06To find this out, you should simply open the trunk, maybe remove the lining inside,
03:11and then you should be able to see if there are any holes or locking pins in there or not.
03:15I won't do it on this car because I know it's just glued on.
03:18Just a heads up for you.
03:20Otherwise, let's get started and yes, I'll show you how to remove it.
03:26However, I'll only show you on this side over there, this XD logo, it's the same principle.
03:31I don't have to show you that now, right?
03:36So, I hope you can understand me a little bit.
03:38Uh, the hairdryer is also coming on and on top of that the weather is really miserable.
03:44Uh, yes, wind and rain are also acoustically affected here.
03:47When blowing, make sure that it doesn't get too hot, otherwise the paint will peel off.
04:01Yes, then you'll have the same problem with repainting as if there were holes in it.
04:05Okay, I'm gonna try it now, let's just hold my hand in front of it.
04:15I don't think it should go over 150 degrees and a distance of maybe 30 centimeters.
04:19Exactly, so it's best to hold your hand in front of it every now and then, I think, then you
04:32can pretty much gauge how hot it is and whether it's causing problems or not.
04:36Luckily, the car is still wet here.
04:42That means that if the raindrops have disappeared, it's already a good sign that the paint is definitely
04:46at a decent temperature and maybe that's enough to be able to remove it.
04:49Yeah, that means that the air should be able to remove it.
04:52That means that the air is going to be able to remove it.
04:53Let's go.
04:55Mm-hmm.
04:55Thank you.
04:56Thank you.
05:08Thank you.
05:12Thank you.
05:16Thank you.
05:16So, it's already at a pretty good temperature and by the way, there's a main road in addition
05:26to the rain and wind, but I think you can understand me.
05:33I'm going to try it now to see if you can remove the letters.
05:37Yes, it can be removed quite easily, uh, it's been removed now.
05:50Now we still have some residual glue on it.
05:53Uh, normally you remove all that first, of course, and then start on the glue, I'll show
05:58you anyway.
05:59Well, this works quite often.
06:02Let's see if it works here too, by rolling it away like this.
06:07Just be careful not to destroy the paint.
06:09Okay, that doesn't really work now.
06:12Um, then simply an adhesive remover or alternatively a little bit of Spiritus should work just as
06:18well.
06:19I'll show you that later.
06:21I didn't film the Spiritus here in the front.
06:24I still have to get it.
06:25Then we'll mix it in a little and then it should come off really easily.
06:28Now I'll remove the other letters first.
06:37It's much harder with this letter.
06:46But I'd like to pick it up.
06:47I don't necessarily want it to break and I think it'll break quickly here if you try
06:51to force it.
06:52That's why I'm going to try it now with a little bit of tooth side.
07:05I'm going to start behind the letters, so to speak, and then just use a sawing motion
07:09under the tooth side.
07:18It's really great, but it worked before.
07:20Well, you probably need a bit more force or just use a bit less force.
07:24Uh, that works, I've already reached the end.
07:33Maybe you could just double up on the tooth side.
07:37I can try that again.
07:41Okay, now that's the picture.
07:47Yeah, you just can't use too much force.
08:00It's already enough, but you can keep going.
08:05So, half of the letters are gone.
08:11I'll try it again with the floss, but otherwise just keep using the tooth side, double up, maybe
08:16triple up or whatever, use less force.
08:20It's a bit of a test of patience, but it works, it's reliable.
08:30The last letter has also come loose.
08:33Yeah, the glue is a bit of a problem now.
08:42So I think you should first try to loosen it as far as possible with your fingernail.
08:46And of course always be careful with the paint, but normally you shouldn't really scratch it
08:50with your fingernail.
08:51Okay, so the rough stuff is gone now, as you can see.
09:06And yes, let's say, in a car paint shop, you would use something like, what do you call
09:11it?
09:13An eraser with a rubber attachment, which is powered by compressed air, and then you
09:17would simply sand it off.
09:19However, there is also the risk that the paint will simply get warm and get damaged, but yes,
09:24that's what the professionals do when they want to remove something like that.
09:29But we'll just try it now with a little thinner, so not too much spirit.
09:33As I said, that attacks the paint.
09:36Especially with a solid paint that doesn't have a clear coat on it, you should be careful
09:40and not rub too hard, because at some point the paint will dissolve and then you'll have
09:44a damaged area.
09:46So definitely be careful there.
09:49It's also possible that the area will become a little dull due to the thinner, the spirit
09:53or the brush cleaner or whatever it's called.
09:56Um, if that's the case, then of course the pulleter is there to polish it up again and then,
10:02um, seal it with varnish, sorry, with wax or whatever, and yes, then the area is ready,
10:08I would say.
10:28The glue is now soaking up, maybe do it two or three times in a row, then wait a moment.
10:46This is a process that you simply have to repeat until it finally works.
10:51Exactly.
10:52So, it's just aired out a bit now.
11:07I have to go over it a bit more, but you can see that the remaining glue is now simply coming
11:11off.
11:12And it's best to do this with your finger for now.
11:13That's the least amount of damage, or alternatively with a cloth.
11:16Um, and then you can get it off.
11:25So, now the glue is removed.
11:32It looks pretty good too.
11:36You can see small dull spots here.
11:39This is simply due to the, um, the solvent, the paint solvent, the glue solvent.
11:46So, I would definitely try the pulleter in any case, no matter what paint or vehicle, and
11:52that's what I'm doing now.
11:56But I don't think I need to give you any instructions because it also depends on the polish.
12:01Usually, you just put it on a cloth and rub it in several times until the dull spots are gone.
12:07Then apply a little more wax and everything is fine.
12:10I hope this little video has helped you and I would be happy if you would subscribe and
12:15see you next time.
12:17Bye.
12:18So, I'll quickly show you the result again.
12:22The weather isn't any better yet, but I think you can still see what you're supposed to
12:26see.
12:27So, it worked.
12:29Both the right and left are gone.
12:31There are no more shadows or streaks to be seen.
12:37Exactly.
12:38Everything is as it should be.
12:42How can you actually go to the toilet?
12:43See you next time.
12:44Yeah, it's the last time.
12:45I can see you.
12:46You can see you next time.
12:47Ew!
12:48Bye-bye.
12:49Bye-bye.
12:50Bye-bye.
12:52Can't you see you next time?
12:55Bye-bye.
12:56Bye-bye.
12:58Bye-bye.
12:59Bye-bye.
13:09Bye-bye.
13:10Bye-bye.
13:11Bye-bye.
13:12Ja, ja, ja, ja.
13:42Bis zum nÀchsten Mal.
14:12Bis zum nÀchsten Mal.
