02:42Before we started at BMW Motorsport, we naturally thought about what the requirements were for the racing engine.

02:50Of course, the sedan already brings that with it, but in the racing car it is also important to have the center of gravity as low and as central as possible.
02:58That's why we started by lowering the engine down low.
03:05To do that, we changed one fundamental thing.

03:27The crankcase around it and the cylinder head.
03:34But underneath there was now only a flat dry sump with an oil pump that immediately disposed of the oil.
03:46We were able to leave the turbochargers in the same position, but they were released into the open via a large volume racing system via a racing cut.
04:03And on the intake side we built a special air collector with two throttle valves, so that there was space underneath for the oil tank.
04:15This meant that we were now almost 20 centimeters lower in the car and could also see the entire width of the engine deep down.

04:30The requirement was to lower the engine as low as possible.
04:34We couldn't live with this extremely high oil pan and marine engine.
04:38That's why we made a completely new dry sump, which was cast in the foundry in Landshut.
04:44It is now 30 millimeters high below the engine.
04:49Using these extraction pumps, we extract all the oil from the engine and bring it to the oil tank, from where it is returned to the engine via the pressure pump.
04:59The separation system we have at the top is important here, as it separates the air and the oil from each other and ensures that we always have oil at the extraction point.
05:09This separator is a special development that we have made here.
05:12It was manufactured using the adaptive machining process.
05:15We have been using this in racing for 20 years, but it has now also found its way into series production.
05:20Cooling is very important for the series M4.
05:29I have the integrated intercooler here.
05:32The hot compressed air from the turbocharger comes from here via the throttle valve and is cooled in the indirect intercooler.
05:41This is connected to a separate cooling circuit of the vehicle.
05:45The cooled air then flows into the engine via the manifold via six outlets.
05:49With the racing engine, we were able to use a direct intercooler because the engine is hidden deep and far back in the chassis, which allowed us to minimize pressure losses even further.

06:03At the same time, we divided it between two throttle valves, which improved the engine's responsiveness and were able to separate cylinders one to three and four to six, which also allowed us to significantly increase the power output.
06:16In addition to the differences we've just seen, there are of course many components that are identical between these two engines.
06:27For example, I've brought the connecting rod and the piston here, and these are the exact components that determine the power output, both for the sole engine and for the enhanced version in the racing engine.

06:44The manifold and turbine housing are cast in a single piece and dimension to be strong enough to provide both the power required for the sole engine and the higher power required for the racing engine without having to make any modifications.

07:01The crankcase, the cylinder head, the entire interior of the cylinder head, the cylinder head cover, all of that is identical.
07:08The exhaust gas now flows from the turbochargers to the exhaust system via two highly efficient cuts close to the engine.
