00:00How big a blow is it to be out of the Carabao Cup when you look back at your selection?
00:13Would you pick the same team again or any regrets?
00:16What was your first word?
00:18How big a blow is it? Blame?
00:20A big blow.
00:21Blow, okay.
00:22It's always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition.
00:27But it's the same selection I did tonight as I did last season in rounds like this.
00:33There are many reasons maybe why we've lost 5 out of 6 or 6 out of 7.
00:40None of them are good enough to accept losing so many.
00:44So I can come up with arguments or reasons but none of them will be enough to go to that standard
00:54because at Liverpool losing 5 out of 6 or 6 out of 7 is always too much.
00:58But if I look at our performance against Brentford, to use that as an example,
01:03two days after we played Frankfurt away, I saw there a team that maybe struggled with playing free games in seven days.
01:13Again, not an excuse but to lose that game of football.
01:18Which is not a complete surprise to me if I see the struggle some players have had in preseason
01:23and players that came from different leagues and it's a new challenge for them to play at Premier League
01:31and Champions League level free games in seven days.
01:35So again in two days we play Villa and the last time I played a player that we thought was ready for that programme
01:45but it turned out maybe that he wasn't, it was Alexander Isak where he went out with an injury.
01:50Last time we played Southampton Giovanni Leone went out with an injury in a game like this
01:55and we got the red card for Hugo Ekiteke after two yellows.
01:59And I think at this moment of time we have only 15-16 players available
02:03and I'm talking then about players of our squad available,
02:08then to add to that that this club has always used this competition for their academy players as well,
02:18so for the non-starters and academy players this felt to me as the right decision
02:22and I haven't changed my opinion about that after the results
02:26because with our starters we haven't been able to win a lot from Palace as well.
02:31Obviously you've been able to protect your first-team players, your senior players
02:37from the Champions League tonight.
02:39Do you worry that it might put a bit more pressure on that game on Saturday?
02:43What are your expectations having given those players a rest tonight?
02:47I don't think it's possible if you lose five out of six that there's now,
02:52after six out of seven even more pressure.
02:55So if you are in a run of results like this, if you play for Liverpool, if you manage Liverpool,
03:01you know the pressure is there and I don't think it has changed much after this loss,
03:08but if it did then maybe the most positive thing about tonight was that the position we were in 2-0 down
03:17and we weren't really pushing for a goal because we weren't able to.
03:21The fans were behind the team, were supporting us,
03:25and that gives me the feeling that Saturday when our players will show how much it means to them,
03:34our fans will be incredibly supportive for us Saturday.
03:38But again we face a team that has rested the week to play us, and that's Villa.
03:44Paul Joyce?
03:46I think Ryan has a good chance. The other ones are going to be, let's wait and see, tomorrow and Friday.
04:03I don't know all of them, but I think Ryan has the best chance from all of them.
04:09A year ago in those rounds you had Salah on the bench and some of the other senior players on the bench,
04:21was it the fact that he wanted zero risk at all that he wouldn't have them even...?
04:27I'm not too sure if that is right what you are saying,
04:30because when we played West Ham I don't think Salah was on the bench,
04:33but maybe I'm wrong, maybe you were right, but I don't think he was.
04:40So a year ago I did, we did the same, but maybe the line-up felt differently.
04:45I said this also for the television, that before I went out I saw City's line-up,
04:51and I don't think they had one starter from the weekend,
04:55but it felt as if if you look at their line-up they played with their 11 starters.
04:59So maybe it also gives a little bit of an insight that everybody has always said
05:05how big of a squad we are having when we played Chelsea,
05:08I said they are missing eight, but they can still bring Estivio in.
05:11Now we are only missing four players at the moment,
05:15and already we needed to start with four players under the age of 19,
05:21and after I made two substitutions we were on six.
05:27Is there anything you can say to Nalo after that second yellow compare-back card in two appearances?
05:39I didn't need to say that much because another thing which I liked,
05:46but it's not the most important thing, but Ibu and Virgil immediately went inside
05:51to speak to him, to talk to him.
05:53So yeah, that tells me that they are great human beings in a moment like this
05:59when a young player for the second time is being sent off,
06:02maybe the first time after he played against PSV, I'm not 100% sure,
06:06but I think he did,
06:08that they feel how difficult that moment for him is to go inside and be supportive for him.
06:14So it wasn't needed that I took care of them, these two already took care of him.
06:21Will, last one.
06:22The performance on Calum Rams, that was his first game for three years,
06:25as you could make it out in the formation as well,
06:28if you could have all three, is that something you could look at?
06:31No, before I answer the first one, I got the same question a second ago.
06:36When we play teams that are playing 5-2-3,
06:38it has mostly been that Ryan Gravenberg is taking the inverted left winger,
06:43so then you're also defending with five,
06:46it's not for the first time that we build up with three players as well,
06:49so I wouldn't see too much into that.
06:52I think Kelvin had a very, very decent performance,
06:57Calum won the ball, like I don't know if I said it over here,
07:01but the first half-hour I think we had better chances than them actually,
07:06and he was part of that, so he played with composure,
07:16so a decent to good game for him.
07:22And I said also afterwards, yeah, if you make your debut after a 3-0 loss
07:25you might feel very, very, very disappointed,
07:28but the two of you can be quite happy with the way you've played
07:31your first time here at Anfield.
07:34Thank you, everyone.
