00:00How does boredom literally go to your head?
00:05Well, Adiola Agbana has started making hats and there are now all the rage in Nigeria.
00:11I didn't start intentionally. It was as a result of boredom and then failing in several businesses.
00:20What began as a simple way to kill time quickly became a viral trend thanks to Adiola's post on
00:26social media. Let's take a look at why her DIY hats have struck a chord.
00:31I would say that my openness to teach was what helped me a lot and people fall in love with me
00:40not because I'm the best but because I believe every woman deserves to be given an opportunity
00:50to learn a skill and I remember vividly that one of the reasons that made those businesses
00:57kept failing was because I didn't have mentors. Before we delve deeper into the secret of her hats
01:04that is who are her customers? On what occasions people were allured by Ruby? Let's take a look
01:11at how the self-made hat maker came up with the idea in the first place. It can't have been boredom alone.
01:17Before I studied editing at all I learned how to make hair and my mom was like ah this is a very
01:23good skill. I love it. I did it to survive at that time. So my mom usually sent me some products from
01:31the village and I would sell in the local market and I was doing that for a long time before I got fed up.
01:38Went back to school to study psychology. So it was the year I went back to school that I started
01:43allured by Ruby. I'm going to be walking you through the process of making one of my signature head pieces
01:48but I'm going to be making it with Siname straw hats. Any material at all can be used to make this
01:53butter hats but today I'm going to show you how to make with straw something different and classy.
02:02So the second part is to cut out a little piece that I can use to get this shape. So I have my water
02:09and I have my dye. So I apply the dye into the water and then I mix.
02:15From fabric to fashion Adiola's hands create beauty but beyond the bows and beads a completely different
02:24idea was maturing. Adiola wanted to use her skills to help others and above all to let women participate
02:31in her DIY trend. My Facebook grew into a full-blown physical academy on request. People now want to
02:40come and learn physically. They want to come and feel the classes. From the last class I taught you how
02:47to cover this cap. So today we are going to attach the crown to the brims. Okay this is a white brim and
02:55we're going to use this mesh. You know there are different types of mesh. This is one type. Measure 16 by 16.
03:02Let me see or 15 by 15. Let me see. Then let me show you what to do. Right? So for this one when you place it here
03:13you apply apply glue round. Why I think it's important to join a brand that empowers other women
03:19in skills which I do because sports. I love her because she's someone who deals with excellence
03:24and I know that I want to go far in this business. So it's a total commitment to associate myself with
03:29that so that I can learn this skill and also she's also open and she teaches with passion. Over 50 000
03:36people trained, inspired, transformed. How does it feel for Adiola knowing that her work made that possible?
03:43I teach my students about turning creativity into income and I always hammer on consistency and
03:52I won't say perfect but because nobody's perfect. Repetition. If you want to make money from something
04:00you must be willing to repeat and repeat and repeat because that is where mastery comes from. Next time
04:08you're bored remember that it's leisure that can shape hope and the future. Just like Adiola Agbana with
04:14our hats, brims, churro bands and fascinators.
