Unique initiatives break with tradition to help EU cross-border workers find jobs

How is sport connecting job seekers and recruiters across EU borders? New initiatives are looking beyond résumés to help cross-border workers find jobs.

00:00In Strasbourg, these 150 people aren't just exercising.
00:08They're taking part in a unique cross-border recruitment event
00:11that brings together employers and job seekers from France and Germany.
00:16We see that there's a team spirit that starts to grow,
00:19and we get to know a little bit of people.
00:21It's really nice.
00:22It's a great event here.
00:24There's a lot going on, a lot of different people.
00:27Here in Strasbourg, sport is bringing people together and breaking down barriers.
00:31French or German, employer or job seeker, it doesn't matter.
00:35At this job dating event, everyone's on the same team,
00:38chasing new opportunities across borders.
00:45Through sports and games, participants are quickly discovering each other's personalities.
00:50The organizers of the event, Ale Hobzun Job,
00:53say these activities reveal more about a person's character
00:57than any resume ever could.
00:59The CV is a barrier, in fact,
01:01which reaches human values.
01:03And today, this morning,
01:05we're going to share a moment of sport,
01:07share values to facilitate the relationships for recruitment.
01:11None of the participants know who is an employer and who is a job seeker.
01:15It's only later that the true identities are revealed,

01:28who will find a job in five months.
01:30Among the job seekers is Sonia,
01:33a French mother of two with 40 years of work experience.
01:36Earlier this year, she lost her job due to economic reasons.
01:41Though she lives in France,
01:57Sonia is mainly exploring job opportunities in Germany,
02:00where she spent most of her career.
02:02She's what's known as a cross-border worker,
02:05someone who lives in one country
02:07but commutes daily to work in another.
02:09Across Europe, around 1.8 million people share this status,
02:14using the EU's freedom of movement
02:16to adapt their education and experience
02:19to different workplace cultures.
02:21In France, an employer wants to have a diploma.
02:24In Germany, an German employer would rather have skills.
02:29In Kiel, Germany, Cedric is also a cross-border worker.
02:33The French manager of a German animal food processing factory,
02:37he is actively looking for new employees,
02:39regardless of the country where they come from.
02:42We have about 120 people in full time.
02:4560% are German workers,
02:47but we also have about 40% of transfrontal workers.
02:49It brings us a diversity of opinions, cultures,
02:53and specialities.
02:55It allows us to find a balance
02:57in relation to our industrial needs.
02:59Working abroad is not without challenges,
03:01as differences remain between EU member states
03:04in areas like administration, taxation,
03:07social security and labor rights.
03:09To facilitate the free movement of workers,
03:12the EU created the European Employment Services,
03:15or URES, which helps people find jobs
03:18and country-specific information.
03:21Within URES, cross-border partnerships
03:23focus on specific regions,
03:25like the Upper Rhine, which spans parts of France,
03:28Germany and Switzerland.
03:30We are one of the regions in Europe
03:32where there are the most transfrontal workers.
03:33We are talking about 100,000 transfrontal workers.
03:37All these people need advice and information.
03:40With 1,7 million euros in ESF Plus funding
03:44for the 2024-2026 period,
03:47URES-T Upper Rhine is implementing a series of initiatives
03:51aimed at fostering connections between workers and employers.
03:55We have a big budget that goes towards coaching.
03:58It is something that allows the employees
04:01to really adapt their candidates
04:04with the standards of the other country
04:07where he will candidate.
04:08But we also have a lot of innovative and innovative activities,
04:12such as Alley Hop2Job.
04:16Other EU tools that support worker mobility
04:19include Europass, a multilingual platform
04:21available in over 30 languages,
04:23offering free digital services
04:25to help users at every stage
04:27of their career and learning journey.
04:29In 2026, the European Commission
04:31will also present the Fair Labour Mobility Package
04:34to strengthen the European Labour Authority,
04:37combat worker exploitation
04:39and introduce a European Social Security Pass.

04:49workers can look beyond borders,
04:51boost local economies
04:53and help shape the Europe of tomorrow.
