01:30Yeah, we bought this house in 1966
01:33Yeah, this was the first house that we actually bought
01:41Because we used to live, my wife, myself and my son lived with my mother-in-law in Wales
01:49This was very special, this place
01:53I bought my first car as well, a red Jaguar 3.8
01:59So we had the new house, new car
02:02New life
02:05Hi
02:15Here we are, Manygate Lane
02:18Yeah
02:18You just came in the front
02:19That's right
02:20How was that?
02:21Fine, because we never used to come in that way
02:23It was always, we came in from the back
02:25The road is out there
02:27You park the car
02:28And then come in that way
02:30So it was nice coming in this way today
02:32Because I never used to see much of that out there
02:35When we bought the house in 1966
02:38This was a new development at the time
02:41We found a nice early clip of this time, we think
02:44Shall we have a look?
02:46Okay
02:46Oh yeah, they had this idea about me gardening
02:56That they wanted me to get in the garden
02:59I don't know why
03:00Because I've never been a big, big gardener
03:03But they must have thought it would be good for the, for the telly
03:07And it was brand new, you see
03:10So the garden had to be sorted out anyway
03:12Really, I'm glad I got married before I made the grade
03:22Because I would be frightened to get married to anybody
03:25In case they were just marrying me for my name and not me
03:28And then if I should happen to fall one day
03:32There would be nothing left
03:33But I know that my wife married me for me
03:36Because I was nobody at the time
03:42Linda, my wife, was thrilled to bits
03:49To have her own kitchen
03:51You know, our own bathroom
03:53Because in Wales
03:57At that time
03:58Bath was on a nail outside, you know, on the wall
04:01There was a TV there
04:07And then there was an L-shaped sitting arrangement
04:12We had a bar in the corner over there
04:14You know, a portable bar
04:15Which we thought was very posh
04:17At the time
04:19And there were a lot of film stars around
04:22John Gregson used to live around the corner
04:25Ian Hendry
04:26And Dickie Valentine lived at the end of this street
04:30Diana Dawes came over, you know
04:33Those were my neighbours
04:35But then Dickie Valentine's mother lived next door
04:39And she sometimes would complain
04:42About the noise that was being made here late at night
04:47I think most people think that
04:52Welsh people all work in the mines
04:54Well, this isn't true
04:55My father works in the mine
04:58Still does, as a matter of fact
05:00And a lot of Welsh boys go down the mine
05:04When they leave school
05:05But I never fancied it
05:07Because I've always wanted to be a pop singer
05:09Since I can remember
05:10I enjoyed my life in South Wales
05:20I liked going to the local club
05:23With my father and his brothers
05:25And my cousins
05:27In Treforest
05:28I loved that
05:30I couldn't wait to be one of them
05:33I was too young
05:34You know, and I thought
05:35One day, you know
05:37I'll be able to go with my cousins
05:40And my uncles
05:41To the Wood Road Club
05:43It was a great community
05:45To come from
05:47And how lucky we were
05:50To be born where we were born
05:53To those people
05:54You know, the salt of the earth
05:57Coal mining
05:58That's what they were
05:59But it was a wonderful experience
06:03And I wouldn't change it for the world
06:05All I remember more than anything else
06:10Is love
06:11There was so much love
06:13You don't really know how wonderful it is
06:18Until later
06:19When you look back at it
06:21I was always confident
06:38You know, as a child growing up
06:40Because I could always sing
06:41You know, so every time I sang
06:43People would listen
06:44So I thought
06:45This is going to work
06:46You know, this is what I'm going to do
06:48All my family sang
06:50So on my father's side
06:52And my mother's side
06:53They were singers
06:55So we would have parties on weekends
06:56So you would always
06:58And weddings
06:59I had a lot of cousins, you see
07:00That were getting married
07:02So it gave me an opportunity
07:05To get up and sing
07:06And I remember this old fella
07:08Who was an uncle of the girl
07:12That my cousin married
07:13He couldn't believe it
07:14When I sang in the house
07:16The reception afterwards
07:18And he said
07:20That this boy should not be singing for nothing
07:22You know, and he took his
07:23He had a flat cap on
07:24You know
07:25Coal mining
07:27Flat cap
07:28Threw it on the floor
07:29And he says
07:29Come on
07:30You know, let's
07:32So they all started throwing coins in
07:34While I was singing
07:35At this wedding
07:36And
07:38But then I had to take my cousins
07:40To the pictures
07:41With the money that I had made
07:43When you have a voice
07:48Or a musical talent of any kind
07:51And you can do it
07:54And get across to people
07:55And they respond
07:57It gives you confidence
07:59So then I started going around pubs
08:02Workman's clubs
08:03Which was a great outlet
08:05There was a local group
08:08That was playing at YMCA
08:10And their singer didn't show
08:12So I was having a few drinks
08:14With some friends of mine
08:15And came and asked me
08:17Would I go and sing
08:18And I said
08:19My God
08:19You know
08:20Friday night is
08:21Is beer night
08:23So we
08:25We started playing
08:27These workman's clubs
08:28And went all over South Wales
08:30That was a great training ground
08:31Bumble, hammer, bumble
08:33Got a gal
08:34Never send her
08:36We call it a great patender
08:38Got a gal
08:40Never send her
08:41An old school chum of mine
08:43Gordon Jones
08:44I said
08:46You must come and see
08:46This
08:47This boy in a group
08:48Called Tommy Scott
08:49And the senators
08:50And I said
08:51Where are they working
08:52It was miles over
08:53In another valley somewhere
08:55And we went over
08:56We sat down
08:58The place was heaving
08:59I'd seen most of the big stars
09:02In the world
09:02And I waited for him
09:03And he came on
09:04And halfway through the first number
09:06He was the greatest thing
09:06I'd ever seen
09:07That was Tom
09:08I had no idea
09:11That I would become a manager
09:12I had no intention
09:12It was in my mind
09:14The first thing
09:15I went from my mind
09:15All I knew is that
09:16I said to him
09:17If you come to London
09:19I think you should have to come to London
09:20London is the hub
09:21The centre
09:22He came up
09:23And I was doing demonstration records
09:24Of songs I was writing at the time
09:25Took him in on the studios
09:27Then he came up and lived
09:29With my wife and I
09:31In Bayswater
09:32I got on very well with him
09:34And he was a singer
09:35In a vocal group
09:36Called the Viscounts
09:37They had a couple of
09:39Two or three hit records
09:40That I'd seen on television
09:42So I knew he was a professional person
09:45That could help me
09:46So then he said
09:47Okay
09:47And I'll become your manager
09:48Gordon
09:50At this point
09:51Can we just have a look at a monitor
09:52Because we've got a shot of Tom
09:53Around about that period
09:55Which I think you might
09:56Care to look at
09:57Shall we just have a look at that
09:58Tell me what I say
10:00Tell me what I say
10:02What I say
10:04Tell me what I say
10:05What I say
10:06Tell me what I say
10:08What I say
10:09Tell me what I say
10:10Tell me one more time
10:14In Beat Room
10:15There was an audience
10:16Like Top of the Pops
10:17You know
10:18So I was performing
10:19To those people
10:20In the audience
10:21One more time
10:22One more time
10:24I want to get right
10:25In their faces
10:25You know
10:26I want to explode
10:28What I say
10:29What I say
10:30Tell me what I say
10:31What I say
10:32What I say
10:33Tell me what I say baby
10:34What I say
10:35Tell me what I say
10:36Oh yeah
10:37What I say
10:38Tell me what I say
10:39What I say
10:41Tell me what I say
10:42In those days
10:42There was a variety
10:44Within the show
10:45One more time
10:46One more time
10:46One more time
10:47I remember Julie Rogers
10:48Was on the same show
10:49She had a ballad
10:50Called The Wedding
10:51And she was on that show
10:53With John Lee Hooker
10:54And the Kinks
10:56And myself
10:57Tell me what I say
10:59Hi there
11:03Welcome once again
11:03To the Beat Room
11:04Here at Shepherd's Push
11:05First in view this week
11:06Is this tall handsome lad
11:08Called Tom Jones
11:09Who now gives us
11:10His latest record title
11:11Called
11:11Chills and the Fever
11:13Chills and the Fever
11:17Yeah
11:17Chills and the Fever
11:20Wow
11:21In the BBC
11:22In 1964
11:24You went to a big TV studio
11:26And I remember seeing
11:28Pan's people outside
11:29Rehearsing
11:30And I thought
11:31Wow
11:32This is it
11:32I was part of it
11:36Hold me tight
11:37Tell me baby
11:39What a love
11:40All night
11:41I get
11:41Ooh
11:42Chills and the Fever
11:44Yeah
11:46Chills and the Fever
11:48Wow
11:49Baby
11:49Chills and the Fever
11:51Chills and the Fever
11:53What you give to me
11:55So coming into
11:57Dekker Studios
11:59That was the first
11:59Real recording studio
12:01That I'd ever been in
12:02Because it was all
12:04Brand new
12:04You see
12:05We had come from
12:06Wales
12:06And going into
12:09A recording studio
12:10Was a big deal
12:12I auditioned
12:14For Peter Sullivan
12:15And he said
12:16Yeah
12:17You know
12:18I can hear you
12:19And
12:20If you fancy it
12:22We get a
12:23Three record deal
12:25Three singles
12:26The Beatles
12:27You know
12:28They auditioned
12:29For Dekker
12:30First of all
12:30And they were
12:31Retused
12:31They were turned down
12:32And then they went
12:33To EMI
12:34And they accepted him
12:35So
12:36So it was the Rolling Stones
12:38And myself
12:39You know
12:40We were on Dekker
12:41At that particular time
12:43You're in London
12:45You're on Dekker
12:46Wow
12:47Your foot is
12:48Firmly in the door
12:50Yeah
12:51This was it
12:56That's the sound booth
12:59In there
12:59Yeah
13:00Good
13:01But Tom
13:02I think you could improve it
13:04If you do the second loose seal
13:06Give it much more expression
13:07Attack it
13:08On the second phrase
13:09It'll give it a hell of a lot more bite
13:11Okay
13:12Let's do it once again
13:13From the top
13:13Yes
13:28Life has changed
13:29For Tom Jones
13:30And the Squires
13:30Since it all happened
13:32Tom Jones
13:33The minor son
13:34From Pontypris
13:35The man
13:35With the all
13:36Swinging body
13:37Now it's a life
13:46Far away
13:46From the working men's clubs
13:48Of South Wales
13:49A life of
13:50One night stands
13:51Around Britain
13:52Of weekends
13:53Spent cutting new records
13:55In hot studios
13:56Sessions lasting hours
13:57At a time
13:58But Tom and the Squires
13:59Were rehearsing
14:00Some odd titles
14:01At these studios
14:02In North London
14:03When I called in
14:05Oh baby Lucy
14:08Baby setting
14:12For my heart
14:13Yeah
14:14Well there's nothing
14:16To you baby
14:17Right
14:17Good
14:18Good
14:19We'll try that again
14:21In a few moments
14:22Okay
14:22It felt great
14:24When you packed
14:25The whole thing in
14:26You know
14:27Even with a bigger orchestra
14:28We would try and
14:29Get them in this room
14:30And it sounded
14:31Tight
14:32More rock and roll
14:34The contract that I had
14:39With Decca
14:40Was three
14:41For three singles
14:42You only had three tries
14:44You know
14:45Three strikes
14:46And you're out
14:46So
14:47The first one
14:48Didn't make it
14:49So I thought
14:50We've got to get a song
14:51So Gordon said
14:55Well I got this song
14:56For Sandy Shore
14:57Because Sandy Shore
14:59Had a couple of hits
15:00And they were bumped
15:02You know
15:04Like that
15:04So that sort of
15:06Gave him the idea
15:06Of it's not unusual
15:07With a bump
15:08And he asked me
15:10Would I do the demo
15:11Well when I heard
15:14That demo back
15:14I said
15:16That's the song
15:17Now
15:19He said
15:19It's for Sandy Shore
15:20It's a nice
15:21You know
15:21Boston Nova
15:23Type thing
15:23Because I said
15:24Look
15:24If I don't get this song
15:25I'm going back to Wales
15:26Because I know
15:28This is the one
15:29It was number one
15:34March the first
15:35In 1965
15:36I was doing
15:37An Ed Sullivan show
15:38In April or May
15:40So it was
15:41Unbelievable
15:42It's not unusual
15:44To be loved
15:46By anyone
15:46It's not unusual
15:49To have fun
15:51With anyone
15:52When I see you
15:55Hanging about
15:56With anyone
15:57It's not unusual
16:00To see me cry
16:02On a dime
16:04I remember being
16:05In New York
16:06In a hotel
16:07And I had these
16:08Windows open
16:09And the cabs
16:10You said
16:10Oh, oh
16:11You know
16:11All night
16:12And I thought
16:12My God
16:13I'm in New York
16:14As a few months
16:19Before
16:20I was struggling
16:22It's not unusual
16:23It happens every day
16:25No matter what you say
16:27Sunday night
16:28Live television
16:31To millions of people
16:32Love will never do
16:36What you want to do
16:38You know, TV
16:39I realized
16:40Was the big thing
16:43When it's not unusual
16:48It's my first hit record
16:49My father was still
16:51Working in a coal mine
16:52And I had a
16:54You know
16:54A new Jaguar
16:55I had the new house
16:56And I went back to Wales
16:58Because I would go back
17:00Whatever chance I got
17:01I would drive back
17:03To Pontypris
17:04So one night
17:05On a Sunday
17:06I'd been out
17:07With my father
17:08And then we got back
17:08To the house
17:09And my mother
17:10Was cutting sandwiches
17:11For him
17:12I said
17:12Where are you going?
17:13He said
17:14I'm going to work
17:14I'm on the night shift
17:15I said
17:16You can't go to work
17:17And he said
17:18I'm a coal miner
17:20That's what I do
17:21I said
17:22I understand that
17:23But I'm making money
17:24I'm making a lot
17:25Of money now
17:25He said
17:26Yeah, but how long
17:27Is it going to last?
17:33That was a big deal
17:34For me
17:34You know
17:35To get him out
17:36Of the coal mine
17:36Because I didn't like
17:38It was a dangerous job
17:40You know
17:41When I gave them
17:42This house
17:42And we moved
17:43To Sunbury on Thames
17:44Which is not far away
17:45Sometimes you would
17:47Get depressed
17:47My mother called me
17:51She said
17:51Your father won't
17:52Get out of bed
17:52I said
17:54What's the matter
17:54With him?
17:55She said
17:55Come and talk to him
17:56So I came in
17:57Went up to that
17:58Bedroom there
17:59And I said
18:00What's the matter?
18:01I don't feel
18:02I'm
18:03You know
18:03I'm not
18:04Contributing anything
18:06You know
18:07For them to leave
18:08Everything they knew
18:10Was in Pontyprith
18:11He wanted to see
18:12His friends
18:13You see
18:13And they weren't here
18:14Because I was successful
18:19I had expected people
18:22Oh yeah
18:23Come on
18:23You know
18:24And they would all
18:24Be thrilled to bits
18:25But
18:26Were they?
18:27When I was doing
18:37These Ed Sullivan shows
18:38In 65
18:39He liked me
18:40Ed Sullivan took
18:41You know
18:42He really liked
18:42What I was doing
18:43So I did
18:44Like five or six of them
18:46So they moved
18:47The Ed Sullivan show
18:48From New York
18:49To L.A.
18:50So I had to go to L.A.
18:51Which was great
18:52And they said
18:57Elvis is here
18:57I would love to meet you
18:59Elvis
19:00I had a ballad out then
19:04Called With These Hands
19:05So when I met Elvis Presley
19:07On the set
19:08He started to walk towards me
19:10Singing With These Hands
19:12My song
19:13And I thought
19:15My God
19:16You know
19:17If the boys back home
19:18Could see me now
19:19With Elvis
19:21With These Hands
19:22I will bring
19:26I wanted to go to Vegas
19:31We were in L.A.
19:33So I went to Vegas
19:34To check it out
19:35Because I'd heard about it
19:36And seen it
19:37In the movies
19:37And it was small then
19:40You know
19:41There wasn't that many hotels
19:43So then they offered me
19:47The Flamingo
19:48Two shows a night
19:50For a month straight
19:52That's another thing
19:53You know
19:54With America
19:54Two shows every night
19:57You wouldn't see much daylight
20:00Because after you do the second show
20:03It was 8 o'clock
20:04And 12 o'clock
20:05Shows
20:06Then you'd go to see somebody
20:09In a lounge
20:09You know
20:10All the rock and roll singers
20:12By this time
20:13Were playing lounges
20:14Fats Domino
20:15You know
20:15I used to hang out with
20:16And Jackie Wilson
20:18You know
20:19And the Jerry Lee Lewis
20:20Was
20:21Little Richard
20:22So I would hang out
20:24With these fellas
20:25Until the sun came up
20:27So
20:28And then Elvis came
20:29To town
20:30And then he'd want to
20:32Stay up all night
20:32You know
20:33I will sing to you
20:41Long after stars
20:45Have lost their glow
20:47Ladies and gentlemen
20:51This is Tom Jones
20:53When I got my own show
20:57It was the biggest ever
20:59TV show
21:00From Great Britain
21:02To be shown on national television
21:04In America
21:05I mean I could do duets
21:07With people
21:08That I'd grown up listening to
21:10I mean my idols
21:12Still
21:12Are 50s rock and roll singers
21:15I could do the best
21:44Honey
21:46Honey
21:46It's sure
21:47You're rocking
21:47Roll
21:47Now when you're rocking
21:50And you're rolling
21:51You can't hear your mama call
21:53From the early early morning
21:57To the early early night
21:58While I saw me
21:59Molly rocking
22:00At the house of Billard
22:01Golly
22:02Miss
22:02Molly
22:03Love you
22:04Show
22:05Like
22:05Oh
22:06You're rocking
22:08And I'm rolling
22:09Hey
22:09I can't hear your mama call
22:11Meeting those people
22:13And having them on my TV show
22:15You know
22:16To sing a duet
22:16With
22:17Fat Storm
22:17Or Chuck Berry
22:18Elvis Presley
22:19Jerry Lee Lewis
22:20Wilson Pickett
22:21Ray Charles
22:23Aretha Franklin
22:24So I was able
22:25To do things on TV
22:27That you couldn't do on record
22:29And Little Richard was
22:32I mean tremendous
22:34To sing with him
22:38It was one of the highlights
22:39Of my life
22:40When people say to me
22:51Who would you like to sing with
22:52I say
22:53It all depends on the song
22:54You know
22:54How can we gel
22:55Together
22:56That we can compliment
22:59One another
22:59So there's got to be
23:02A marriage there
23:03If you ever need something
23:06That you never, ever, ever had
23:09And I know you never had
23:11Ooh
23:12Honey
23:12Don't you just sit there crying
23:14But you sit there feeling bad
23:17No, no, no
23:18You better get up
23:19And don't you understand
23:21And raise your hand
23:23I say
23:24Raise
23:25Your hand
23:27You know I'm standing above
23:30I want you to give me
23:33All your love
23:34So come on
23:37Open my heart
23:38Open up your heart
23:41Yeah
23:42Please let me try
23:44You better be good
23:46Baby, I understand
23:47No, no, no
23:49Raise your hand
23:51Oh, whatever you ever feel
23:54You're my woman, baby
23:55Honey, now don't you think you should
23:58I said I want you to give, give, give, give
24:02Give it to me one time
24:03But don't I know
24:04No, no, no
24:05You better be good
24:08Don't you
24:09On your day
24:10Janice Joplin
24:12She was this wild rock singer
24:15And didn't do variety shows
24:18So when she came on
24:20She said
24:20I'm only doing this for you
24:22She said
24:23I don't do variety shows
24:24But I love the way you sing
24:26And I said
24:26Well
24:26Likewise
24:28She wanted to be as raw as she could
24:33You know
24:34She rubbed off on me
24:35I mean
24:36She was
24:36So vibrant
24:38That I
24:39Went along with it
24:40It is what it is I suppose
25:10Sleigh bells ring
25:12Are you listening
25:15In the lane
25:18Snow is glistening
25:22A beautiful sight
25:27We're happy tonight
25:31Walking in a winter wonderland
25:36This was in the 70s
25:38And things
25:40I wasn't getting the hit records
25:42So what do you do?
25:46So then it was suggested
25:47To do some TV specials
25:50For the BBC
25:51Okay
25:52So one is in Switzerland
25:54You know
25:54One is in Barbados
25:56So we went to these locations
25:59And did songs
26:01Because Gordon Mills
26:02Thought it was a good idea
26:03But I wasn't particularly comfortable with it
26:06But I
26:07I didn't really have a choice
26:09Because again
26:10The ideas were not there
26:12And the songs
26:13See he wasn't writing
26:14He wasn't getting me hit songs
26:16He wasn't writing
26:17Them
26:17Himself
26:18And he wasn't finding them
26:20You know
26:21By other people
26:21Other people getting hits
26:22All through the disco era
26:24You know
26:26I didn't
26:26I didn't get one of those songs
26:29So I had to rely on
26:31On TV
26:32To keep me in the public eye
26:33And that's the only thing
26:35That was available
26:36Variety
26:37You don't get your own way
26:40All the time
26:41You know
26:42You've got to
26:42You've got to take the rough
26:44For the smooth
26:45But it again
26:46Was taking me
26:47Away from
26:48What I really
26:50Want to do musically
26:52You know
26:53It was sort of
26:54Fluff
26:54Fluffy
26:55As I told you
26:59The songs were not coming
27:00So my recording career
27:02Took a hit
27:04So I was concentrating
27:05On live shows
27:07And
27:08I think I might have become
27:10Larger than life
27:11You know
27:13You get caught up in it
27:14And
27:15Sometimes you
27:16You should take a
27:18Step back
27:19It's fantastic
27:21It's moving and singing
27:22Oh yeah
27:23Fancy
27:24Yeah
27:25Fancy
27:25Nice
27:26It's basically
27:27Because he's born
27:28He shakes the books
27:29About
27:29So
27:37Through the
27:37I would say
27:38Late 70s
27:39Early 80s
27:40I had lost my way
27:41For the fans
27:44As old and new
27:44It's a ritual
27:45No surprises
27:46And they like it that way
27:47They know exactly
27:49When to clap
27:49When to cry
27:50When to bring out
27:51Their hankers
27:52To mop the dampened brow
27:53And they know that in exchange
27:55A lucky few will always get a kiss
27:57By this time
27:58My son and my daughter-in-law
28:00Were my managers
28:01And made me aware
28:02You know
28:03Don't
28:03Don't pick up the underway
28:05If they're going to throw it at you
28:06Let it
28:07Land what it may
28:09But don't
28:10Don't make a big deal
28:11Out of it
28:11Because you
28:12You're belittling yourself
28:14You're cheapening
28:16Your talent
28:17And they were right
28:22And I was wrong
28:24Tom Jones Enterprises
28:27Yes who's calling please
28:29Okay
28:32Sure hold on
28:33Hello
28:35Sandy
28:36My son and my daughter-in-law
28:38Took over
28:39As managers
28:41And then that
28:42Give it a
28:42You know
28:43A kickstart
28:43Again
28:44Not the way
28:45We like to be
28:47Represented
28:48Because it really
28:49Is that kind of an act at all
28:51Also this
28:51The sentence that says
28:52Intense emotional
28:54Gyrating
28:55Rhythm and blues
28:56Act
28:56I think we'd kind of
28:58Lose the gyrating
28:59If you don't mind
28:59I always had a strong opinion
29:01That some things were just
29:02Wrong
29:03In an ideal world
29:05The focus
29:05Of his image
29:06Will shift
29:08About three feet upwards
29:09And last always
29:11With his voice
29:11And nothing else
29:12Like I thought
29:14At the beginning
29:15That I needed a song
29:16Before I did
29:17It's not unusual
29:18I was waiting
29:20For the song again
29:21And it was Kiss
29:23And I felt that
29:25My voice was
29:26Still there
29:27Strong enough to do it
29:28If I could get
29:29The right song
29:30But it took the art of noise
29:31To make it
29:32New
29:33So I did a track
29:35Just the voice
29:36And then they did
29:37The arrangement
29:38And that's what did it
29:40You know
29:41The explosion
29:41When I heard that
29:42You don't have
29:44And I thought
29:45That's it
29:46This sounds like
29:47A hit to me
29:48To turn me on
29:49I just need
29:53Your body
29:54Baby
29:54I'm just
29:57You don't
29:58You don't need
30:01Experience
30:02To turn me out
30:06A new sound
30:07You know
30:08That sound is different
30:09I hadn't recorded
30:10With a sound like that
30:11Before
30:11I'll show you
30:12What it's all about
30:14It was like
30:15Starting over
30:16You know
30:16I thought
30:16It's like
30:17A new start
30:18Getting back in the charts
30:21Getting a hit record
30:22And I felt it
30:24Without even opening my shirt
30:34Without even opening my shirt
30:34Once we had a hit with Kiss
30:42I knew that that was a new beginning
30:45This year
30:48For once
30:49The main talking point
30:50Was the music
30:51And this was the man
30:53They were all talking about
30:54Tom Jones
30:58Was to many
30:59A surprise choice
31:00For Pilton
31:00Playing his first ever
31:02Festival
31:02At an age
31:03Where his grandchildren
31:04Were among the audience
31:05So why did he come
31:07Because they asked me to come
31:09They called and said
31:10That they would like me
31:11To be here
31:12So I said fine
31:14I mean that's
31:15That's all I need
31:15Is an invitation
31:16So and I'm here
31:18Somebody said
31:19Tom Jones
31:19At the Glastonbury Festival
31:21They're trying to make it respectable
31:22Well I heard that the other day
31:24They said
31:25Middle age respectability
31:26Middle age yet
31:27But I don't know
31:28About respectable
31:29Well
31:30I suppose I am respectable
31:34No I mean
31:34Hopefully I've become respectable
31:40When they asked me
31:47To close the event
31:48The surprise
31:49Guest
31:51I thought we'll go on there
31:53And do like a soulful
31:54Show
31:55But the result
31:57Was unbelievable
31:58I'm still here
32:02You know that's how you feel
32:03You know I'm still here
32:05I'm still doing it
32:06I'm still loving it
32:07And thank God
32:08The people
32:09Still love me doing it
32:12So you can't
32:13You can't ask for more than that
32:14Thank you very much
32:17What do you think of him then?
32:19Oh I think he's brilliant
32:20I didn't realise he had so much
32:22So much magnitude
32:23How was it HGV News
32:26How was it up there?
32:27Wonderful
32:27What were the crowd like?
32:29Great
32:30What do you think of the whole
32:31The Glastonbury Festival?
32:32I think it's wonderful
32:32Thank you
32:33Mark said to me
32:36Well look there's a lot of young groups out there
32:38That you could work with
32:39If you fancy it
32:41I said sure why not
32:42So why does the most famous grandfather in pop
32:48Still want to make records?
32:50Because I love singing
32:51And I want to compete
32:52I don't want people to say
32:54Oh Tom Jones made
32:55Great sounding records in the 60s
32:58I want him to say
32:59You know
33:00He makes
33:00Great sounding records
33:02Open out the window
33:04Let some air to this room
33:06I think mama's choking
33:08From the smell of stair perfume
33:10And the cigarette you're sloping
33:12About to scare me half to death
33:14Open up the window
33:15Let me catch my breath
33:17Mama told me about to come
33:19I knew that there were some Welsh bands coming up
33:23Which I wanted to do
33:24So Stereophonics
33:26You know
33:27And Catatonia
33:28With Keres Matthews
33:30And Manic Street Preachers
33:31So I wanted those three
33:33For definitely
33:34The cardigans were
33:43Were suggested
33:44It did what we wanted it to do
34:03To work with
34:04You know
34:04Young people
34:05With stuff that they wanted to do
34:07I asked every one of them
34:09What would you like to do?
34:11And we'll do it
34:12It's not a gimmicky thing
34:16We're not doing it just for effect
34:18It's real
34:19We all had a great time
34:29And everything was so natural
34:31The singer Tom Jones has been knighted at Buckingham Palace for services to music
34:41The 65-year-old minor son said accepting the knighthood was a great and a humbling honour
34:47Sir Thomas Woodward
34:49Known as Tom Jones for services to music
34:53Knighthood was something that I never dreamt of
34:57You know
34:58You know
34:58I mean I've always been a royalist ever since I was a child
35:01Because I've always been interested in British history
35:03And it was a special moment
35:05I'll never forget that
35:07Because she was so lovely
35:09And then meeting her afterwards
35:13And then many more through the years
35:16And it's
35:17It was tremendous
35:19This one tops it all
35:20I mean the knighthood is
35:21It's fantastic
35:22It's
35:23It's
35:25It's
35:25It's just different
35:26That's the biggest thing that's ever
35:28Happened to me
35:30Because
35:30When I was a kid
35:32You know
35:32I wanted to make hit records
35:34I wanted to get
35:35I wanted to become a professional singer
35:38And do television shows
35:40And you know
35:41Like that
35:41That's what you think
35:42When you're a child
35:43But to be knighted
35:45I never
35:46If somebody had told me when I was a kid
35:48You know
35:49Would you ever think about being knight
35:51I mean
35:52Please
35:53But let's now welcome a great legend indeed
35:56The wonderful
35:57Sir Tom Jones
35:582009
36:01You stopped dying your hair
36:03Yes
36:04Was that just an instant decision for you
36:06Er
36:07Yes
36:07I was doing a later show
36:09Jules Holland
36:10And I saw the clip of it
36:12Afterwards
36:13And I thought
36:14My God
36:15My hair
36:15It looks dyed
36:17And it looked permed
36:19Your captivating eyes
36:22The clever way they smile
36:24Stops him in his tracks
36:26And people were saying
36:28Tom Jones with his dyed permed hair
36:30Well it wasn't permed
36:32But the dye made it look more like that
36:35They've broken the mold
36:38This is not working
36:40It looks false
36:42And I don't want to be false
36:44When you're standing there
36:47The world disappears
36:51It would be
36:52I was in Florida
36:53And I was about to dye my hair
36:56And I'm looking at it in the mirror
36:58And I'm thinking
36:58I think I'll let it go
37:00You're a cut above the rest
37:03He'd be such a fool
37:05If he should ever leave you
37:09Nobody complained
37:09Everybody said
37:11Your hair looks great
37:11So thank you very much
37:14You can't try to be
37:19A younger person
37:20And I don't
37:22You know
37:22I wouldn't want to
37:23And I think people see that
37:25That I'm not
37:26You know
37:26Younger people have said
37:27You are you
37:28You're being you
37:29You're not trying to be
37:31And I think they'll see through you
37:33In a minute
37:34If you're false
37:35This is it
37:40That's that riff
37:41We had a lot of songs
37:47On the table
37:48To choose from
37:49When we were cutting this record
37:50The ones that stuck
37:53Were the ones that
37:53Had an emotional resonance
37:55For him
37:55Everything that we chose
37:56And everything that's on the record
37:58Is part of
37:59The song's about something
38:00That means something
38:01To him right now
38:02When I first met Ethan
38:04And I said
38:05How are we going to do this
38:06I told him what kind of
38:07Thing that I wanted to do
38:08I realised that
38:09When I got in the studio
38:10With him
38:10He knew what kind of
38:12Thing he wanted
38:12He wanted it to be
38:13As real
38:14As I wanted it to be
38:16He said
38:18I hear things in your voice
38:19That haven't been recorded yet
38:21And he said
38:24I think you should be
38:25You know
38:25Stripped down musically
38:26You've always had
38:27Big arrangements
38:28And he said
38:30We could go into the studio
38:31With just a few instruments
38:34I want to hear your voice
38:36If I die
38:38And my soul belongs
38:42I thought we were rehearsing
38:44The microphone was there
38:45And he said
38:47That's what I want
38:48I want you naturally
38:50I don't want you to perform
38:51You know
38:53Like if you're singing to yourself
38:54Like you just were now
38:55It was a more natural way
38:58Of recording
38:59With Ethan
39:00Than when I started with Decca
39:02And the experience of life
39:04You see
39:04Hopefully
39:05It will show
39:06In your delivery
39:08Of a song
39:08And I think it does
39:10When I listen to stuff
39:12That I recorded years ago
39:13Sometimes I think
39:15I didn't really understand
39:16That song
39:17And it shows
39:18But now
39:20I understand more
39:21About the
39:23The content
39:24Of the song
39:26Like the Bob Dylan song
39:27What good am I
39:28It's
39:30I was thinking of my wife
39:32You know
39:32Because she got ill
39:34You know
39:35With cancer
39:35I recorded it before
39:36She got ill
39:38But she was in my mind
39:39When I was recording it
39:42Because she had started
39:43To
39:44Health wasn't good
39:46And her mental
39:48She wasn't in a good place
39:50And
39:51And this
39:51And I felt
39:53Partly responsible for it
39:55So it's like
39:56What good am I
39:57If I'm like all the rest
39:58You know
39:59If I just turn away
40:00When I see how you're dressed
40:02Because she'd lost it
40:03You know
40:04So that was on my mind
40:06When I recorded it
40:06And then when she passed away
40:09I said
40:10Linda
40:10I don't think I'll
40:11Be able to
40:12Carry on
40:12And she said
40:13You must carry on
40:14That's what you do
40:16You know
40:17You're a singer
40:17You've got to carry on
40:19Don't let this
40:20Destroy you
40:22What good am I
40:26If I know and don't do
40:30If I see and don't say
40:36If I look straight through you
40:40And I turn it deafly
40:45To the thundering sky
40:49To the thundering sky
40:50What good am I
41:00What good am I
41:06While you saw the blue
41:09And I hear in my head
41:16What you say in your sleep
41:20And I freeze in the moment
41:26Like the rest who don't try
41:30To the thundering sky
41:33What good am I
41:39What good am I then
41:43To the others than me
41:49What good am I then
41:55To the others than me
41:59When I've had every chance
42:03But still fail to see
42:07If my hands tied must I
42:11Not wonder within
42:14Who tied them in white
42:18And where must I have been
42:23What good am I
42:29If I say foolish things
42:33And I laugh in the face
42:40Of what sorrow brings
42:43And I just turn my back
42:47And I just turn my back
42:49While you silently die
42:54What good am I
43:03What good am I
43:14What good am I
43:24I think
43:53Why a lot of singers
43:55Get their heads in the cloud
43:57A little bit
43:57Because they
43:59They forget what they were
44:01Before
44:01They were
44:03Pop singers
44:05I will never forget this
44:12I will always remember
44:13As long as I live
44:14What it's like
44:15To work hard
44:17When I was young
44:20I didn't have that much
44:21And I think you learn
44:25To realize
44:26More about life
44:27When you don't have
44:28That much
44:29When you're a child
44:30I think you
44:31You grow up faster
44:31You come face to face
44:33With reality
44:34Much quicker
44:34Singing is my life
44:40And that's what I
44:42Will always do
44:43Is to sing
44:45Because I haven't got
44:46Any interest in anything else
44:47I've never seen that clip before
44:58That's the first time for me
45:01To see that
45:01That's great
45:03Any regrets
45:06Along the way
45:08Not really
45:09No big ones
45:10I've achieved
45:12What I wanted to
45:14You know
45:14I wanted to be
45:15A professional singer
45:16And I've done that
45:18And I'm still doing it
45:20And I'm still loving it
45:21So it's
45:23It's been a
45:24It's been a godsend
45:25You know
45:26That I've done
45:28What I wanted to do
45:29It's a wonderful feeling
45:32And I'll see you next time
46:02I'll see you next time
