00:00He is absence he's gonna take his seat alongside Sean Maloney as they are the
00:05interim pair they're gonna take charge of everything for the club after Brendan
00:10Rogers of course resigned yesterday let's dip into this now and hear what
00:14Martin O'Neill has got to say just a warning there may be flash photography in this live news conference
00:21oh right okay well I knew about it about less than 24 hours ago so really excited must admit nervous
00:32excitement about it and obviously want to try and do as well as I can yeah but yeah looking forward
00:41to it I think I am so it is it is a role at this minute which is they're looking for a
00:50permanent manager I think this obviously the events of the last 24 hours are quite stunning and at this
00:59minute I've been called in to to do the job interim manager at this minute and and that's the way
01:06it'll remain could you tell us maybe how this came about in the last 24 hours and what you have been
01:11told about what's required from this management team at the moment well I didn't need to be told
01:18about what's required about management teams at this football club but yeah I got a call must have
01:24been late afternoon early evening from from Dermot Desmond and he said that Brendan had resigned and
01:33I think people were taken aback by that obviously I hadn't they hadn't I assumed that that nothing would
01:43have happened until the end of the season for anybody in particular but yeah so I was called
01:49would I would I come in and and hold proceedings until they got a permanent manager and I had 10
01:58minutes to make up my mind apparently you know which I did you mentioned Dermot Desmond there was some
02:05very strong words from him about Brendan's departure I wonder what you make of that and how big a job you
02:11guys have of uniting everyone at this moment in time well I I can't really comment on that you know
02:17that's that's something that's outside my outside my remit in that sense yeah I mean what has happened
02:26just recently Celtic have been so successful for a long long time now and each manager that steps into
02:33the job does brilliantly Brendan has done terrifically well in the in both times he's been here at the
02:39football club and I also have a number of managers before and so it's from that viewpoint I don't I
02:48don't know I don't know what has happened in that sense and it's probably not for me to make a judgment
02:54here at this stage so all I know is that I'm in here now at the minute and working with Sean I knew
03:01Sean as a player a young player here and terrific footballer he was however so we'll try and work
03:08together and and see what so you obviously see what that brings but winning is the most important
03:14thing as I've I've said often enough when I do little bits of punditry still applies to me now
03:20just man what do you think this club needs at the moment well naturally I think there's
03:30I think it's the easiest thing in the world to say that when a club is successful it has it has
03:38everybody going in the same direction that doesn't seem to be the case at this moment so really that
03:45that's that's that's it whether whether I'm able to do that or not is in the lap of the gods
03:50but I think winning football matches has always been the main I was the main contributor to uh to
03:57fans and uh and the club being together so that would be that would be it winning football matches
04:05you obviously know Dermott and you know Brendan from a personal point of view has it been sad or
04:11disappointed to see how publicly their relationship seems to have just collapsed yeah it is I must
04:19admit that that that that's true it is um it is really sad to see that I am I obviously I wasn't
04:26expecting it I do I I don't know what has been going on because despite the fact that Dermott brought
04:31me here to the football club 25 years ago I since I left I have not had that many conversations with
04:39them I've never been asked back again you know in younger days so um so all of that there is it is
04:46as you say it is quite sad to see but uh and I don't know what's taking place so it's very little
04:53there or there is very little that I can I can add to it and just confirming this is only for you on an
05:00interim basis I know we had quote sell there from you on a radio station but do you feel this is just
05:04an interim period for you and you do not want this job full time I will number one yes um I this is
05:11definitely an interim you know there there could be have a new manager in two weeks time and we don't
05:16win um on uh on Wednesday evening we might have a new manager on Thursday so um um so I don't know
05:24that and that's not great news for Sean to hear because he was hoping I'd be around for a month
05:29and um so that's it yeah absolutely and um Celtic will be looking for uh a young manager to come in
05:38with a very very decent CV and uh and to work with the team so that that that's exactly right
05:44can I ask you Sean as well you've obviously in your previous role at the club worked very closely
05:48with Brendan yeah can I ask your thoughts on Brendan on his character on his style and the general
05:55atmosphere and around the club before his departure in terms of him as a guy in my relationship
06:01um just really positive um he gave me my first coaching job seven eight years ago so extremely
06:08grateful to him for that stayed in contact with him as uh as I had different jobs and um been back
06:15here for the last three or four months it picked up pretty much exactly where it was um my experience
06:19of him as a brilliant guy brilliant coach extremely successful here um and the feeling in the training
06:25grounds was um as you'd imagine look some sometimes after results uh the training grounds lower than
06:32others but that's pretty normal in every football club um yeah the training ground was good obviously
06:37uh today was difficult as you'd expect um yeah it's a it was a turbulent day traumatic day really
06:45for everyone uh not just at the stadium but the training ground so um as expected yeah it was a
06:51tough morning just finally for me you you worked with the players this morning at Lennox and if they
06:55took two innings that correct yeah what do you feel that the players need right now and how is their
07:00mentality and resolve after what's been a bruising couple of weeks for the team and then a sucker punch
07:06last night yeah so if you take away the sort of previous two weeks obviously um i was in a very
07:11different role i think uh just today as best as i could and the other staff um after speaking with
07:18martin it was just really trying to bring them stability a little bit of normality in terms of
07:24preparations for the game and yeah look it's really difficult you the club have lost um some brilliant
07:31people okay we're just going to take a very quick break we'll go back to celtic park and hear more

12:31welcome back to sports desk martin o'neill is back at celtic park up to 20 years away he's currently
12:49holding his first news conference as interim manager alongside his assistant interim manager sean maloney
12:55uh let's get back there they've just been asked what they think the dynamic will be in their new
13:00management team a warning there may be flash photography in this news conference
13:08well if this had been let's say 20 odd years ago i would have been definitely dishing out all the
13:14instructions but since this young man has been a manager since i'm a wee bit uh i'd have to be careful
13:20what i say to him and i think that he might be actually giving me instructions but um it's nice
13:27to see him he keeps me young i must admit and uh yeah and it's nice because i have no i took him to
13:34aston villa when i went to aston villa and then he claimed he was homesick and came back to celtic
13:40again i've never really forgiven him for that so um and this is the first time that we've well other than
13:47your time when you were working at belgium first time we've really met up so um yeah i've got a lot
13:52to say to him now when this finishes and it won't be positive you know martin can i just go back to
13:59obviously it was quite public what happened between dermot and brendan did that give you any reservations
14:04about coming back to the club and saying yes to this opportunity no it doesn't because i'm i'm not going
14:10to be i do you know if there's such a thing as enjoying it and i sometimes even wondered
14:16throughout my career whether i ever really really enjoyed it and i'm probably too miserable
14:21to enjoy it but i'm i know at this ripe old age i'm going to try and enjoy it but the only way i
14:27will do the only way i've ever lived it is really by trying to win football matches so from that
14:32viewpoint i had no well i said no hesitation i was given only 10 minutes to make my mind up and so i had
14:41to do it in that time so i'm i'm i'm fine with it um but i would have i would have no problem i i go
14:48back to someone who actually gave me the job in the first place way back 25 years ago when in all
14:54honesty yeah at that stage there were a lot of big big names for bigger names than myself in for that
14:59job and uh and so i you know it was a real honor to manage the football club and uh so from that viewpoint
15:07i i'm i'm fine as i said to you that i'm uh intermittently would keep in touch with dermot
15:14but it would never be anything anything like this and as i said to you all the times that they've
15:19that they've changed managers he's never asked me you know so but why would he then because they've
15:25kept winning you know so it doesn't really make any difference so that's it other than uh giving
15:30maloney a bit of a rollick in later on i'm fine man what's your what's going through your mind when
15:36you think about going out there back in that dugout uh tomorrow but yeah genuinely a nervous
15:42excitement about it you know idea but i was always a bit nervous about matches anyway and um so excited
15:50by it um obviously want to try and win uh the game which is the most important thing and um you know i
15:58if if if there is if there is um um some sort of um uh clapping for me that that i'm well aware in
16:08this game that lasts about 15 minutes so at the end of the day you have to win and that's that's what
16:12we have to do celtic has always had that dna for want of better words you know they have to win
16:19can i just ask obviously we heard a wee bit of your thoughts on the the league and celtic yesterday on
16:26the radio coincidentally before you got the phone call you feel that maybe getting a bit more
16:31physicality into the team that was your teams were always had that that is that something you're going
16:36well and that's that's that's that's true that's first of all i stand by everything i said yesterday
16:42although if i'd known i was going to get the job here i wouldn't have said anything
16:46um but that's the nature of the game so there i was minding my own business in the king's road
16:51uh in london and then i get the call so now i thought should i have said that yeah anyway
16:57no but i stand by it it's really hearts are very strong they're going brilliantly at this minute
17:01they've opened up an eight point gap and um and celtic it's something that i have i've thought about
17:09for quite some considerable time now there's different ways of playing the game i had a i had
17:15obviously i inherited myself way back 25 years ago some really great players and i think
17:20that in terms of adding to that there i think that um um i i think i did that and and eventually over
17:28over a you know relatively short period of time the team gelled and got together and we were very strong
17:35and i had lots of good players and and other than a couple of you very young lads in the side you know
17:40proper men in this team the celtic i've noticed here in the last couple of years have not got that but
17:44they've still been able to win so they've been able to win in a different way which is great i just that
17:49that that was my viewpoint i may end up after two or three weeks changing my mind completely about it
17:55but uh that was that has been my view for some time but remember it's only it's it's what is it
18:03it's about nine months ago that i saw this side going to and it was there in munich when this side did
18:10brilliantly and uh by your munich scored in the last minute of the game and i genuinely believe
18:15if that had gone into extra time that celtic would have beaten them so that's you know so there's
18:21there are a number of ways to win football matches with big games coming up straight away
18:27you've not got much time but what do you think you need to do tactically to get celtic back scoring
18:31goals because we've really struggled a lot this season yeah well they have you're really and it's um
18:39it's the number of uh chances you create during the uh during the course of a game it's the most
18:43important thing because you're not going to stick everything away and um that that is it we have
18:49to try and create we can and um i mean for instance there was a moment in the game that celtic could
18:55have gone to one in front against hearts good chance a goalkeeper makes a great save in the game
19:01so i think overall um from what i see and sean may totally disagree with me it's it's it's creating more
19:10chances uh for us uh how we do that there is entirely up to us martin you said there you were
19:16in munich for that a fantastic performance back in february a lot of the squad that played in that
19:23game are still at the club do you think celtic can reach those levels again pretty quickly either
19:27under yourself and sean or the the permanent boss whenever they are appointed well they have a couple
19:33of injuries at the moment to very very key players every football club has key players but
19:37the team are a good side they're a good team they're a good side might just have you know not
19:42used to losing some football matches so maybe a little bit of confidence has been lost from that
19:46but the players are really really decent players and i'm really i'm genuinely looking forward to working
19:52with them for how long that may be i don't know but uh yeah and that would be that would be your
19:58ambition to try and get to get the football club back to that there again and uh and we will we
20:05we will strive as hard as we can to do it and that's um i think that would be the message from
20:10both of us but um really that that's it we have some really fine footballers at the football club
20:16and players who have won who have won and that's nice you know it's nice to go into a dressing room
20:22where players who have actually won i'm not saying all of them have done that there was a couple of
20:26young lads on the side but they're boys who and they know how to win so they just get that back again
20:31and that would be the most important message for me welcome back martin oh thank you you weren't
20:38around when i was i know i was i was outside those doors uh when you walked in in 2000 were you yeah
20:44i was no i thought you wouldn't have been born some of uh your your greatest uh memories and for fans
20:51back then was the the victories over rangers they've got the small matter obviously of the the derby at the
20:57the weekend how excited are you both for that and obviously it's such a huge uh game in glasgow you
21:03know how important that is to fans are you confident that you can lift the spirits within the camp to to
21:08get us up for that well if you had ever been in the um uh in the room here at this time you would have
21:15known my answer to that would have been i cannot possibly think about that game we've got a game
21:20tomorrow night which is the most important thing for me the most important thing so after that there
21:26i could have a conversation with it but you know as i said to you if uh if we don't uh get a result
21:32tomorrow night you might be talking to somebody else on saturday
21:39you've added um mark fatheringham to your backroom team can we just get your thinking behind that
21:43uh mark i i have no idea to tell you the truth why i've had it mark because he's just um he's just
21:50a botheration to the i met him um he was that as a player i'm i'm only kidding yeah only two you looked
21:59at me as if to say what are you talking about fuzzy i'll can i call him fuzzy i never liked these nicknames
22:05but i that's all i've ever known him as fuzzy was um uh i i thought really good lad had um
22:13super super self-confidence about himself you know if he did a tenth of the ability that his
22:19confidence suggested and he would have been messy but um great lad like him really i met him um i met
22:27him um but i say about six or seven weeks ago by chance i was at a league managers association meeting
22:34and he was there and on it was really nice to meet him i must admit so i haven't had a chance to see him
22:39um i'm surprised i haven't heard him but uh he'll he'll be fine fuzzy will be fine you know he just
22:46needs uh he just needs um um just sorting out a little bit he'll be absolutely fine but what he's
22:53done when he was at swansea it was uh yeah no ford's the um he's had a brilliant sort of coaching
22:59career really um uh with felix magath um out in germany did uh brilliant work at hartha um and then he
23:07he did really well with swansea last year so um completely different character to the rest of the
23:13coaches um yeah so he will you agree with me about him i by the way just i love him i do love him i
23:21love fuzzy always have done yeah no he's uh he's a different character so he'll uh he brings his own
23:28skill set but he's a he's he was a good lad uh i think all the staff it was like this morning is uh
23:34uh yeah to pick the the group up and not just the players you need people like fuzzy um around in
23:40that sort of energy so look forward to working with him yeah and just for both of you if you get any
23:45words for john kennedy who's also the part of the club after many years of service well i've john was
23:53just a young kid coming into the team when i was at uh at celty and he had um he played two games
23:59excuse me he played um he played um rangers and barcelona and then got that really bad injury at uh
24:08when he was playing for scotland so his career was really cut short as a as a player and um and i
24:14again um he's he's been part of celtic now for quite some considerable time so i again obviously i wish
24:23him well i haven't had a chance to speak to him but um uh so the those sort of changes have taken
24:29place before i came in hi martin you mentioned that your role here as interim manager is very
24:34much a temporary thing once that finishes whenever that may be do you think you'll remain at the club
24:39in any sort of capacity i i that's never been discussed and i'm quite sure no i'll just
24:46go into the sunset and disappear again you know i think so i wouldn't i wouldn't imagine that that's
24:52the case and um no my job is here to try and um i suppose if spirits are low then part of my job is
25:00to do that to lift it and i think in all honesty i will get myself i will get a lift from from the
25:06team itself but i yeah that's not been discussed and i wouldn't imagine it you know sean you've
25:12mentioned it was a tough day at the next time this morning who are the leaders in the dressing room
25:16who are the guys that you need to get on board with just now to to take things forward between the
25:21the group yourself and martin i've got some experienced guys uh obviously casper's probably
25:25the most experienced uh but in terms of the lads that probably come through the club you've got
25:31callum james kieran um relied heavily on them this morning also johnson's a really big part of the
25:36group unfortunately cameron um he had surgery yesterday i think or he would have been part of
25:41that so that there's a there's enough experience enough guys that have won um enough guys probably
25:47they've experienced days like today that uh yeah they were uh relied heavily on them this morning
25:53and we'll rely heavily on them tomorrow night yeah um yeah these these moments are really really
25:57difficult i think uh as well when you when you ask the question about john i think uh he's a big part
26:03of of what goes on on a daily basis he's really extremely talented coach very popular um so yeah he'll be
26:10missed um but it's the senior players um that will be relied upon and demanded more i think it's
26:18always the case um and it won't be any different tomorrow night yeah just a last question for martin
26:24martin there's a a line in your book i think it's the very last line in your book where you talk about
26:28football as a a lifelong addiction for you that you've been unable to shake off is that what brings
26:32you here at this late stage in your career i think you're i think that's absolutely right i think that
26:38that that that would be it yes it it has been an addiction and you can't shake it off when i was
26:44putting that last line in it i didn't think that this would materialize and uh so yeah i am i i
26:53interestingly i know i know it's almost like uh 24 hours since i since i spoke to term but it is
26:59a bit surreal for me really at this minute you can see you know lights shining and then i think oh you
27:05know what have i done and um no really excited by it genuinely excited by it and um i would um
27:16really looking forward to it immensely but you're right it's it's it is a bit of an addiction
27:21and but i'm i'm i'm not sure that you know kind of semi enjoying doing a you know um bit of pundit
27:30your work which is ridiculously easy when you can sit in a chair and criticize everybody else but
27:36yourself and uh i think that um yeah i'm not so sure that i would come out for um many other clubs
27:44you know welcome back martin good to see you sean um there's been a lot made in the last couple of
27:51days especially over the last month or so about the club's transfer policy and you know everything
27:55that goes around that as part of the interim appointment of the the two of yourselves a little
28:00bit of player evaluation as well as maybe assisting the club with any recruitment that is going on in
28:04the background since the summer window closed from my point of view no uh i think um similar to martin
28:11i think last 24 hours has been a bit of a whirlwind it was literally um after speaking with martin about
28:17what he wanted from me um which was really really easy to say yes to uh for what this this man's done
28:26for me and my family um in terms of the the other parts of the club now i think that's uh that's maybe
28:33for another day yeah last question for me is um obviously there's no time you know it's tomorrow
28:39matt tomorrow we've got a match straight away sean you've been very very close to the team in the club
28:43in recent months martin maybe a bit further away yeah the main thing we've been missing is like
28:48creating chances and scoring goals can we expect tomorrow night to see any sort of like tweak or
28:53change to approach from what we've seen in recent weeks or will tomorrow just be a matter of setting
28:57the ship first and foremost do you think i i think that's a very good point i i will i will obviously
29:03rely on this young man beside me here uh as much as anything else who would know the players far better
29:08than myself it's all right watching players from a distance and you may knock your mind about something
29:13and you find then that when you arrive at football club and i've done this before right i've got a
29:17totally different uh viewpoint from from a player and um so i will be relying on this young man but um
29:24i think that i think that um the very natural things that you want you want to have possession you
29:31want to be able to try and create chances it's up to us to try and uh and do that and just try and enforce
29:37or uh try and force your i suppose your presence your personality on on the on the game itself which
29:44will not be easy for us
29:52hi martin sean welcome back to celtic it was just a quick question and will you have any involvement in
29:58the process of recommending and the next manager to eh dermot and the rest of the board for for me
30:05would you have any do you have any input on well years ago you know i'm such a big ego that i would have
30:12said yeah you're going to recommend this i would have no input at all and um is there anybody in this
30:20audience that is remotely close to my age you know so young man you look about 12 you know it's just
30:27nice nice to know you know so that's a compliment by the way you know brilliant brilliant but uh no i
30:33i wouldn't have i i wouldn't um it'd be an interesting one i suppose one of the questions you might think
30:39is that if there's going to be recruitment on um in january time which you you know imagine that there's
30:46something like that would take place then um who knows what would happen but i i assume that um
30:53that you'd want you know if you're going to have a manager and maybe by that time then that he he
30:59himself whoever may that may be would have uh an input into who would be coming to the football club
