00:00OpenAI and NVIDIA plan massive AI data centers.
00:04OpenAI and NVIDIA just dropped a megawatt-sized bombshell.
00:08The two tech heavyweights are teaming up to build AI data centers so massive they could
00:12light up entire countries.
00:14Earlier this week, OpenAI announced a strategic partnership with NVIDIA to deploy up to 10
00:19gigawatts of AI computing power.
00:22For context, that's more electricity than Switzerland or Portugal uses at peak demand.
00:27According to Fortune, NVIDIA is ready to sink as much as $100 billion into this infrastructure
00:32spree.
00:33Add in projects tied to President Donald Trump's half-trillion-dollar Stargate initiative, another
00:397 gigawatts of capacity, and we're talking power consumption on the scale of New York
00:43City plus San Diego during a heatwave.
00:46Cornell engineering professor Feng Ki-Yu summed it up bluntly, 17 gigawatts is like powering
00:52both countries together.
00:54OpenAI and Oracle already run a gargantuan Stargate data center in Abilene, Texas, guzzling
00:58enough electricity to supply half a million homes.
01:02The five new Stargate projects could push the total load to a level that University of
01:06Chicago computer scientist Andrew Cheen warns might drive computing to 10 to 12 percent of
01:12global power demand by 2030.
01:14We're coming to some seminal moments for how we think about AI and its impact on society,
01:19he told Fortune.
01:21Everything starts with compute, he said, framing the partnership as the backbone of the future
01:25economy.
01:27But there's a catch big enough to fry a transformer, the environmental bill.
01:31These megadata centers require colossal amounts of water for cooling and will crank up carbon
01:36emissions unless renewables, nuclear power, or a miracle energy breakthrough swoops in.
01:41Tech companies have already admitted they're missing their own climate goals.
01:45They told us these data centers were going to be clean and green, Cheen said.
01:49But in the face of AI growth, I don't think they can be.
01:53The AI revolution may be electric, but it's anything but free.
