00:00Open AI may transform ChatGPT into an operating system.
00:05When Nick Turley joined Open AI in 2022, he wasn't just signing up to run ChatGPT.
00:11He was signing up to turn a science experiment into a business.
00:15Three years later, with 800 million people chatting weekly, he's ready for the sequel,
00:20transforming ChatGPT into something that looks a lot like an operating system,
00:24one filled with third-party apps.
00:27At Open AI's developer conference in Fort Mason, San Francisco,
00:31Turley sat down to explain his big plan.
00:33He envisions ChatGPT evolving the way web browsers did,
00:37from a humble window for websites into the central hub for digital life.
00:41Most of what we do now happens in the browser, he says.
00:44Why not in ChatGPT?
00:46The vision is bold, a world where ChatGPT isn't just a chat box,
00:51but the digital layer you use to do everything,
00:53from ordering takeout, to booking travel, to writing code.
00:57Open AI's even rumored to be working on a browser of its own
01:00and some mystery hardware with ex-Apple designer Joni Ive.
01:03If you squint, you can almost see a ChatGPT-powered ecosystem taking shape, Siri,
01:08but with a PhD.
01:10This isn't Open AI's first swing at the AI app store idea.
01:14Plugins in the GPT store debuted in 2023, but fizzled.
01:19Turley says this time's different.
01:21Apps will live inside ChatGPT's core experience, not off in some forgotten tab.
01:27For developers, that means direct access to ChatGPT's enormous user base,
01:32and for Open AI, a potential goldmine as apps like Uber or DoorDash
01:36generate transactions within the chat itself.
01:39Of course, running an AI OS comes with headaches.
01:41Who gets top billing when both DoorDash and Instacart want to deliver your snacks?
01:46Will companies pay for better placement?
01:49Turley says Open AI is still figuring it out slowly.
01:52But beneath the business talk,
01:54Turley insists ChatGPT isn't drifting from Open AI's lofty mission
01:58to benefit all of humanity.
02:00Instead, he calls it the delivery vehicle for AGI,
02:03artificial general intelligence,
02:05and points to stories like the 89-year-old
02:07who learned to code with ChatGPT.
02:10It's the future of computing with a side of fries.
