00:00Mississippi College basketball team will get paid to lose 11 of its first 12 games of the season.
00:06Alcorn State might have the hardest non-conference schedule in college basketball.
00:11The Braves will get paid to lose at least 11 of their first 12 games.
00:16There is no way to predict the outcome of a college basketball game before it happens,
00:19but the odds are stacked against one of the worst teams in the country from a year ago.
00:23They don't have a choice.
00:25Alcorn State finished as the No. 330 team in the net rankings last season.
00:31Net rating measures a team's point differential per 100 possessions,
00:35calculated by subtracting the team's defensive rating, points allowed per 100 possessions,
00:39from its offensive rating, points scored per 100 possessions.
00:43There are currently 361 schools that are full members of a Division I basketball conference,
00:49plus four additional programs that are in transition from NCAA Division II.
00:54The Braves finished in the 92nd percentile, essentially 31st from last.
00:59They went 11-20 overall.
01:01This is not a knock on a program that is trying its best.
01:04It is hard to recruit to a town in Mississippi with a total population of approximately 1,000.
01:09It is even harder to compete with such few resources.
01:13Rather, this is just to point out the struggles of the Alcorn State team in recent years.
01:17The Braves lost their first 14 games of the year in 2024, and 2025 doesn't look much better.
01:25Alcorn State will begin this upcoming season with at least 11 losses.
01:29It will also play its first 15 games on the road.
01:32Oof.
01:33There may not be a more difficult 12-game stretch in the entire country.
01:370-12 is very much in play.
01:400-15 seems likely based on last year's results.
01:42This is the unfortunate reality for a school like Alcorn State.
01:47All of these big-name programs pay these smaller teams to lose.
01:51These first 12 games of the season will effectively serve as the funding for the program for the entire year.
01:56They don't have a choice but to play those games.
01:59Man, people really think we'd choose these schedules,
02:03Grambling State head coach Patrick Crary said recently.
02:06Wouldn't it be great if the Braves could pull an upset or two?
02:10They won't, but what if?
