00:00Schools rebel after Superintendent orders moment of silence for Kirk.
00:05An Oklahoma father has spoken out against a directive from the state's top education
00:09official that asked schools to hold a statewide moment of silence to honor conservative activist
00:14Charlie Kirk.
00:15Kirk, founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, was killed on September
00:2010th during a campus event at Utah Valley.
00:23In a letter to parents, State Superintendent Ryan Walters asked schools to pause at noon
00:27on September 16th to honor Kirk's legacy, praising him as someone who empowered the
00:31next generation with courage and conviction.
00:34The father described the plan as a violation of his family's rights and said he refused
00:39to allow his son to participate.
00:41Marshall Wayne Thomas, whose 16-year-old son attends Ardmore High School, said he was stunned
00:45after receiving Walters' email.
00:47Thomas explained that he sat down with his son to review Kirk's public statements before
00:51making a decision.
00:53We looked at some videos and reels on social media, some of the things that he had to say,
00:57Thomas said.
00:58We agreed it would be beneficial to keep him out of school today.
01:02Edmund Superintendent Josh Delich told families the district will not be adding a moment of
01:06silence, citing disruption to the schedule.
01:09Since 2002, Oklahoma law has mandated a daily moment of silence in public schools, and specifically
01:15prohibits schools from coercing students into a particular activity.
01:20Walters said the refusal to honor Kirk speaks volumes.
01:23Walters added, Charlie Kirk inspired a generation to think for themselves, embrace free speech,
01:29and engage in meaningful debate, values that some school districts clearly don't want their
01:33students to hear.
