00:00Elon Musk heads $100 billion bid to purchase ChatGPT's parent company.
00:05Elon Musk is leading a group of investors offering $97.4 billion to buy OpenAI,
00:11the company behind ChatGPT, in a high-stakes move that could change the future of artificial
00:16intelligence. Musk has had a long-standing disagreement with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
00:21and has filed several legal complaints against the company. He argues that OpenAI,
00:26which was originally meant to be a non-profit, is now trying to make money from its AI technology,
00:31which goes against its founding goals. OpenAI is run by a non-profit organization,
00:37but it also owns a for-profit company called OpenAI LP. This for-profit branch helped grow
00:43OpenAI from being worth almost nothing to being valued at about $100 billion in just a few years.
00:49Sam Altman is mostly credited with making this happen.
00:52Musk's investment could give him control of OpenAI, competing with his company X.AI.
01:01Attorney Mark Toberoff emphasized fair compensation if OpenAI transitions to for-profit.
01:07Altman humorously countered by proposing to buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.
01:12The founders of OpenAI started the company because they were worried that artificial
01:17general intelligence could be dangerous for humanity. They created a board to review the
01:22company's products, and the code for those products was made public.
01:28In late 2023, OpenAI's board fired and reinstated Altman amid concerns of rapid progress compromising
01:35safety. Musk sued in 2024, dropping it after emails showed his initial support for profit-driven AI work.
01:42Musk filed a new lawsuit in August 2024, accusing OpenAI of rushing to create powerful AGI to make
01:49money. He also accused the company of racketeering. OpenAI responded, saying Musk was upset that he was
01:55no longer part of the company, especially after his attempt to convince his co-founders to let
02:00Tesla buy OpenAI in 2018 didn't succeed.
