00:00Natural Pest Control – Does Rice Work Against Rats and Cockroaches?
00:05Rats and cockroaches have an important role in many of our cities and ecosystems.
00:10They can carry disease, chew through walls, wires, and other home furnishings, and can
00:15generally create an unclean environment for living in.
00:19For this reason, if you find you have rats or roaches in your house, you will probably
00:23be looking for ways to get rid of them as quick as you can.
00:27Many of us prefer natural pest control as a way to protect the health of our families.
00:32One natural method that has recently gained traction is the cement and rice method.
00:38But does it actually work?
00:39This is the truth.
00:44Take a quick look online and you're likely to find a few sources that suggest something
00:48called the cement and rice method for getting rid of rats and cockroaches.
00:54This involves mixing Portland cement with rice or other attractants to lure pests.
00:59The powdered cement, once ingested, is believed to harden inside their stomachs upon contact
01:05with water, creating blockages that can be fatal.
01:11The assumption with this method is that the rodents and cockroaches will, in fact, consume
01:17the mixture without much hesitancy.
01:20The mixture then hardens in their stomachs and blocks up their digestive system.
01:25They will be unable to pass the cement and the internal blockages will eventually be fatal.
01:34There are a couple of things that this theory tends to get wrong.
01:37The most prominent is the assumption that the creatures will eat the mixture.
01:42Plants and cockroaches are cautious eaters, especially with unfamiliar substances like cement.
01:48It's unlikely they'll consume the mixture consistently or in sufficient quantities to cause fatal
01:53blockages.
01:55Simply put, there is a significant lack of actual evidence to support the efficacy of this method.
02:00So, let's take a look at this method.
