00:00our opening parties in just a few days and our lobbies come a long way but
00:07there's still a lot of work to do fortunately there is one space that's
00:12almost finished I'm planning to add some of my vintage dolls in here to greet my
00:19guests as they arrive but the curation process won't be easy so I'm bringing in
00:24another doll aficionado to help the gang's all here so excited oh I'm James Mansfield
00:32and I am a drag queen and wig stylist to the stars I thought James Mansfield would
00:37be the perfect person to help me prep dolls for the motel I also thought it'd be
00:41a good idea for us to have a few drinks before this started do you want to take
00:45my top off so I'll do it listen I have a lot of ideas they're not always good
00:50well the check-in's pink so do you think we should do just more pink ones as much pink as
00:59possible with a big vagina in there I'm happy to help because as everyone can see she she needs it

01:28think whoever had it before me gave it like a terrible haircut now I've got first-hand knowledge
01:35of how she takes care of these dolls and I can tell you right here right now they need some help I
01:40don't think she's ever seen a brush or even knows how it works so I'm happy to take over here like this
01:46one you could take like a color changing solution and apply it to the hair and the clothes and it
01:50would change colors that's pretty cool oh yeah I love children playing with chemicals that's great
01:54so women in corporate America look just like that I wish they did she going go to work that's 1962

02:20that motel I would say the most expensive one is probably live-action Christy I mean the outfit

03:20God when I think of what this room was like frightening blood red with natural wood look
03:29at it now gorgeous it's like an atrium it's like a church this small space has had a huge
03:36transformation monochrome baby pink has made it feel so airy and straight-up pretty
03:42oh the heart-shaped knobs so cute I love this marble so much it's so pretty and look at it with
03:50the custom tile nice so good beautiful light picture we have the Trixie motel sign we have plenty
03:59of items to buy we have sunglasses hats shirts I mean you could basically come here naked sorry we have
04:06nothing in your size we have this gorgeous check-in area we have a laptop we probably got some keys to
04:15the room somewhere we just haven't hired anyone to work here yet how to check people into a motel

07:09and everybody needs to be doing their part this is crunch time the pool furniture just arrived and

07:22nowhere to be found what at this motel they are heavy but it gets really windy here so yeah yeah they
07:32have to be these are commercial grade umbrellas this is so sickening isn't it amazing yes wow it's
07:40really all coming together oh my god are these just flat-out lawn chairs yeah they're like trailer park lawn
07:45chairs I will go homes they're called mobile homes oh my god this brings me back all right it's time to
07:57get this pool deck in order you look like an old man in Palm Springs right now with your outfit hell of a
08:04day makes you feel like you're 18 again this is where I'm gonna sit and when people don't act right

08:26that is okay hi uh I've been here for three weeks I've been trying the front desk nothing's working

09:38personal touches to the lobby and she's requested my assistance for one last DIY project welcome to Danny's
09:45DIY yay are you ready to do this thing yes I always learn something from you to be honest I've never
09:52done this before and I have no idea what I'm doing you didn't have to tell me that I would have totally
09:56believed you well I watched a seven minute video on the internet last night so I'm basically an expert
10:00oh great so we're completely prepared yes oh my god to be honest I usually have Philip help me with this
10:06stuff you know what though women have the power when like you and I should do this and then when we see
10:12David and Philip will be like well yeah we're not idiots we of course knew how to do this yeah well
10:17let's wait until we see what the end result is I might just end up giving this all to Philip to do it
10:23can't be horrible and then we're like of course we did it they're like we can see that we can tell you
10:27did it I mean I went to school for fashion design and I feel like working with fabrics is kind of similar
10:32well the person who made this did not go to school for fashion design
10:37no this is not my favorite textile design I mean it's just like a sad old man Hawaiian shirt pattern
10:44I know it's okay it's been like it's had lived multiple lives look at all of these layers
10:50drag queens are very crafty oh I know that's a fact maybe we can just sort of make sure there's enough space around
10:57cut it and then is it just pulling and tacking exactly there's like a few techniques that the
11:02internet lady gave me the internet lady yes work this can't be that hard it's a lot harder things you
11:08can learn from the internet cutting your own bangs oh never do that never do that acrylics home acrylics
11:15I mean this can't be that hard somebody's done it twice and it can look all sloppy and messy on the back and
11:21nobody will know it's very drag it's very putting a chair in drag kind of in the back just don't look
11:27in the back which is also like drag just don't look at the back of the wig you know what I mean
11:30all right so we got to measure and cut this out and then I'm already like on pins and needles here
11:41I know I'm gonna mess this up if you're not trying something new at your job every day what are you
11:47doing exactly I love getting down and dirty I say that as someone who's done the same makeup for
11:52about 15 years but still this is taking me back to fashion school I didn't like it I don't like
11:57sewing you don't no go to jail bitch I love sewing it's so relaxing it's like you start with nothing
12:05and you end with something it's like so technical and like all the measurements you're even cutting
12:11this fabric like you hate it okay why don't you do it get this line yes that's how it's done

13:51we just need to make sure it like doesn't really show on the outside I think we should do like a bunch

14:10okay if it puckers a little in the corners well let's look at what they did they went straight
14:14straight straight and then bunched at the corners so I think that's what we should do yeah let's

17:57the day the prime pool deck real estate is really over here and most of the chairs are over there oh
18:03oh I mean I just really didn't want to block this cute little bar area or like this walkway
18:09huh in a dramatic turn of events David had something to say about what we did we're rearranging
18:17getting rid of these teamwork yeah be careful
18:30did so did you dress for the room or did the room get dressed for you I look like this
18:43every day my darling the room is clearly inspired by me this is an amazing room it is gorgeous isn't it
18:51I think I think I'm gonna have another nap my darling okay I guess I better get back to
18:58I haven't eaten in three weeks maybe you could bring me some food when I wake up

19:14I think we're done I think so I love that we picked the hottest day of the process to move
19:35pool furniture yeah I'm not moving another thing it's you didn't move anything it's set
19:39uh you know I had eyes on it I think if David says it's set I'm done yeah it's amazing it's uh
19:49amazing
19:49look at how beautiful it is wow you guys I mean it was a pool deck now it looks like a resort
20:00yeah we've got these brand new custom umbrellas we've got deck chairs we've got a whole pink and
20:05white motif going on we have brand new mature ficuses we have our new pool equipment hidden
20:10behind this bar we have astroturf we have enough places to break off that you could be on like
20:15several dates at the same time doing these like beautiful rays it really draws your eye to the pool
20:22we can still pressure wash this and have it repainted like twice a year I don't want to say that we
20:28kept it simple out here because it's over the top but keeping it pink and white and then the rooms
20:34inside are so colorful and crazy it's just like really chic and beautiful ah the pool has always
20:40been my favorite feature of the motel and now it's living up to its potential taking it all in aren't
20:45you glad we did the roof a hundred percent I mean if we still had that rusty cottage cheese roof it
20:51would really take everything down a notch we haven't done the sign the sign still says coral sands
20:56well we do have a plan do you trust us I trust you okay I love this chair it suits you this is way
21:06more me the pool area here is amazing the bar is set very high for our final area which is now
21:14finally ready looking back we certainly had our work cut out for us this will be the lobby of the
21:22Trixie motel when in five years but we didn't have five years or even five months in fact by the time
21:30the permits were finally approved we only had three weeks to get it all done we had to move walls update
21:38electrical and plumbing basically the team was asked to pull off a miracle but I had all the faith
21:44and now I'm ready to bear witness I think we saved the best and most pink room for last

22:09when we bought the motel and we thought of the idea of it this is what I thought it would look like it's
22:16like the essence of the Trixie motel it's bright it's pink it's fresh and new but it also looks like
22:20it's been here forever it's like fabulous and heightened but it actually feels personal it
22:25feels like you're in someone's personal space this could be my living room I could live here
22:30the lobbies come so far from being the dark disgusting Texas roadhouse we saw four months ago
22:36look at this shit remember this was like a dark brown room and it had like stained leopard carpet
22:43it's just so much brighter now right it's so good the leopard print carpet that used to be in here
22:50was frightening but just look at this pink terrazzo tile now this is fierce
22:56so we got a little vintage mixed in with the new stuff yeah and look at this little like sitting area
23:03custom banquette so good right to go with everything else custom in the space I love these weird fixtures
23:11I've never seen anything like this I love the postmodern design it really matches the aesthetic
23:15of the motel look at this little sitting area like look at this it's really like a retro conversation pit
23:22and we have the portrait from your living room now hanging above the fireplace yeah I'm gonna have to figure
23:28out the big empty hole in my real living room but I love that so I really designed the room around that
23:33and when I designed this wallpaper I pulled in some of the cooler tones from the painting to tie it back in
23:40design wise you really gave me what I wanted because I really wanted this room to be like someplace everybody
23:45could come together you could have a conversation here you could be working at one of those tables in the banquettes
23:50we have places to plug in your computer your phone I mean the fact that there's a fireplace there's video games
23:55there's books to borrow this whole room just feels like you could use it in a million different ways and I'm happy to
24:01announce to all of you here in the 11th hour after a lot of work from David the liquor license came through
24:07so this beautiful bar that you created is actually going to get a lot of traffic oh I'm very happy to hear
24:16that I'm ready for a rosé spritzer let's role play my partner and I noticed you from the banquette over
24:24there can we buy you a drink yes because there's actually a bar now David and I will work here and you
24:31guys can sit mama is ready for a drink I'll take anything at this point we've gone from warm beer to pink
24:39champagne can you believe that the ceiling used to be literally here it was like the lowest ceiling here
24:45opening it up and adding the light fixture has totally transformed the space using these custom
24:50tiles for the bar top it's such a good idea and then matching wallpaper is this from the pool yeah
24:59like that is so good use this tile in so many different spots I love that we have the tile from
25:04the pool in here because everything is unique but still connected and the space is so functional I
25:09mean if we get booked out for parties and weddings you could set up catering there service sinks just like
25:13we have in my bar in Milwaukee we can make any kind of drink cocktail we have a cooler for beer it's
25:19fabulous you know what I really love is this little nook over here like a coffee moment with the record
25:27player I don't know it's so cute there it seems to be a hallway this used to be a hallway that went
25:32straight to the owner's suite now the owner's suite is a honeymoon suite waiting for the permits was agony
25:38but the structural changes make a world of difference this new bathroom is stunning
25:44wow the final reveal this doesn't even feel real I know we're done and it's perfect it's perfect I love
25:52that we saved the lobby for last like to me this room is just the cherry on top of a beautiful cake
25:59yeah we totally saved this for last on purpose not for permit issues oh that's true there was some
26:05bumps along the way but it makes it even sweeter to get to this moment we made it without a day to
26:11spare perfectly planned you might say and after finishing the check-in the exterior and the lobby bar
26:20we did go over budget but considering what we pulled off in just four months I'm really amazed
26:26so now that this place is completely perfect we have a party to plan that's the fun part we've
26:33invited all of our friends and family to come see the place yeah fashion designers drag queens party
26:39promoters managers means a lot of industry people that this first impression is going to be what helps
26:44us make money back so this party has to be like lit this is it we did it against all odds I knew we would
26:51oh such a weird feeling I mean all this work and time and energy we put into this it's hard to even
26:57describe very few people could really understand this process but I do think there's one person who

27:19Trixie it's been so long good to see you sweetie oh I owned this place for nearly 22 years and lived
27:29here for 21 of them you know when you're selling something that is like your girlfriend you want
27:38to make sure she's treated right so that's a big deal beautiful right and we love the motel pink so we
27:46always knew we were going to keep it pink yeah yeah fresh coat of paint well you're the one who
27:50painted it pink oh yes it was beige so I painted it entirely myself with a brush you painted this
27:56whole thing yourself with a brush how long did that take 24 hours yeah oh my god you know how many people
28:03it took with paint guns to do this like it's I was 50 at the time I just would dangle from the roof
28:10and stuff oh my god Ruby 50 years old dangling from the roof that's wild okay I wasn't a painter
28:16at heart you know I mean I didn't know what I was doing but I just figured I could do it if I just was
28:21you know I was under the gun yeah well that's what we felt like because we're not in anything at heart
28:26so we had to figure out how to do a lot of this yeah it was a lot of trial and error that's for sure
28:31I absolutely feel like it's still part of my family I mean it's been hard for me not to just visit
28:42oh my goodness oh it's just spectacular I love it yeah it's cool it's just really a trip a lot of pink
28:53you did good boys thank you so much I mean it's such a happy place it is I've spent so much time
29:02here since we bought it and I just it's there's something magical about it I was very uh worried
29:09about coming because maybe she wouldn't look like I thought she should yeah I might not love her anymore
29:17oh but I love her just as much you know she's transformed in a beautiful way she's in good
29:26hands I'm excited about her again I was worried about you coming too because next to us you mean
29:33you'd be the only person I know who cares about as much as we do yeah absolutely it really mattered
29:37to us that you came today yeah I was nervous too this has been a community for everyone but certainly
29:44uh gay men and women were very comfortable here and um that was certainly one of my goals everything
29:52turned out so beautiful now we're like do we have to let people in here I know that's a tough one how
29:58did you do it how did you let people come in and and trample and run about and then how did you manage
30:04this thing I mean it was just a a labor of love and it became a sort of a big family project there
30:11were moments that were kind of almost superhuman but uh the quality of the lifestyle of this place
30:21makes it so worthwhile for all of those experiences no matter how difficult they might be I'm excited to
30:28build those memories here I'm excited to see you clean a hotel room that's what I'm excited to see
30:35I can do it we really poured our heart and soul into this place yeah well it's very apparent very
30:43apparent and it's just beautiful thank you so much it means so much difference uh from when I had it
30:49uh which is what one hopes for you know you want the next person that takes the baton to uh put their
30:59stamp on it and to do their heart and soul and uh it's so clear you did that it's so precious
31:08we really care about this the spirit of it and the history of it and we want it to continue as a
31:13motel we want people to come here and be like I will never forget I was here that Trixie Motel has
31:19my blessing I'm happy to pass the baton can I show you some more rooms I'd love to see them okay

31:32you're gonna die for this whole experience would not be complete without Katya coming I mean this

32:22been MIA working on this stupid motel and basically ignoring every other responsibility she has like
32:29working with me getting ready for a tour she hasn't been rehearsing so if it's not absolutely perfect and

34:28watching Katya interact with the motel room just makes me very hopeful that our guests are slightly
34:37more respectful and more hygienic so not that it's a competition but what have you been doing
34:45um you know I've been I've been laying down a lot I've been uh yeah you you're the doer I'm then I'm the
34:55not doer in life there's like doers and there's talkers see I don't like to talk either right I don't
35:00like to do or talk I just be yeah you know I'm very existential you're ambitious but also not actually
35:06aspiring no no no not even that not even that work don't put words in my mouth no no don't work
35:11well one of the reasons I wanted to do this because you and I have traveled the whole world
35:15have been in every single motel and hotel and it's a lot of bad places out there
35:19there are a lot of ugly places out there I mean I have to say this is absolutely stunning
35:24yeah it's absolutely stunning I'm very impressed and I don't think I've been impressed by anything you've done
35:29I mean the music yeah TV career yeah yeah but this is like this is really great do you feel stressed
35:40out about the party I don't know if you've ever heard this but gay people can be a little judgmental
35:45a little critical yeah yeah yeah and you know drag queens aren't exactly famous for celebrating other
35:51drag queens successes no they're gonna somebody's gonna show up late and like fall into the pool and die
35:56but yeah the parties tomorrow on the stakes are extremely high because it's not just drag queens
36:01it's DJs party promoters models what are you gonna do if it all flops if no one ever books a room
36:09and you have to close and it's the most embarrassing humiliating failure of your whole life you ever
36:16think about that you know this is the first time I've actually been in one of these beds it's really
36:25comfortable yeah so we should watch something you want to watch a movie oh well the rooms actually
36:34don't have TVs this is more of an art piece you know we don't want people in the rooms watching TV
36:39we want them socializing so we have to talk to each other yeah let's just like we can have a conversation

38:57this outdoor space is very versatile we've seen it host a wedding we've seen it with all these beautiful lounge chairs
