Asean-S. Korea ties a model of trust, respect and mutual benefit, says Anwar

Asean and South Korea exemplify how progress can be achieved through cooperation, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In his opening remarks at the 26th Asean-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit on Monday (Oct 27), Anwar said the three-decade partnership has evolved into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, built on trust, respect, and mutual benefit.

Anwar also praised South Korea’s innovation and creativity, saying the newly adopted Plan of Action 2026–2030 offers a roadmap to unlock shared opportunities by combining Asean’s growth potential with Korea’s technological strengths.

00:00On behalf of my ASEAN colleagues, let me express our thanks to you to join us and, of course,

00:23rather belated by congratulations for being at the helm of the leadership in the Republic

00:35of Korea.

00:36And this is also your first ASEAN Republic of Korea Summit.

00:43You know that the relations have gone for the last three decades, model of trust, respect,

00:52very beneficial to both ASEAN and the Republic of Korea.

00:59You are aware, Mr. President and colleagues, that we are meeting at a time of technological

01:09disruption, strategic competition, fragmented supply chains.

01:14But amid these forces, ASEAN and the Republic of Korea stand out as nations that progress

01:23must come and can be enhanced through collaboration and cooperation.

01:33In 2024, trade between us exceeded $200 billion, reflecting the strength and resilience of

01:42our trade ties.

01:44You are passing through Kuala Lumpur.

01:45I will show you the Twin Tower and how the Koreans did and contribute.

01:59Now, by combining ASEAN's growth potential with the Republic of Korea's strength, we can

02:06shape an ecosystem that creates new opportunities, fostering inclusive growth open markets.

02:13We must develop human capital that is future ready to prepare our peoples to lead change.
