00:00The Rifleman, starring Chuck Connors.
00:30I don't care what you say, Hamilton. You ain't giving me enough time.
00:35Time? Do you realize I've extended your loan twice in the past year and you're still six months behind?
00:42Oh, I'll make it out. How? By spending most of your time in the saloon instead of behind a plow?
00:48By throwing your money away on liquor instead of buying seed and farm tools?
00:51Look at you. You're drunk right now.
00:54Well, what if I am? It ain't none of your business.
00:57It is where the bank's money is concerned.
00:59The bank's money. Don't hand me that stuff. You've got plenty of money in this here bank.
01:05The difference does it make if I'm just...
01:07There's no point in continuing this argument, Sam Elder. My mind's made up.
01:11What do you mean?
01:12You've left me no choice.
01:13How much longer you need to be, Pa?
01:16I told you to wait outside.
01:19Well, it's hot outside. Can't we go home?
01:21As soon as I finish my business, what's the bank in, man?
01:24Our business is finished, Sam. Your boy might as well know it.
01:27I'm asking you to vacate your ranch.
01:29Foreclosure proceedings will start immediately.
01:33No.
01:34There's nothing else I can do.
01:36No, you ain't gonna take my place.
01:38Sam, listen to me.
01:40Perhaps if you stopped your drinking and got a job,
01:43then later on you could get your ranch back.
01:46Get a job.
01:46Me?
01:50You want me to work for somebody else?
01:54No.
01:55Look, I got my own place and I aim to hold on to it.
01:59And if any of your bank people come around,
02:01I'll...
02:02I'll borrow me a gun and I'll blow their heads off.
02:05Come on, Sam.
02:09Wait a minute.
02:11How's that running to you?
02:11I meant what I said.
02:13You ain't gonna take my place.
02:15Sam.
02:17What was that all about, John?
02:19Well, Lucas, you're lucky you're a rancher
02:21instead of a banker like me.
02:22Taking a man's place away from him
02:23is the last thing in the world I want to do.
02:25Sam Elder's place?
02:26I gave him every chance.
02:28I'm sorry to hear it.
02:29Well, I'm sorry, too.
02:31Well, well, now, Mark, what can I do for you?
02:35I got a dollar to put in my savings.
02:37Fine.
02:38Come on, always.
02:38Somebody call the doctor.
02:45Come on, Pa.
02:46Get out of the street.
02:46Everybody.
02:48Will you wake up?
02:49You can sleep when you get home.
02:52Come on.
02:53Wake up.
02:54Pa, come on.
02:55You can sleep when you get home.
02:57Come on, Pa.
02:58Let's go home.
03:00Please.
03:00Tim.
03:01Tim.
03:02He's dead, son.
03:04Oh, what are you talking about?
03:05He's all right.
03:07Wake up, Pa.
03:08Damn boy.
03:08Look, son, it's no use.
03:13Ed?
03:16But he just had a few drinks,
03:17and then he went to the bank.
03:23You hear that banking, man?
03:25My Pa's dead on the count of you.
03:27My Pa's dead on the count of you.
03:27Come on.
03:57What's going to happen to him now, Pa?
04:02I don't know, son.
04:05You know, you were talking about hiring on an extra hand for Brandon, Tom.
04:12That's right, I was, wasn't I?
04:16Well, I hope he gets his money.
04:22Wait a minute, Tim.
04:25You got any idea where you're going?
04:27What you're going to do?
04:29Well, I reckon I ain't really giving it much thought.
04:32I'll get a job someplace, I suppose.
04:34Got no money.
04:36How about coming to work for me?
04:38Brandon time's coming up, and there's other things to be done.
04:41I could use a hand for a while.
04:44Well, I don't know.
04:45Of course, I couldn't pay you much.
04:47But if you save your money, I think it'll be enough to get you on your feet.
04:49Well, it can't do no harm, I suppose.
04:52Good.
04:53And Tim, how old are you?
04:56Eighteen.
04:57Well, that's old enough.
04:59You're a man now.
04:59You call me Lucas, huh?
05:02All right, Lucas.
05:03Go, pu, pu, pu!
05:14Ja!
05:17Go!
05:19Go!
05:20Go!
05:21Well, that's enough for now, Tim.
05:35You want to ride into town with me?
05:36Sure.
05:38I'm going to check and see if that new bulk of my rifles come in yet.
05:40Then we can meet Mark when he gets out of school.
05:42Good enough.
05:43Let's wash up, huh?
05:51I've got to go over to the bank, Tim.
05:57You want to come with me?
05:59I reckon not.
06:01You know, seeing as how you got paid yesterday,
06:04it might not be a bad idea if you put your money into a savings account like Mark and I have.
06:08That is, if you haven't got something else you want to do with.
06:11I'll think on it.
06:12Suit yourself.
06:14You go on in the store and ask Hattie if that gun parts come in.
06:16I'll be right back.
06:17Sure.
06:21Hello, Miss Hattie.
06:22I'll be with you in a minute, Tim.
06:24Yes, ma'am.
06:26Oh, a new catalog just came in.
06:28Oh.
06:42What can I do for you, Tim?
06:44Oh, Lucas McCain said he ordered a new bolt for his rifle.
06:47He was wondering if it'd come in yet.
06:48Yeah, I think so.
06:49Go take a look.
06:51Lucas, I can't do that.
07:14I have a responsibility to the depositors and to the bank directors.
07:18It's not my money, you know.
07:19No, I realize that, John.
07:22But tell me something.
07:23How much is that ranch worth?
07:25300, I'd say.
07:27Oh, come on now, John.
07:28You couldn't get 200 for it.
07:29And the way auctions go sometimes, you might not even get that much.
07:33All right.
07:33What do you want me to do?
07:36Hold off on the auction, John.
07:38Tim Elder's doing a good job for me.
07:39He's earning his money.
07:41I think in time he'll be able to buy it himself.
07:43After all, John, his father's buried on that land.
07:49He ought to have it.
07:50Aye.
07:51But suppose something happens.
07:52Suppose he doesn't work out.
07:54Well, I've got $200 in my savings account that says he will.
07:58Oh, no.
07:59I'll not have you risking your own money, Lucas.
08:01It's a fine thought, but...
08:02But what, John?
08:03I'll do it myself, and I'll take the risk.
08:06Maybe it'll make me feel better about the whole thing.
08:09Thanks, John.
08:09Go on.
08:10Get out of here, will you?
08:16How do you know that new bolt's gonna work on your rifle?
08:19Oh, it'll work all right.
08:25Hey, Luke?
08:26Yeah?
08:27My pa never taught me how to shoot a gun.
08:30I was wondering if you'd teach me.
08:32What for?
08:34Well, I ought to know how to protect myself.
08:36You were expecting some kind of trouble?
08:38No, of course I ain't.
08:40But everybody ought to know how.
08:42Say I was out on the trail someday, I'd have to kill my food, wouldn't I?
08:46Well, yeah, you're right there.
08:48But let me tell you something, Tim.
08:49If you learn how to use a gun, you're taking on a big responsibility.
08:53For yourself and everybody around you.
08:54Don't you worry about that.
08:55I don't know what you mean.
08:57I don't own a handgun.
08:58Well, that doesn't matter.
09:00I want to learn on a rifle like yours anyway.
09:03Well, I guess that can be arranged.
09:05Let's go before we miss Mark.
09:07Sure.
09:07Sure.
09:07How long did it take you to shoot like that?
09:36For a long time, Tim.
09:38A real long time with lots of practice.
09:41That's the way I want to learn.
09:42Well, not yet.
09:43You're going to start single shot first.
09:45Here, let's see aim.
09:45Now, you hold a gun like that and squeeze the trigger and you land right flat on your back here.
09:55Get this elbow down.
09:56Support the front end.
09:58This one out and rest the stock right into your shoulder.
10:02Yeah.
10:03Well, that's better.
10:04All right, Mark, go set up those cans again, will you?
10:06Well, that's better, but you're still not taking enough time, Tim.
10:25Squeeze off your shots.
10:26Don't jerk the trigger.
10:26Let me ask you something.
10:29Someday if I run across a rattler, you want me to take my time then?
10:33I mean, while I'm squeezing, he can be doing me a lot of damage.
10:35Maybe so, but if you missed your first shot, he could do a lot more damage.
10:46Two out of four.
10:48Well, get this elbow up and this one down.
10:56That's all right.
10:58All right, you're getting on to it.
10:59I'll set him up again.
11:00No, hold it, son.
11:00That's enough for today.
11:02We've still got a rash to take care of.
11:04Yeah, that's right.
11:05I'll put it away.
11:07All right.
11:09Gee, he sure is doing good.
11:11Yeah, he's coming along, son.
11:15Where's Tim, Mark?
11:17I think he's washing up at the well.
11:20You've been talking to him much the last few days?
11:23Sure, we've been talking a lot.
11:25His spirit seem any better?
11:28Well, I think so.
11:30You know, Mark, Sam Elder had a few faults, but nobody's close to a boy than his father.
11:34It's going to be rough on Tim for a while.
11:37Well, I sure am glad he's working with us.
11:40Well, work's the best way to get your mind off your troubles.
11:42Boy, am I hungry.
11:44Sit right down, Tim, and dig in.
11:47I could eat a pin-on pony.
11:48You're going to settle for some hot stew.
11:50Mind your manners, boy.
11:53Well, thank you.
11:54All right, Tim.
11:58Try again.
12:10Well, that's better.
12:12Only thing is, Tim, cradle that stock in your shoulder, you see?
12:16Get his elbow up, see?
12:18Try one more.
12:19All in.
12:28All in.
12:40All in.
12:42All in.
12:44All in.
12:45Well, you're sure eating in a hurry.
13:07You got some place to go?
13:10No, I'm...
13:11I mean, well, you know what night it is.
13:14Night?
13:15Saturday night.
13:16That's supposed to mean something?
13:18Well, it's the last Saturday in the month.
13:20So?
13:22Oh.
13:24Oh, that's right.
13:25I forgot.
13:25It's payday.
13:28Oh, you're injushing me.
13:30You know, Tim, I asked you before what you were going to do with your money.
13:34I know a man's affairs or his private business.
13:37So I'm just going to say I hope you're saving it.
13:39Yeah, I got it all.
13:41I'm glad to hear that.
13:41Don't you think it would be a good idea to put it in a bank where it would be safe?
13:47No.
13:50Well, why not?
13:51That's what we do.
13:52No, I don't want nothing to do with no bank.
13:55What have you got against the bank, Tim?
13:59You want me to give them my money after what they did to my pa?
14:02Well, you can't blame the bank for that.
14:05Oh, I can't, huh?
14:06You know as well as I do, that man in there, that John Hamilton, he'd as well have taken a gun and shot my pa in the back.
14:13Now, wait a minute, boy.
14:17Now, listen to me, Tim.
14:18John Hamilton was just doing his job.
14:21What happened to your father wasn't his fault.
14:22Look, son, if it's bothering you that much, why don't you go in and see John?
14:29Have a talk with him.
14:30Clear the air.
14:31No, I ain't going near John Hamilton.
14:34At least not yet.
14:35And when I do, it's not going to be to have a talk, it's going to be with a gun.
14:39But you do that, boy, and you wind up flat on your bank.
14:42Well, we'll see.
14:44Don't forget, I'm getting pretty good with that gun of yours.
14:46After all, you taught me, and you're the best.
14:50I'm getting pretty good with that gun.
15:20You think he meant that about Mr. Hamilton?
15:27Well, if he did, son, he's in for a surprise.
15:31We've just been wasting our time.
15:34You can let him go?
15:38No, I can't do that, Mark.
15:40He needs us more than ever now.
15:44I guess I'm just beginning to realize it.
15:46You start cleaning up the dishes, huh, boy?
15:49I'm not gonna go.
15:49I'm not gonna go.
15:50I'm not gonna go.
15:52Come on.
16:22Come on.
16:52Come on.
16:58Tim.
16:59Well, if you've come to pay me off, I'll understand.
17:02Well, I didn't come for that.
17:04Still a lot of work to be done around here, and I'll still need you.
17:07I came to tell you there'll be no more shooting lessons.
17:10You know enough now to protect yourself.
17:13But that's all you know.
17:15Well, we'll see.
17:17Some day, Tim, when you get your own gun, I hope you use it wisely.
17:23I'd hate to think I taught you any other way.
17:26Or for any other purpose.
17:28Sure.
17:29You're not as good as you think you are.
17:32Listen to me, will you, Tim?
17:35How about John Hamilton?
17:36In there at the table, you said a man's private affairs are his own business.
17:40That's right, I did, but you're gonna hear me out anyway.
17:43Now, Monday morning...
17:44Turn around and listen to me.
17:46Monday, I'll be out with the cattle most of the morning.
17:49In the afternoon, I'm going in to see John, and you're coming with me.
17:52There's something you ought to know, boy.
17:54What?
17:55You come with me and you'll find out.
17:57And when you do, I hope it'll change your thinking some.
18:00Hey, nothing's gonna do that.
18:03Like you said, we'll see.
18:05Good night.
18:22Anybody home?
18:23Lucas?
18:24Howdy, Miss Holly.
18:25Oh, my gracious.
18:27You scared me half to death, Tim Elder.
18:29Tim Elder?
18:30Tim?
18:31Where is that boy?
18:32Tim!
18:33Can I help you out, ma'am?
18:34Oh, no.
18:35No, no thing.
18:36Oh, Lucas is off with the herd.
18:37Well, I didn't come to see Lucas.
18:39You're the one I want.
18:40I had to go by Ned Carter's place, leave him some seed.
18:45You know, his missus has been sick, and so he couldn't come in to get it.
18:48Oh, here it is.
18:50So I thought I might just as well drop by and bring you this.
18:52It's the receipt for those two rifles you ordered.
18:54They came in this morning.
18:56Well, do you have them with you now?
18:57They're right back there.
18:59Lift them out.
19:00Oh, Tim, you're still only four dollars for them.
19:06Well, I've only got three right now, ma'am.
19:08Could I pay you one a little later?
19:09Oh, sure.
19:10That'll be all right.
19:12Well, what are you going to do with them things?
19:15You going hunting?
19:24Yeah.
19:25I'm going hunting.
19:26Well, don't blow your head off.
19:27Tim!
19:28Yo, Tim!
19:29Tim!
19:30Yo, Tim!
19:32Go for the show.
19:33I got a boy.
19:34No.
19:35Where are you?
19:36No.
19:37Where are you?
19:38No.
19:39I got a boy.
19:40No.
19:41No.
19:42No.
19:43No.
19:44It's a big one.
19:45No.
19:46No.
19:47No.
19:48No.
19:49No.
19:50No.
19:51Let's go.
20:21Let's go.
20:51Let's go.
20:57Hamilton!
20:59John Hamilton, come out of here!
21:01Hamilton!
21:03Yes, Tim?
21:19I'm gonna kill you.
21:23Right here in the street, just like you did my pa.
21:27Tim, surely you can't think I'm responsible for your father's death.
21:31No, you can't talk me out of it.
21:33I don't carry a gun, Tim.
21:35Well, I bought one for you.
21:39You know how to use it?
21:41I'll not fight with you.
21:57Wait!
21:59I'm gonna back up to the middle of the street, and then I'm gonna shoot.
22:03So you just better be ready.
22:07All right, hold it, Tim.
22:17Lucas, tuck some sense into this boy's head.
22:19Stay out of this.
22:20This is my affair.
22:21Drop your rifle, Tim.
22:23This is not your business.
22:25Drop it, I said.
22:31Now, Hamilton.
22:33I said you were a man, but I was wrong.
22:55You're nothing but a stupid boy.
22:57You're too blinded by hate to see any of the good around you.
22:59I only do...
23:00You'd have killed him, you'd have killed the best friend you ever had.
23:03What are you talking about?
23:05John, you wanna tell him?
23:06No.
23:07Now, you listen to me, son.
23:09You can't go around using people like this.
23:11I want you to see something.
23:13John, will you come here?
23:15Now, you watch this boy, and you mark it well.
23:18Get over there.
23:19John.
23:27How'd you learn to shoot like that?
23:28I taught him last year when the bank opened.
23:30He could've killed you easy, boy.
23:32Let me tell you something, son.
23:34When you've got business with a man,
23:35whether it's banking business or killing,
23:37you best know something about the man
23:39before you stick your neck out.
23:41You best know something about the man
23:42before you stick your neck out.
23:43You best know something about the man
23:44before you stick your neck out.
23:46All aboard, Tim.
23:47All aboard, Tim.
24:17Lucas, I know I was wrong all along.
24:22I'm sorry.
24:23Well, Tim, it takes a man to admit his mistake.
24:26Thank you, Lucas.
24:28Thank you, Mr. Hamilton.
24:29Don't you worry.
24:30Now that I got the ranch back, I'll make it pay you back every cent.
24:33Well, you haven't got it back yet, Tim.
24:35You'll be working for John till you're 21.
24:37Then it'll belong to you.
24:38Well, the way I look at it, it's as good as mine right now.
24:42Up aboard, sir.
