01:42Fred, give me a hand here.
02:04Doc.
02:06Doc.
02:07Hey, look, there's something else.
02:09It's him, Doc.
02:10Easy with them, boys.
02:12Careful.
02:14Go get Micah's son.
02:16Who is he, Lucas?
02:17I don't know.
02:17I found him in a grove outside town.
02:19I was noticing.
02:20He's got a real mean looking wound.
02:24Thanks, boys.
02:28There's some brandy in the desk.
02:33My cousin Jeff got shot that way once.
02:36Didn't live to say amen.
02:38Now, why don't you run along, Mr. Hatterbury?
02:40We'll manage.
02:40I'm glad to stay, Doc.
02:42That won't be necessary.
02:43Oh.
02:45Oh, sure, Doc.
02:46Sure.
02:46Glad to be of help any time, Doc.
02:48Well, so long, Doc.
02:49So long, Lucas.
02:51Look for some papers in his jacket.
02:53See if he can find any next to Ken.
02:55Is it that bad, Doc?
02:56It's probably worse.
02:58He's had that bullet in him for a day or maybe two.
03:02Michael will be here in a minute.
03:12Oh, no identification here, Doc.
03:15Is he going to be all right?
03:16Doc's not sure, son.
03:17He might.
03:19You want to wait for me over at Hattie's?
03:21Oh, can I stay?
03:22All right.
03:23Come on.
03:24A little bit more.
03:25All right.
03:26Being born and dying are really simple experiences, Mark.
03:29I guess not knowing about them can be more frightening than knowing.
03:33Mark Deck, Doc.
03:35Well, maybe that's our story, huh, Luke?
03:38Maybe.
03:42Doc?
03:44Who is he?
03:45Don't know.
03:55Stoddard.
03:55You know him?
03:56We'll have to try a transfusion.
03:58Mike, I asked you a question.
04:00I know him.
04:02Do the world a favor, Doc.
04:03Let him die.
04:04What'd you say?
04:05I said let him die.
04:07Micah, I'll be right back, sir.
04:09Lucas, come here.
04:13Mr. Stoddard is going to die unless we do something right away.
04:16Transfusion might save him and then it might kill him, too.
04:19But we'd better try.
04:20Are you willing?
04:21Whatever you say, Doc.
04:22Then we'd better get to work.
04:23Now, I want you to take your shirt off.
04:25Marshal, do they know anything yet?
04:28Marshal.
04:29Oh, my God.
04:59You think you'll be a doctor someday, Mark?
05:18I don't know.
05:21Not if I have to stick people with needles.
05:23Well, sometimes it's the only way you can cure them.
05:26You take this invention here.
05:27It's called a naveling tube.
05:30It allows me to draw blood from your pa's arm and pump it over here into Mr. Stoddard's arm.
05:35Now, if your pa's blood and Mr. Stoddard's blood mix together, all right, Mr. Stoddard's got a chance to recover.
05:41But suppose they don't mix?
05:45Then Mr. Stoddard will have to cash in his chips, I reckon.
05:48Thought he probably would anyway, Mark.
05:50It's what I call a stack pick.
05:54You all right, Lucas?
05:55Fine.
05:55I was just thinking I'd like to know who dealt a hand.
06:03Whoa!
06:07Whoa!
06:13Damn!
06:14You see any trace of him?
06:15Nope.
06:18Then we proceed along this road?
06:24Road to the right, Mr. Jethro.
06:27Not more than an hour.
06:29North Fork?
06:30If he got that far.
06:32All right, North Fork.
06:34Hill!
06:35You wait here for me.
06:59Micah?
06:59It's Luke.
07:03Micah?
07:04Do you want me to help you break it down, Mr. McCain?
07:06Is Micah in there?
07:07Well, I reckon he is.
07:08I seen him go in.
07:09I seen him draw the curtains.
07:10I didn't see him come out.
07:13Micah?
07:24Come in.
07:27I'll see you later.
07:28Oh, sure, sure, sure.
07:30Lucas, sure.
07:32How's the patient?
07:33I don't know yet.
07:34Doc says it might be several hours.
07:36He's taking out the bullet now.
07:38Bullet.
07:40That's something, isn't it?
07:43I'm going to tell you a fact you won't believe, Lucas, boy.
07:47I've worked 26 years out of my life as a peace officer,
07:50and I've never had as much faith in justice as I do right now.
07:54Not one day in 26 years has the whole pattern,
07:56the rhyme and the reason made as much sense as it has today.
07:59Who started?
08:02Who?
08:03What's he to you, Micah?
08:04You wasted your blood, Lucas, and that's too bad.
08:07Well, that was my decision.
08:09I'm just telling you he isn't worth it.
08:13Well, then he's not worth getting drunk over either.
08:16I think that's my decision.
08:18I'll see you later.
08:22I'll see you later.
08:22We're going home, Mark.
08:43Can't we wait?
08:45No, we can't.
08:46It's out of our hands now.
08:48We'd best get about our home business.
08:49I don't want him to die, Paul.
08:55You barely knew him.
08:57That don't matter.
08:59No, it doesn't.
09:01Come on.
09:02Come on.

20:0330 years ago john stoddard was my closest friend stood up for me at my wedding i married elizabeth
20:14cook the prettiest girl in montana territory and i guess i was just about the happiest man anywhere
20:20elizabeth was 18 i was 22 and nothing was impossible for us you know the feeling lucas
20:27yeah micah i know the feeling john was a wild kid irresponsible gambled drank a lot elizabeth being
20:38like she was a natural born mother she decided to take john under a wing we formed him we bought a
20:45little farm and she decided to have him come and work for us well things went very hard but elizabeth she
20:53just cooked and sewed and made do with what she had whenever there was a dance or a party in town
20:59she'd put on the very same dress he was married in and laugh about it never say a word that's how she
21:04was and all the time stoddard kept looking off at the hills talking about gold and how he wished
21:11he'd had a stake elizabeth and i used to laugh about it we were rich without any gold and we knew it
21:17i know what you mean well that spring there was a drought and every dollar we had was in the ground
21:28we were scared plants had come up and parched brown in a week and there was nothing we could do but
21:32haul water and pray did you ever see a field dry up and blow away lucas it's quite a frightening thing
21:41especially when it's your life well in august i went into panic and borrowed two hundred dollars
21:49mortgaged everything i owned the farm equipment everything when i got back that night the three of
21:55us sat around the kitchen table trying to figure out how we were going to make it through the winter
21:58without losing the farm we made a budget lucas accounted for every penny and then some
22:05the next morning johnny was gone and so was the two hundred dollars oh he was kind enough to leave
22:11a note saying he'd be back soon and with the money doubled four hundred dollars but i never saw him
22:17again until today what did you do do elizabeth died in september she got the fever i was forced to sell
22:29a horse the month before and had to run all the way to town to get a doctor when i got back she was dead
22:35and thanks to stoddard she died all alone on a dirt farm that wasn't even mine anymore
22:42micah doc wants you to come on over all right son we'll be there in a minute but doc says micah's

24:04the earth turns mark his time was up i don't know what kind of a
24:17man stoddard was and i'm not sure we'll ever know but he kept the promise he made 30 years ago
