00:00Just before midnight, this car park in Hobart Salamanca became the scene of a violent crime.
00:09We are treating this as a murder at this stage.
00:11Police were called to the Morrison Street car park after reports of an altercation between two groups of people.
00:18Two men received stab wounds. A 20-year-old man died from his injuries on the way to hospital.
00:24A 23-year-old man who was also stabbed remains in hospital in a stable condition.
00:30The two victims were known to each other. We don't know if they were known to the offender.
00:34Divers today searched for clues. The knife still hasn't been recovered.
00:39Police are reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses, trying to piece together what happened and how many people were involved.
00:47They believe it was an isolated incident, which may be linked to a previous incident, which involved a person from each group.
00:55So far, a 20-year-old man has been charged with assault and a 17-year-old remains in custody.
01:02We hope to lay more charges, but as I said, it's very early investigation, so we've got a long way to go.
01:06We've got a lot of people to speak to and a lot of CCTV still to go through.
01:10The Police Association of Tasmania is continuing to call on the state government to fund the long-term use of knife-detecting wands for police officers.
01:19The wands were trialled earlier this year, but they haven't been committed to on an ongoing basis.
01:24The interim budget is coming up on the 6th of November, and we hope to give the police the new resources that they need to continue to be tough on knife crime.
01:35We will not tolerate any form of knife crime in this state.
01:39My thoughts are with the families.
01:41This is a tragic event.
01:43We don't want to see these sorts of things happening in Tasmania.
01:46Police are trying to locate the other people involved in the incident.
01:50Anyone with further information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
