00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and oh my word in heaven lord help me that doesn't say WatchMojo.
00:13That's right, I'm hijacking WatchMojo to let you guys know that if you like more in-depth
00:17video game lists, come over and check out Mojo Plays.
00:20I promise, not everyone's voices are as Australian as mine.
00:23For now, let's take a look at some hidden secrets in classic Pokemon games.
00:27Also, when I did the voiceover for this video, I was really sick.
00:29Okay, let's go.
00:30Masino.
00:40I'm ranking this one low because regardless of its iconic status, it's fairly well known.
00:45I will however be saving a lesser known Masino entry for later.
00:48Although not an intentional feature, the Masino glitch became one of the most famous secrets
00:52in the Pokemon series.
00:54This glitch occurs in the first generation games when players follow a specific sequence
00:58and encounter a wild Pokemon along the Cinnabar Island's coast.
01:02The game attempts to read an empty memory value reserved for Pokemon, resulting in a strange
01:06encounter.
01:07With 190 memory slots allocated for Pokemon, but only 151 species, 39 slots lack complete
01:13data.
01:13Accessing these creates a Pokemon with no number, hence the name MissingNo, MissingNumber, MissingNo.
01:20Here's a fun little entry that does the rounds on Pokemon subreddits every few years, so make
01:31sure to let us know in the comments if we taught you this.
01:33It didn't work in the first generation of games, so some players aren't aware Earthquake can
01:38hit a Pokemon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, and if it does, it will have its
01:42power doubled for that Pokemon.
01:44Dig does not make you invulnerable, and it's a genuinely helpful skill to have Earthquake ready
01:49to ruin someone's day.
01:51Max Friendship
01:52In the Gold and Silver games, players must increase their friendship stat to evolve certain
02:05Pokemon.
02:05It's a neat feature that added another layer of depth to the game.
02:08A prototype of this mechanic appeared in Pokemon Yellow, but it was limited to just Pikachu.
02:13However, players could manipulate Pikachu's friendship stat by using a potion on a fully
02:18healthy Pikachu.
02:18Since a healthy Pikachu doesn't need a potion, it won't use it, but the potion still increases
02:23the friendship stat.
02:24I don't need to tell you all this, but you can quite easily max out your friendship before
02:27you even know each other's last names.
02:30Pikachu's a Svendalburg.
02:31Fun fact.
02:39Walk Through Walls
02:40One of the most fascinating glitches in Pokemon Red and Blue is the Walk Through Walls trick.
02:45Well, not the most, but at least in the top 20.
02:47To make this glitch happen, you've got a few options.
02:50My version involves the player tricking the game into thinking they're still in the Safari
02:54zone, even after leaving.
02:55One method, the ledge trick, begins with the player having a poisoned Pokemon with over
03:00124 HP.
03:01After entering the Safari zone and paying for the Pokemon Center, the player deposits all
03:06Pokemon except the poisoned one.
03:07When trying to leave, they must select No when asked.
03:10After saving, restarting, and following a series of complex steps, including jumping off a ledge,
03:15the glitch is activated, allowing the player to walk through walls and other obstacles.
03:19Ghostly.
03:21Faraway Island
03:22In Pokemon Emerald, there is a small island off the coast of the main area that is normally
03:26inaccessible through regular gameplay.
03:28To reach it, the game must either be hacked, or the player must have received a special map
03:32from Nintendo.
03:33The second option was only available during special events in Japan and Taiwan in the
03:37mid-2000s.
03:38The island itself is relatively unremarkable, being small with little to explore.
03:43Its main attraction is the incredibly rare Pokemon that can be found there.
03:47Faraway Island is the only place in the series where players can catch a wild new shiny Pokemon.
03:54Starting with the second generation of Pokemon, players had the rare opportunity to encounter
03:57Pokemon with alternate color patterns, known as shiny variants.
04:01The term shiny comes from the distinctive sound effects and animations that play when a
04:05player encounters one.
04:06In the first five generations, the odds of finding a wild shiny Pokemon were 1 in 8,192.
04:12Let me repeat that, 1 in 8,192.
04:16Less than one hundredth of 1%.
04:19This probability was increased to 1 in 4,096 in later generations.
04:23These Pokemon are identical to their original counterparts in terms of abilities and stats,
04:28with the only difference being their unique coloration.
04:31If you've encountered a shiny Pokemon accidentally as a casual player, I bet you're losing your
04:35mind right now.
04:36Encounter Rate Changes
04:37In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, players may notice variations in the frequency of wild Pokemon
04:47encounters on certain days.
04:49While not immediately obvious, the game is designed to adjust encounter rates based on
04:53real-world historical dates.
04:55As a subtle detail, the developers program the game to reference its internal calendar,
04:59modifying encounter rates on specific holidays in both the US and internationally.
05:03Additionally, the game decreases encounter rates on dates associated with tragic historical
05:07events, such as the bombing of Hiroshima and 9-11, adding a thoughtful layer of reflection
05:11to the gameplay experience.
05:13The layer of reflection being, where the f*** are all the Pokemon?
05:16I go back to work on the 12th.
05:17Mewtwo
05:20Though not as enigmatic as the Pokemon it was created from, Mewtwo has earned a lasting
05:33legacy as one of the most famous post-game secrets in the series.
05:37Like Mew, Mewtwo is mentioned in the journals found in the Pokemon mansions.
05:41From these journals, players learn Mewtwo was a highly powerful and aggressive Pokemon,
05:45potentially responsible for the mansion's destruction.
05:48After becoming the Kanto Pokemon champion, players can explore a mysterious cave north of
05:53Cerulean City, home to many strong Pokemon.
05:56At the cave's end, players will find Mewtwo, easily the most powerful Pokemon in red, blue
06:00and yellow.
06:01Shockingly, many players still don't know Mewtwo is in the original series.
06:15The Safari Surf
06:18Players can encounter rare wild Pokemon in the Safari Zone while surfing along the East
06:29Coastline.
06:29To do this, first enter the Safari Zone, then exit and head through Route 19 to surf on the
06:34East Coastline near Seafoam Islands.
06:36While surfing, players will encounter wild Pokemon from the Safari Zone, which are typically not
06:41found in water.
06:42Rare Safari Zone Pokemon such as Chansey, Kangaskhan and Taurus can also be battled in court.
06:48This Safari Surf is similar to the Walkthrough Walls trick, as both involve the game mistakenly
06:53thinking the player is still within the Safari Zone.
06:55Level 100 Before the First Gym
06:57The XP Underflow Glitch, as it's commonly known, allows players to level any Pokemon to
07:02100 before even facing the first gym.
07:04This glitch from blue, red and yellow occurs due to programming flaws, much like Missingno or
07:10walking through walls.
07:11Pokemon in the medium-slow experience group starting at level 1 were mistakenly assigned
07:16a negative experience value exceeding 16 million.
07:19Because of this bug, the game interprets these negative experience points as an enormous positive
07:23value.
07:24As a result, when a level 1 Pokemon with negative experience doesn't accumulate enough points
07:28to reach a positive range, the game assigns it level 100.
07:31Boom.
07:32Easy.
07:33Fight with red.
07:40One of the biggest surprises in Pokemon Gold and Silver is the opportunity to battle the
07:46protagonist of the original games, Red.
07:48After collecting all the badges, players can head to Mount Silver and explore a cave beneath
07:52it.
07:52At the end of the cave, they'll encounter Red, who challenges them to a battle.
07:56This fight is one of the toughest in the entire Pokemon series, with Red's team of six
08:00Pokemon, all level 73 or higher.
08:02The battle is grueling for those unprepared, but defeating the original and most legendary trainer
08:07offers a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
08:10Beating yourself off has never been so hard.
08:12It's such a bad joke.
08:26Fight with Professor Oak.
08:32This situation is similar to the Messingno glitch.
08:35Shocking, right?
08:36Professor Oak is mostly a supportive and kind figure throughout the game.
08:40However, by manipulating the game in a specific sequence, players can trigger a battle with
08:44the Professor.
08:45Bet you didn't know you could do that.
08:47In this fight, Professor Oak has a full team of Pokemon.
08:50This suggests that it wasn't just a glitch or error, but rather a feature intentionally
08:54created by the developers.
08:56It remains unclear whether this was a scrap part of the game, or something designed purely
09:00for testing purposes.
09:01I like to imagine that it's AI gone mad.
09:06The Mew Glitch is one of the most famous glitches in the original generation, whilst being almost
09:13completely unknown to modern audiences.
09:15It appears in blue, red, and the earlier Japanese versions of the game, including green.
09:19Discovered by players in 2003, seven years after original release, the glitch allows players
09:24to encounter and catch Mew.
09:26The method for catching Pokemon via this glitch also works on the 3DS Virtual Console.
09:31One early spot to trigger the glitch is on Route 24, where a Junior Trainer appears west
09:35of Nugget Bridge.
09:37Players must catch an Abra, use teleport to escape the Junior Trainer, defeat the first
09:41swimmer in the Cerulean Gym, and then return to Route 24 to trigger the glitch.
09:45There you go, a little Mew just for you.
09:48Glitch City
09:49Technically, this is a variation of the Safari Zone Surf glitch, but this was a tough list,
09:58so let me split hairs a little.
09:59To trigger it in red and blue, the player enters the Safari Zone and then exits.
10:03When asked if they want to leave, they must choose No and return to the Safari Zone.
10:07After saving, quitting, and restarting the game, the player exits the Safari Zone again
10:11and walks 500 steps.
10:13However, the game still thinks they're in the Safari Zone, presenting the same scenery,
10:16natural features, and landmarks, although a little, let's say, odd-looking.
10:21Players can only escape this glitched city with a Pokemon that can fly or teleport.
10:25The glitch happens because the program fails to recognize that the player has left the
10:29Safari Zone.
10:30This also activates the Walk Through Walls glitch.
10:32Alright, fine, I'm really splitting hairs here.
10:35Exploit the Battle AI
10:36In Pokemon Red and Blue, power points limit your ability to attack enemy Pokemon, while
10:49the enemy Pokemon have unlimited PP but are restricted to using type-effective moves.
10:53This restriction on the enemy's moves can be exploited by the player.
10:57The Battle AI determines the enemy's moves and item usage.
11:00For example, Giovanni, the Viridian City Gym Leader, faces a significant disadvantage because
11:05his ground-type Pokemon are vulnerable to water- or grass-type moves.
11:09Similarly, a level 36 Venomoth can defeat a level 62 Dragonite as the Battle AI forces the
11:14Dragonite to use only defensive moves like Barrier.
11:17It's a simple math problem with all the answers online.
11:19Sony Nintendo
11:25In the international versions of Red and Blue, the debug menu contains a reference to Nintendo's
11:30rivalry with Sony.
11:32Sega had been Nintendo's main competitor in the console market until it exited due to
11:36poor business decisions, allowing Sony to enter the industry.
11:39I love Sega.
11:40I'm just being factual.
11:41The rivalry between the original PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 seems to have influenced
11:46Game Freak's developers when setting default values for the player and rival
11:49The developers assigned the hidden values Ninten to the player and Sony to the rival.
11:56These names are not normally visible as players must choose their own or use preset names which
12:00don't include the hidden values.
12:01Thanks to hackers, we get to see just how bitchy Nintendo actually is.
12:05Hidden Safari Zone
12:06As we've discussed ad nauseum, the Safari Zone in Red and Blue is a wellspring of fascinating
12:11glitches and bugs.
12:12It's also a prime location for hunting rare Pokemon not found anywhere else in the game.
12:16However, players were disappointed to learn that the Safari Zone was not included in Gold
12:21and Silver, even though it appears in later versions.
12:23It's clear that the Safari Zone was originally planned for Gold and Silver, but the completed
12:27area was never added to the final game.
12:30Despite this, the unfinished code for the Safari Zone remains in the game, and players have been
12:34able to access the hidden area using a GameShark.
12:36The Grumpy Old Man in Viridian City is linked to a glitch in Red and Blue.
12:49Another Red and Blue entry.
12:51This game was a mess.
12:52A beautiful mess.
12:53Now remember when I said at the start of this video that I'd have a lesser-known Missingno
12:56glitch?
12:57Well, this Grumpy Old Man can be used to summon the infamous glitch Pokemon.
13:00This Old Man glitch occurs when the player uses the fly move to reach Cinnabar Islands
13:05right after the Old Man teaches the player how to catch a Pokemon.
13:08While surfing on the eastern coastline of the island, wild Pokemon encountered are tied
13:12to the player's name, specifically the index numbers of the characters in it.
13:15This means that by selecting a specific name with specific letters, players can encounter
13:20Missingno.
13:21It's borderline genius.
13:23That's why I'm going to name my firstborn child $10 million and heaps of cake.
13:30Clone a Pokemon
13:34To perform the clone glitch, you'll need two Game Boys, two copies of Gold and Silver,
13:38two Firstborn Suns, and a linking cable.
13:41Actually, don't worry about the Suns.
13:42Begin by selecting the Pokemon you want to clone on one Game Boy and the Pokemon to be
13:46sacrificed on the other.
13:47After linking the Game Boys, head to a Pokemon Center and enter the Cable Club.
13:51From there, go to the Trade Center and trade the Pokemon you want to clone on one Game
13:55Boy and a Sacrificial Pokemon on the next.
13:56Next, reset the Game Boy containing the Pokemon to be cloned, making sure not to save.
14:02If done correctly, the cloned Pokemon will appear on the other Game Boy Boom Eugenics.
14:07I think.
14:08I'm quite dumb.
14:10Rareest Pokemon
14:10In Red and Blue, rare Pokemon like Genghis Khan and Chansey can only be found in the Safari
14:16Zone.
14:17However, Rapidash and Fearow that can use Payday, Meowth's Move, are considered the rarest Pokemon
14:21in these games.
14:22Gold and Silver introduced another rare Pokemon, Dunsparce.
14:26Red and Blue also introduced trade evolutions, which allowed players to encounter unique
14:29forms of Pokemon that can only be obtained through training.
14:32For example, Alakazam, the final evolution of Abra, evolves from a Kadabra when traded,
14:36and Machamp, the final form of Machop, evolves into Machoke through trading.
14:41In Gold and Silver, players can obtain Politoed, one of the final forms of Poliwag, by trading
14:45a Poliwhirl holding a King's Rock.
14:47If you didn't know any of these, legally you have to like the video.
14:50Consider yourself learnt up.
