00:00Jussie Smollett is insisting he was the victim in the 2019 hate crime hoax that rocked Chicago
00:06and made national headlines.
00:08In a recent Variety interview, the former Empire actor blamed the Chicago Police Department,
00:14former Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and the two brothers who testified that he paid them to stage the
00:19attack.
00:20Smollett is currently promoting a new R&B song, competing on Fox's Special Forces,
00:25World's Toughest Test, and is featured in the Netflix documentary, The Truth About
00:30Jesse Smollett, premiering August 22nd.
00:33The 2019 incident began when Smollett claimed he was assaulted late at night, targeted with
00:38racist and homophobic slurs, and attacked with a noose and bleach.
00:44Investigators later determined the attack was staged.
00:47The Osundero brothers, who were extras on Empire, testified that Smollett orchestrated the attack,
00:53including a rehearsal.
00:55Smollett was convicted of filing a false police report, though the verdict was overturned
01:00in 2024 on a technicality.
01:03He was not exonerated.
01:05Despite this, he continues to maintain his innocence, calling the case against him a false narrative
01:10that left a stain on his character.
