00:00Footage from inside Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa's car captures a crowd hurling objects at the vehicle.
00:09On Tuesday, about 500 people surrounded his car as he approached an event in Ecuador's Caña province.
00:17The attack left his vehicle damaged with what a minister said looked like bullet holes.
00:22President Noboa escaped unharmed.
00:24But Environment and Energy Minister Ines Manzano filed a formal report of an assassination attempt on the president.
00:34She said police have detained five people and the acts will not go unpunished.
00:38Noboa's office said the detainees faced terrorism and attempted assassination charges.
00:44However, the National Indigenous Federation, or Canae, said orchestrated violence had targeted people mobilizing to protest Noboa's arrival,
00:52with elderly women among those attacked in a brutal police and military action.
00:58In a post on X, the organization said at least five of us have been arbitrarily detained.
01:04Over recent weeks, Canae has staged strikes to protest the government's decision to end diesel subsidies.
01:11It has held marches and set roadblocks, saying the policy will raise costs, especially for small farmers and indigenous communities.
01:20In mid-September, Noboa signed an order to end the subsidies,
01:24and his government declared emergencies in several provinces to keep order.
01:28The government says ending the subsidy will save $1.1 billion a year,
01:33with the money already being redirected to small farmers and transport workers.
