00:00A horrible story about a modern-day lynching is going viral, but it didn't actually happen.
00:11The story centers around a young, black college student named Trey Reed, who tragically died
00:17by suicide recently at Delta State University.
00:21During a Monday afternoon press conference on the campus of Delta State University, it
00:25was announced a body of 21-year-old Demartravian Trey Reed of Grenada, a freshman at DSU, was
00:32found hanging from a tree near the pickleball courts not far from the campus cafeteria.
00:39Campus officials, including the head of police, Michael Peeler, who is, it's worth noting,
00:44a black man, maintained from the beginning that there was no evidence of foul play.
00:50The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office performed an autopsy and reached the same
00:55conclusion, ruling the death a suicide.
00:58Yet across TikTok, Twitter, and elsewhere on social media, activists and influencers maintained
01:05and insisted that this was actually a modern-day lynching, a racist hate crime that somehow
01:13shows what's wrong with modern-day Trump America or something.
01:17Now, fake news and misinformation is going viral yet again, with claims a new independent
01:24second autopsy, funded by Colin Kaepernick, somehow proved that this was, in fact, a hate crime.
01:30There's a lot of bias in the autopsy.
01:33Here's one popular TikTok video pushing this claim.
01:36A second independent autopsy funded by Colin Kaepernick revealed blunt force trauma to the
01:41back of Reed's head.
01:42These findings potentially conflict with the initial ruling that his unaliving was self-inflicted.
01:46Meanwhile, a tweet that received more than 2 million views similarly claimed, quote,
01:52they lynched a black man, and if it weren't for Kaepernick paying for a private autopsy,
01:56many would have believed the official statement.
01:59Police lie.
02:00Authority figures lie.
02:02We as people have to demand accountability.
02:05There's just one problem with this whole narrative.
02:08The second autopsy, it does exist, but it hasn't actually been released.
02:13As local fact-checkers at the newspaper, the Clarion-Ledger pointed out, no one knows what
02:19is or isn't in it because the findings haven't been made public.
02:24So all these claims about what's in the autopsy are just baseless speculation or intentional
02:30misinformation.
02:31And for now, all the evidence we have to go by suggests that nothing nefarious happened.
02:36No matter what, of course Trey Reed's death is a tragedy, but it's a shameful disgrace
02:43that so many left-wing influencers and wannabe criminologists would exploit his death to push
02:50a baseless victim narrative and needlessly inflame racial tensions in America just for clicks.
