00:14radiation we're investigating misleading claims many of these kids with autism have high mercury

00:28that's so distressing he's saying that as if this is like real there's nothing real about what he said

00:35how much misinformation is dr tick tock serving up do you think this content crosses that line

00:48tick tock the app made famous by viral videos like this

00:52we can't get enough of the lip-syncing and dance trends

01:03but these days we're also using it for this ivermectin

01:10yeah that's yeah i'm hearing that a lot health hacks and medical advice listen carefully i want to talk

01:16about three things that you can do that are outside the mainstream medical system millions of

01:21people are taking in this content every day but should they be listening to dr tick tock we're testing

01:28it out so we've got a bunch of videos here to go through we want to know how much of that health

01:36information being served up on our screens is actually misinformation

01:50this group of seneca college students say they use tick tock for just about everything

01:55it's like way more quicker and easier and efficient than like browsing through google and going to

02:00different websites you get it so much faster and shorter like direct to the point have you ever

02:08taken any medical advice from a tick tocker i do listen to what they have to say i've changed my entire

02:14skincare routine based on a tick tock video from acne to adhd they call me health they call me stacy

02:25to fertility tips

02:31even diet culture skinny is the outfit being skinny sends a message that's why we're digging into two

02:38health conditions people keep searching for autism and cancer the stakes are high and so is the reach

02:46tick tocks on these two topics get billions of views

02:49we're analyzing 200 videos 100 for autism and 100 for cancer videos serve to us on tick tock when we

02:59search for a therapy treatment or cure i've never heard of that as a treatment for autism testing it the

03:06claims are backed by solid scientific evidence we're gonna have to take that to our medical expert

03:12definitely first up autism we find many tick tock videos about lucavorin a drug making headlines

03:21recently we have also identified an exciting therapy that after u.s secretary of health robert f kennedy

03:27jr announces it can be used to treat autism and it did up to 60 percent of folate deficient children with

03:34asd and if improve verbal communications if given lucavorin to cut through the hype we're turning to dr

03:43melanie penner an autism researcher and pediatrician lucavorin what's the evidence behind it this is

03:53one that is one that is still in evolution so there are actually a couple of scientific trials

04:01and the trials did show some benefits now the reason i'm being cautious both were really small

04:09trials but to me the jury is still out in terms of evidence for for lucavorin dr penner and many

04:18experts warn more research is needed next we find a number of videos that claim some autistic kids

04:26have heavy metals in their bodies in 30 days since i started that detox bath and the metals can be

04:33removed with a bath drops or sprays heavy metals are not a contributor to the presentation that we see

04:42in kids and and the reasons why kids are autistic are not a contributor just want to get that heavy

04:49metals are not a contributor to autism okay so where does that come from i mean what what do you think

04:55that's about much of this comes from the kind of big misinformation event in our field which is the

05:04linking of the mmr vaccine to autism the idea that metals in vaccines or vaccines at all cause

05:13autism has been disproven many times over but it's still out there louder than ever some 40 to 70 percent

05:21of mothers who have children with autism believe that their child was injured by a vaccine misinformation

05:30is not new it's been tim caulfield has been studying and debunking health myths for decades

05:37and he warns the spread of health misinformation is getting worse

05:42a powerful anecdote can shut down our ability to think scientifically especially if the teller

05:50you know we can relate to that person right and think about it that's what tick tock

05:54is the algorithm plays on that it leans into that and it's an extremely effective strategy we see

06:02that with this next tick tock that says changes come after day one of using this calm digestive detox

06:08supplement the account behind this video unravel asd can you unravel autism spectrum disorder whether a

06:20supplement can unravel autism over 24 hours no with just a few clicks we go from this video of promises

06:32to a link to buy the supplement so we do and show tim and when you look at the ingredient list it's

06:40coriander and caprylic capric acid can those things in this bottle improve autism symptoms no like i mean how

06:50what would be the scientific plausibility of of that right um you know zero

06:57we paid 190 canadian for this you're shocked i am shocked i am shocked look i knew it was going to be

07:06exploitive no matter what number you you told me about 190 bucks yeah that's incredible yeah that's

07:14incredible and in the fact that they are they're they're pricing it at that i think speaks to the

07:19reality they know that their customers might be desperate unravel asd tells us the acronym in their

07:25video doesn't actually stand for autism spectrum disorder it stands for autism speech and development

07:33delay they add the product isn't a treatment or cure and that some of their customers just happen to have

07:40autism up next many of these kids with autism have high mercury counts this chiropractor is suggesting

07:49chelation therapy to treat autism it's an iv infusion done with an iv it's supposed to administer chemicals

07:58that bind heavy metals in the body and eliminate them i've had patients in the past before they

08:04got to me who had severe speech delay that made great strides so chelation therapy any evidence it

08:11works no there's no evidence that chelation therapy works can it be harmful it can absolutely be harmful

08:21iv chelation therapy that is recommended in this video can cause the electrolytes the minerals in your

08:30body to shift rapidly and when those rapid shifts happen it can lead to heart rhythm abnormalities

08:40there is a risk of death that comes with these treatments we absolutely recommend against these

08:46treatments there are 760 000 views on this video it makes me really concerned that so many people

08:57are hearing um a bold incorrect and dangerous claim like that

09:11matty dever has heard these kinds of claims before it was something that was recommended for me

09:16as an autistic person and a parent to four autistic children they know firsthand how convincing bad advice

09:23can be when your child gets a diagnosis uh you're probably at the most challenging point in that

09:30journey uh it can be exhausting there's there's so much unknown and there's so many barriers that your

09:37kid faces i feel for parents who are doing these things who are trying these things because they really

09:45want to see their their kids not struggle and in some cases not suffer but then they watch this

09:54chiropractor pushing chelation therapy it makes me angry because we are putting kids at risks and i'm sick

10:02of autistics being the guinea pigs what is it that you want to remove from us we reach out to the

10:09chiropractor in this video no response next up stem cell therapy for autistic children a young girl held

10:19down getting a stem cell injection so we get a treatment on our baby girl it wasn't fun for her but the

10:26results literally the next day i saw a motion all over your face there so when i saw it when i saw that

10:37that kid crying on the table with this ivy putting through them i saw the pain the kid was going

10:42through to getting this treatment and i worry about what the possible negative ramification is how many

10:50kids are going to suffer from that the doctor in this video promises improved communication and

10:58socialization and their quantum leaps up you know the there's a steady progress for six months

11:05and then it holds steady you don't regress there's no benefit for kids who are autistic you know this

11:11is just not something that i would recommend and in fact would really strongly advise against there are

11:17real risks to stem cell therapies in our test we find 14 videos with more than 3 million views

11:25collectively promoting stem cell therapies a lot of these therapies are not cheap you know it can be

11:32thousands of dollars sometimes tens of thousands of dollars it's just you know exploitation you know

11:37times 10. experts say it's risky and unproven but do tiktok users know that back at seneca we show our

11:46students that stem cell video what did you think i think it was quite believable because a doctor was

11:53actually speaking about it so i think it it looks real yes anyone else and they actually show you a

12:00testimonial it's definitely a lot more believable there is no scientific evidence backing up the

12:06claims from this video knowing that seeing the video how does that make you feel a little angry

12:13that this is this can be out there and people see this and they might believe it it makes me a little

12:18furious the parents of the girl in this video tell us the change in her behavior after stem cell treatment

12:26is irrefutable and the doctor doesn't respond of the 100 autism videos we look at 81 feature a treatment

12:35or therapy that isn't backed by solid scientific evidence according to our experts is it surprising

12:42to hear that number i think it's a bit it is a bit surprising and yet i can understand right the emotional

12:48place that this comes from and for those turning to tick tock a word of advice from this autism parent

12:57it won't help your child and it won't help you so find places that can look at autism as a journey

13:05and not as a crisis

13:12coming up cancer cures too good to be true this guy feed cancer without doctors without chemo without

13:18radiation this is complete danger complete danger

13:35we're combing through 200 tick tock videos and find of the 100 autism videos featuring a treatment or

13:42therapy 81 of them include claims that aren't backed by solid scientific evidence according to our experts

13:49it still angers me that you see that level of misleading content tim caulfield says if there's one

13:56disease where unproven treatments are pervasive it's cancer it's a disease that scares us all it's a

14:03disease that's probably touched most of our lives so that's where our test goes next we're investigating 100

14:11tick tock videos that feature a cancer treatment or cure checking if there's scientific evidence behind the

14:17claims glucose which is sugar and that feeds your cancer cells up first cutting out sugar will get rid

14:26of cancer altogether and you will starve the cancer cells so now they will die because they have nothing to eat

14:34and that eating apricot kernels can kill it too i immediately started taking apricot kernels

14:43dr abba gupta is an oncologist treating teens and young adults when people are diagnosed with cancer and

14:50they're young most often people don't have peers that have already gone through that cancer experience so

14:56you could imagine how isolating that is have you had some of your patients come to you with alternatives or

15:03unproven cancer therapy for sure all the time and it is our job as oncologists to then help inform our

15:11patients about what is real and what is not real so is there any truth to the claim that sugar feeds cancer

15:18you will starve the cancer cells so now they won't die because they have nothing to eat who is this guy

15:28a tick tock influencer you know people have said this to me so often but i've never actually seen

15:33it seen the videos and what do you think oh my gosh so just so you know 1.2 million views on that video

15:41over 40 000 likes that's so distressing he's saying that as if this is like real it is there's nothing

15:50real about what he's saying bottom line sugar consumption does nothing to causing cancer to

15:57treating cancer to preventing cancer like this is this is complete danger complete danger when people

16:04come in and say i've stopped eating sugar you know what happens they lose a lot of weight and it is

16:09not good to be losing so much weight when you're embarking on a cancer therapy journey so i say man

16:16what's your favorite dessert go home and eat it today the man in this video tells us he stands by his

16:23claims and what about those apricot kernel claims it says when i was diagnosed with cancer in october 2023 i

16:31immediately started taking apricot kernels black seed oil and soursop tea there was no disease found

16:36the apricot thing is has been around for decades decades right and real again real potential harm i

16:44mean it could lead to cyanide poisoning if you take take too much to be clear tim do apricot kernels cure

16:52cancer no evidence to support that because this is not medical advice tick tock i would never do that

16:58also i am gonna link the apricot seeds right here for you to try them out what do you make of her

17:05disclaimer oh well it's fascinating she's trying to avoid you know the regulatory sanction from from

17:11from tick tock and she it's you in a moment she even spoke to tick tock right this isn't medical

17:15advice tick tock but then here's some medical advice that video has now been taken down but there

17:21are others popping up like it from the same account with direct links to buy the colonel next up a

17:28celebrity endorsement actor mel gibson on joe rogan's podcast i have three friends all three of them had

17:37stage four cancer all three of them don't have cancer right now at all and they had some serious stuff

17:44going on and what did they take ivermectin and then does all our experts take it's complete garbage

17:54if we truly thought that any of these agents had any merit we would be doing clinical trials in them

18:02we would be actually investigating them but there is no merit we ask mel gibson for comment he gives us

18:08a polite pass fembendazole by the way is a dog dewormer and we find eight videos saying it can

18:16treat cancer including this one that doesn't just promote it he beat stage four lung cancer in eight

18:22months you want to know how he did it he actually took a thing called penicure it discredits conventional

18:28treatment we knew no chemo because that killed my mom back in 2014 she had stage four lung cancer as well

18:34well she died not from the cancer but the chemo killed her dimitro samchenko knows the fight that

18:42comes with stage four cancer the 28 year old has ewing sarcoma a rare bone cancer his diagnosis

18:51devastating yeah that it's fourth stage like you know that fourth stage is kind of usually like not

18:59treatable and you realize that you're like in the worst situation ever his chemotherapy and treatments

19:06are grueling but he knows it's his best shot at survival i don't have like chances and time to allow

19:15some not scientifically proven treatment because if it doesn't work i might just die while dimitro doesn't

19:21believe in unproven therapies he understands the desperation of those who do increasingly we're

19:28seeing that these videos can be persuasive right and can pull people away from from approaches that

19:34are are curative of the 100 cancer videos we watch 80 feature a treatment or cure that isn't backed by

19:44solid scientific evidence according to our experts are you surprised by that number well now after you

19:52seeing these i guess i'm not um in fact and i am very worried actually much more worried now than i

20:02ever was before about the misinformation that is out there tick tock says it doesn't allow health

20:08misinformation that could cause significant harm like unproven treatments that may be deadly or

20:14content discouraging professional care for life-threatening conditions

20:18but you see these videos do you think this content crosses that line it does cross that line i don't

20:26think there's any doubt about it no one from tick tock would do an on-camera interview with us or speak

20:31directly to our findings they do say that they take action when content violates their guidelines

20:36and they add when users search for cures or symptoms a notice pops up reminding them not to use

20:42the platform for medical advice and after we reach out to tick tock most of the videos we've shown you

20:48have disappeared these students don't plan to give up tick tock anytime soon but next time they swipe

20:58well show of hands will you second guess videos that you see on tick tock now

21:04will you still use tick tock for health information for those life threatening more serious stuff always

21:16go to the doctor don't trust social media watch mindfully just don't believe what tick tock has
