00:00In a historic ruling, a Paris court sentenced 27-year-old Dabia Benqueret this Friday to life in a prison without the possibility of parole for the rape, the torture and the murder of 12-year-old Lola Davier in 2022.
00:17The first time such a sentence has ever been handed down to a woman in France. The case horrified the nation for its brutality and ignited a fierce political debate after it was revealed that Benqueret, born in Algeria, was undocumented and had been asked to leave the country just two months before the crime.
00:42Throughout the trial, Dabia Benqueret showed no emotion, just as the verdict was read, a chilling contrast to the grief of Lola's family. Lola's mother and brother broke down in tears while the memory of Lola's father, who died last year after relapsing back into alcoholism, lingered over the courtroom. Benqueret has now 10 days to appeal this decision.
