n this bushcraft deep-dive, I explore a true relic of outdoor history โ€” the Soviet-era Plash Palatka. Built for soldiers who needed to survive anywhere, this rugged canvas poncho-tarp has stood the test of time and remains a favourite among serious bushcrafters today.

In this video, youโ€™ll see:
๐Ÿ”ฅ The origins and evolution of the Plash Palatka during the Cold War
๐Ÿ•๏ธ How to set it up as a reliable bushcraft shelter using minimalist gear
๐ŸŒง๏ธ Why old-world craftsmanship still beats many modern synthetics
๐Ÿ‘ฃ Field-tested techniques for real-world survival and off-grid living

This isnโ€™t about fancy gear โ€” itโ€™s about practical, proven tools that keep you alive and comfortable in the wilderness.

00:00Hey, this is Vilko Yak from Barefoot Bushcraft. I want to thank you so much for tuning into this video.
00:04Today we're here to talk about the Russian Flash Payatka, which is basically, it's just a tarp.
00:10Like, literally, that's all it is. It's got a bunch of 90 degree corners. It's just a tarp.
00:14But they've done some things to this tarp to make it a really unique piece of kit, which is great for 21st century bushcraft,
00:22even though this is actually from the Cold War era.
00:24So the first thing the tarp can do is it has all kinds of cool little buttons on it.
00:29And you know that that is Slavic because they looked like little tiny cucumbers.
00:35So how cool is that? That's really awesome.
00:42This is what it looks like when you wear it as a cloak, like this, right?
00:46Kind of looks cool. I kind of wonder, does it sort of make you look, does it make you look a little Jedi with this?
00:52And it has a hood, which is kind of neat.
00:53So if I were to remove my hat here and put this over, it has a sloppy, sloppy hood.
00:59That you can kind of tuck in like this.
01:01Just like that. There we go.
01:03So again, it's sloppy. It's not really designed.
01:07It's designed for the military.
01:08So it's not really designed for us to wear, like, in a non-military environment outside the forest here.
01:14But there we go.
01:15How cool does that look?
01:16And check this out.
01:17It even has, like, the little hole here for your hand.
01:20So there's little buttons you can do up here.
01:24So again, it has those little pickle buttons.
01:26And the pickle buttons go in through here.
01:28You can do them all up.
01:30And you still have a hand free.
01:32I'll demonstrate that.
01:33Here's what it looks like with it all done up.
01:34And you can hold your lightsaber here, like this.
01:39How does it look? Does it look, Jedi?
01:42Because it kind of feels like it when I wear it.
01:52And then again, you know, this was, of course, if you had a firearm on you, you could use it for that.
01:57But that's kind of what it would look like.
01:59Yeah, if you use it as a cloak.
02:02So I definitely have used this as a cloak in bad weather.
02:06So, of course, if it keeps the rain out, it keeps the wind out.
02:10Both work the same interchangeably.
02:12So this is really great under windy conditions.
02:14I can do it all up.
02:15You know, I can still have my cane or my walking stick.
02:19Or if you're a hunter, you're a rifle hanging out.
02:22And here you go.
02:22This is what it looks like.
02:24One of the other great things you can do with a plash palatka, turn it into a shelter.
02:28So let's do that next.
02:29Let's turn this into, like, your emergency bushcraft shelter.
02:33You're going to lay your plash palatka on the ground.
02:35You're going to straighten it all out.
02:36And you see this is the back.
02:38There's a toggle.
02:39I'm going to just take that toggle, undo it, make it nice and square.
02:45So it lays nice and flat on the ground.
02:49There you go.
02:50A couple of things that are going to make my life way easier.
02:53Putting the tarp shelter together is some bank line, paracord, natural cordage, whatever.
02:58This is paracord.
02:59And some metal stakes, if you have them.
03:01If not, I'm in the forest.
03:03I can whittle and create stakes.
03:05But metal stakes will help.
03:07And let's get to it.
03:08So first thing I'm going to do is find my corner.
03:11I'm going to take my stake, because I happen to have aluminum stakes.
03:13I'm going to put it in the ground right there as best as possible.
03:16Now, if I have something to baton it with, I don't know, an axe or a piece of wood.
03:19I mean, I'm in the forest.
03:20I can do that.
03:21But this ground's nice and soft.
03:23Now, I want to find the opposing end, like this.
03:26So that is going to be right there.
03:29So that opposing end over there.
03:32And then we're going to go and pick this up and get it ready.
03:35All right.
03:35So I have that end all staked down.
03:37And this is the opposing end here.
03:39You can see.
03:40You can use whatever is your favorite cordage.
03:43This is paracord.
03:44I'm going to put it, because I trust this grommet, I'm going to put it through the grommet like this.
03:49And then whatever knot you want.
03:50If you like fancy knots, put a fancy knot.
03:53If you can't tie knots, you tie lots.
03:55Okay.
03:55And then I'm going to start to lift this up.
03:57Now, I'm going to take the stick that I found in the forest.
04:00This one has a nice little bit of a crotch on it.
04:03So I'm going to use that crotch as an opposing end, basically, like that.
04:08Now, from here, now we'll get to the next step.
04:18So there you have it.
04:26Plow point shelter.
04:28I'm inside it.
04:29It keeps the wind off as long as the wind is coming from behind me.
04:33It's going to go up over the top.
04:35And basically, that's it.
04:37You can sleep however works for you.
04:39When I sleep in these, I sleep with my face in the back, kind of like this,
04:43just to keep the most amount of stuff off me,
04:45because it doesn't bother me if my feet get wet or cold or anything like that,
04:49because that really doesn't happen.
04:51But that's that.
04:51There's Plow point shelter.
04:53Once again, I want to thank you so much for tuning in to this video.
