Under privilege in the NSW parliament and with the blessing of Cheryl Grimmer's family, MP Jeremy Buckingham identified the suspect known by the pseudonym "Mercury" and read out his confession to police in 1971.

00:05denied justice. The whole truth of this 55-year quest for justice by the Grimmers must be laid
00:12bare and every effort made to remedy this terrible situation. Cheryl and her family cannot and will
00:20not be victims forever and this unacceptable dead end of our criminal justice system cannot remain.
