Spoilers for "Steve" are ahead! Read with caution, and watch the movie with a Netflix subscription.

In "Steve," which is Netflix’s latest 2025 release, Cillian Murphy plays the titular teacher who uses a recorder constantly to keep track of his thoughts and emotions. It’s an effective device, and it gives us a look into this character’s inner monologue. So, when I interviewed the actor who plays him, I asked why he thinks Steve uses his recorder so much, and I also specifically posed a question about the final words he says into it, which led to a pretty personal answer.

00:00the whole time i was trying to figure out like why he wanted to record himself so i was wondering
00:03what you thought his reasoning behind recording himself was and what it meant to him to hear
00:07himself back i think it's just it's sort of a it's to soothe himself really you know he just
00:13doesn't have enough time in the day to do these things so it's like what we do nowadays making
00:18notes on our phones or whatever that's his version of doing but there's also practical he's trying to
00:23bring shoulder up to speed she you know he's one of these people that just never has time to do
00:28anything he's always behind behind behind behind making this making this making this making notes
00:32making notes so it was a really good device for a character yeah and i wrote down the last thing he
00:38says on his recorder is like is it's enough isn't it and that's like one of the last lines of the
00:44movement i thought that was really beautiful so i was wondering what that meant to you when it came
00:48to what was going on with steve that's really interesting because a few people have asked me
00:53like what would you say to yourself in 1996 and because i was starting off as an actor in 96 and
01:00i think that thing of like just it's enough you know you're good enough don't don't beat yourself
01:06up yeah you know be kind to yourself i think that's that's what it feels like to me
