Denise Bacon, a 65-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease, recently played the clarinet while awake on the operating table during brain surgery. Bacon was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2014, and has since lost control over many of her muscle movements, impairing her ability to walk, swim, dance, and play the clarinet. While receiving deep brain stimulation (DBS) for her symptoms, Bacon saw immediate improvement and regained control of her fingers, restoring her ability to play the clarinet. She has since stated that her ability to walk has also improved, along with other nervous system functions that had deteriorated as a result of the disease.
