00:46Rick, you just had Lexi and Micah on, I saw.
00:50I sure did, for those of you who haven't seen them in a long time.
00:52They're still around.
00:54They are still around.
00:56It's amazing how people just don't disappear like that.
00:58It's true, yeah.
00:59So if you want to catch up on what's going on with them, I did a couple of funny segments,
01:03and don't be surprised if you see something with Ashley, too.
01:06Anyways, so today we are doing a movie review.
01:10Jeez.
01:11Of a highly-awaited, once again, they're all highly-awaited, film from Tamil industry called
01:1996, starring Vijay Satapathy.
01:24We've reacted to a song or two from it.
01:26I think it was only one song, The Life of Ram, the one right at the beginning.
01:29And directed by C.
01:35Pram Kumar.
01:37Mm-hmm.
01:37Who, I don't recognize him, but he also wrote it.
01:42And then, also starring Trisha Krishnan.
01:50Trisha Krishnan?
01:50Yes, yes.
01:51Okay.
01:51Trisha Krishnan.
01:52And, obviously, spoiler review, if you haven't seen it, go watch it.
01:56Come back if you don't want to be spoiled.
01:58If you like to be spoiled, you're just a naughty little boy.
02:02And we do encourage you, my mantra is let the movie tell the story.
02:06So if you haven't seen 96, I will tell you, before you watch the spoiler review, highly
02:10encourage you to watch the film first so that it's not ruined and the movie can tell
02:14you the story.
02:15Yes, absolutely.
02:16So, Rick, initial thoughts?
02:17I don't even have a paragraph for this one because I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna, I'm
02:25gonna let it happen contemporaneously.
02:29Oh, oh, oh, and unedited.
02:32That's right, an unedited paragraph.
02:34Um, I found this movie to be a beautifully cinematic, believable, lovely work of cinema
02:49artistry that tapped into so many universal things about love and relationship that ends
02:56on a note that is painfully beautiful by not trying to wrap things up in a bow, but present
03:03to you the realities of what happened when we settle for things in life and also get
03:08stuck in circumstances that we don't know how to handle and have to face the consequences.
03:13Uh, I just, I absolutely love this movie.
03:18Same.
03:19Uh, I, I really, really enjoyed it.
03:21Uh, you know, I love the ending.
03:23Uh, I was wondering the entire time.
03:27Um, I was like, okay, she's married, she has a child in a different country.
03:34Right.
03:35What are they gonna do here?
03:37Are they gonna, are they gonna run off together?
03:39Um, but she has a child, so she can't just fully run off.
03:42She, you know, she has to be there for the child.
03:44What are they gonna do?
03:45What are they gonna, and they kept postponing it, and then it finally happened, and then
03:48it just ended, and I was like, yes.
03:50Thank you for doing that.
03:54Uh, you know, I appreciate those types of endings that are just more realistic, because
03:58this happens all the time.
04:00I'm sure it happens in India.
04:01Yes, it sure does.
04:01It happens lots in India.
04:02Obviously, it happens all over the world, different scenarios.
04:04Obviously, not the arranged marriage in terms of, like, the America, um, but in terms of,
04:09like, people, they get married, they, their love, love interests in, like, high school,
04:14college, and then years pass, years pass, years pass, and then they end up marrying
04:18other people, but they always love that other person, and then they meet later, and then,
04:21so there's, there's, story, this is a very human story, uh, and so I, I really, really
04:28enjoyed that aspect of it, and how, how beautifully, and slowly it told the story.
04:34It wasn't in a hurry.
04:36And I was happy about that.
04:37Yeah.
04:38I, I was so content to just be with them, and watch it unfold.
04:43Yeah.
04:43Uh, I, I was, um, and, and it, it, uh,
04:49I just, I found, first of all, let's just talk about, you know, let's talk about, we
04:53can talk about acting, and directing, and cinematography, and then overall story, you
04:57know, come back to the story, because to me, that's the meat and potatoes of this thing
05:01is the story.
05:02Oh, yeah.
05:02But let's talk about the acting.
05:04Uh, I, I thought, I thought they were both 100%, I believed this was Ram and, and
05:13Janu, I, I believed them, I believed, I thought they did a great job casting them as kids,
05:19both from the way they looked like them younger, but also I thought the, the performance of
05:23the kids was 100% believable.
05:25Yeah, 100%.
05:26Right?
05:27Yeah.
05:27I liked it a lot.
05:28Totally believable.
05:28I thought BJ Satipathy, just like he was in, in, in Super Deluxe, did very, very, very
05:33well.
05:34Um, there's only one instance where I, I questioned it, uh, but the rest of the movie, I loved it.
05:41Uh, I thought he did a phenomenal job.
05:43Uh.
05:44What was the, what was the, what was the instance where you, were you questioned it
05:47for a moment?
05:47I don't know if it was his acting or if it was what they told him to do, and it was just
05:51weird to me.
05:53Uh, when, obviously when he was at the, the party and then he was in the corner and then
05:57she came up to him and then touched him right before he fainted again, right?
06:02Um, he was just doing this, not looking at her and, uh, it was, it was very, it felt very
06:09forced just in that.
06:11Yeah, it didn't feel like the rest of his performance to me.
06:14The rest of his performance seemed so small and grounded and, and I, and I loved it and
06:18that was the only, that's why I was, I didn't know if it was the, the director's like, you
06:22really need to show me here and I'm like, okay, cool, I, I guess, uh, that's your prerogative.
06:28But other than that, like I said, the entire time I loved his performance.
06:32I, uh, I thought he was super grounded.
06:36I was super upset with her for shaving his beard.
06:38I thought he looked awesome with that beard.
06:41You, that would, that would bother you.
06:45No, it bothered my wife too.
06:46Like right when it happened, she's like, now I hate her.
06:48Oh, no, I, I loved it.
06:52I couldn't wait to see him.
06:54I liked the moment.
06:56Uh, I, he looked, he's, he looks, um, he's a very, very attractive man.
07:01Very handsome man.
07:01And with, with a beard and without.
07:03Oh yeah, he is.
07:04Um, but it, that did take like 15 years off of him.
07:08It really did.
07:09And I felt, I thought that was a beautiful thing to put in the story.
07:12And I loved seeing him because I saw the student, um, there and I thought she was lovely.
07:19I just, every moment they were together, I could see the history.
07:23I could sense the depth of feeling.
07:25There were so many beautiful moments in this that were so touching.
07:30Um, little tiny things like when she was sleeping and he just watches her for a minute.
07:35And then we know what this means.
07:36You know what I'm going to refer to?
07:38He prays over her and then he does this and does the, the breaking of it.
07:45You know, we know what that is such a loving, caring, beautiful thing to do to her.
07:50And then the stick shift when they're coming to the airport and putting her hand on his hand.
07:56Um, and I, I obviously, uh, this was extra painful to watch because I know what it feels like.
08:08To have to drive to an airport in India and somebody is going on an international flight
08:13and you're not going to see each other until you don't know when that personal aspect of it was.
08:18Did you cry?
08:20Oh, like a fricking baby.
08:21Really?
08:22You did?
08:23Oh, like a baby.
08:25Yeah.
08:26I cried.
08:26I cried several times in the film and I especially cried the last leg from the moment she put her hand on his stick shift.
08:34I was, I cried from there till the suitcase closed and you saw the credits go up.
08:40I got emotional when I'm, when he pulled that shirt out with the ink on it.
08:45Oh, yeah.
08:48I, yeah.
08:49I cried a lot in this movie.
08:51I didn't not, it's not a shock.
08:53Uh, like, like there was no point where I was like, Oh, almost.
08:59Um, but, you know, that's just me.
09:02That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it and I didn't.
09:05Of course not.
09:06But, uh, I did really enjoy her performance.
09:08I thought she was phenomenal.
09:10Uh, I, she has, she has great screen presence.
09:13Uh, her, her eyes, not as big as a Shwarya's or Shri Devi's, but her, she has beautiful eyes that are captivating.
09:21Uh, and so I like her a lot.
09:25I would like to see more from her.
09:26So if you could recommend both, both obviously VJ and, um, I want to see, I want to see more of his.
09:32He, he has, he has a screen presence and you'll know what I, what I mean when I say this.
09:38Um, he has a screen presence as well as an emotional availability that is, uh, telling.
09:45Yeah.
09:46Uh, in his eyes, he must be a delight.
09:49He must be a delight.
09:50Both of them must be a delight to work with, especially him because he is so emotionally available.
09:57I sense both of them, neither one of them have walls that seem to get in the way.
10:01I never see them indicating.
10:03I never see them performing.
10:04I don't ever see them aware of camera.
10:07I just believe that that's why I would love to see more of their work because, well, we've seen,
10:12we've seen what he can do with these two completely different kinds of roles.
10:17I mean, come on from super deluxe to this.
10:19Yeah.
10:20Completely different characterization.
10:22Yeah.
10:23Deeply impressive.
10:24I liked him a lot.
10:25I loved her a lot.
10:26I thought the supporting cast was pretty good, especially the kids though.
10:29Like you were talking about, I thought the kids did phenomenal.
10:32All the kids did really, really, which is not usually the case.
10:36Correct.
10:37Yeah.
10:37And, and let's just, the other thing that I, I was so deep throughout,
10:42I was so deeply impressed with the symmetry and the lighting and the beauty of the cinematography
10:50throughout.
10:51Yeah.
10:51My, my wife said, uh, that every single frame looked like a photograph.
10:56Every frame.
10:57There was this, there was this mathematical symmetry that comes perfectly, especially in
11:04the opening, which is obviously we had reacted that opening sequence where he's taking the
11:07pictures and right.
11:08But throughout, there were so many just hats off to see Prem Kumar and the cinematographers
11:15Mohandran, uh, Jayaraju and N. Shamuga Sundaram for your attention to detail.
11:23And what I, I would equate to a Spielbergian sense of, uh, making sure every, I can completely
11:33see the painstaking work of getting that in frame and putting the actor and setting the
11:39camera.
11:39And we're going to, we're going to make sure that the lighting is coming in there so that,
11:42and if it isn't exactly right, and it's, it's, um, it has a different aesthetic beauty
11:47than say, uh, uh, Sanjay Lila Bansali.
11:49It's more Spielberg realism kind of thing for me.
11:54Yeah.
11:54Um, so just gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
11:57And then I agree with you as much as I, the optimist, the romantic in me, I really wanted
12:07to see these two together and it hurts so bad that they couldn't be, especially the gorgeousness
12:15of the story where the story weaved in there that how many times he went to try, but then
12:21didn't succeed.
12:23And she was waiting for him to come to the wedding and he actually was there.
12:27Yeah.
12:27Which is the cautionary tale inherent in the story of, Hey, everybody, be brave.
12:36Yeah.
12:38Don't settle.
12:38Did you just say, say what you need to say?
12:40Yeah.
12:41Yeah, absolutely, man.
12:42John Mayer, say what you need to say.
12:44Don't settle.
12:46If, if you love someone, tell them if you take the risk, if you think someone's, if you're
12:52in love with them and you want to be with them, don't let them get away.
12:55Um, show, show up to the wedding and stop it, go to the girl's school and don't accept
12:59no for the answer.
13:01Um, don't, don't let the shame you feel of moving away because your dad lost his job and
13:07you don't have the money distance you from the person that you deep in your heart, believe
13:11you were meant to be with.
13:12And then you look back on your life and go, I'm not with the person I was supposed to
13:15be with because I let fear stop me from doing the thing I wanted to do.
13:19And having her have a child was perfect because that was the deal breaker.
13:25That was because she said, he said to her, are you happy?
13:30And she was honest and said, I'm peaceful.
13:33He's a good man.
13:35Um, but I married him because I settled and I was waiting for you to come stop the wedding,
13:43man.
13:43And I, cause I, I feel like if he, she didn't have a son, she would have totally stayed with
13:48him.
13:49100%.
13:50It's, it's the writing brilliance that, that made that the deal breaker.
13:53She couldn't do that to her kid.
13:55She probably could have said, you know what?
13:57I'm going to just take a risk and I'm sorry if I hurt you, but she couldn't do that to
14:01her child.
14:01And you see that in that moment at the airport, man, when they're standing there and you know,
14:06they want to give each other a kiss.
14:07Yeah.
14:09Yep.
14:10But they don't cause they have too much respect.
14:13He has too much respect for her.
14:15She has too much respect for her husband.
14:17Yeah.
14:17She has too much respect for him.
14:19And so she just touches his face.
14:20Oh, I'm getting emotional again.
14:24That was, that was actually one of my favorite moments.
14:26I thought, cause, uh, you know, it was unexpected the way she just grabbed his face right there.
14:32I, I'm wondering if it was improv'd, I, I guess it could have been, uh, well, I guess we'll
14:38never know unless we talk to her.
14:39Um, but like, it was really, it was such a interesting moment.
14:44And my, my wife, she said, she just doesn't want to see, she doesn't want him to see her
14:48cry is what, is what she's doing.
14:51Uh, and so he grabbed his face, put it down and then walked away.
14:55And I was like, that's, I like that a lot.
14:58Uh, cause you know, it's, it's often, you don't want to seem cliche cause you know, we've,
15:02there's been millions of movies.
15:04It seems like that, you know, leave at the airport kind of things.
15:07And so you've seen, you've seen all the goodbyes before.
15:11Uh, and so it was, it was nice to be surprised in a scenario like that.
15:14And then for the film to just end, I thought it was a beautiful fitting thing, uh, for,
15:20for this, for this film.
15:22So painful, but so right.
15:24Because so often, um, as much as I love and believe we need to see happy endings because
15:30life does have happy endings.
15:32Life also is full of endings that aren't happy and you need to find the happiness in
15:37it and be thankful.
15:38Like at the very end, I found it to be so painfully beautiful that he had another little memory
15:46to put in his box.
15:47I thought it was weird that she just left her clothes.
15:50Clothes.
15:51I was like, what's your, what's your husband going to say?
15:54You're just coming and you come home and you're in another man's.
15:57Oh, another thing to mention is the music of Govind Vasantra, who did the score.
16:04The music was phenomenal.
16:06Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
16:08So good.
16:09I felt like we've heard that singer before, uh, whoever the singers were in this.
16:15Probably, probably have.
16:17And I got, before we forget it as well, um, I really hope we're probably preaching to the
16:23choir when we say this in terms of who's watching this right now, but maybe somebody is watching
16:27this a year or two down the road, right?
16:30As much as we talk about making a bridge between American cinema and Indian cinema and ensuring
16:40that as many Americans can start to appreciate and understand the beauty of Indian cinema.
16:45Oh, Indians, please get past this whole Bollywood, Hindi and regional vivisection and bias that
16:56everybody has because both sides, on both sides, both sides, please support each other.
17:03Consider yourselves one film industry who's doing beautiful work and you're also doing crap.
17:09Nobody's perfect and support each other because there is some beautiful stuff that's coming from
17:15all over India. And for those of you who, you know, you can't please everybody, but I just,
17:23I look forward to the day when everybody in India will celebrate every industry in India because
17:29we continue to be impressed the more we see from every area in India.
17:33Yeah, because, you know, Americans get accused and it's true and it's rightfully so, you know,
17:37you don't watch anything that's not in English because you don't like reading subtitles.
17:40But I feel that's everywhere. It is everywhere. It is everywhere.
17:46I see it in the comments all the time and I block them every single time just because I'm a dick like that.
17:52But like the fact that people like they say, these are the people I will, don't react to Bollywood crap.
17:59It's all crap. Do regional or don't react to anything South Indian. It's all crap.
18:06It's all crap. Right. And so, like, yes, there's crap. There's crap in South India.
18:12There's crap in North India. There's crap in East India. There's crap in South India.
18:15There's crap in Bollywood. There's crap everywhere in Hollywood.
18:19There's also gems everywhere. So support those gems.
18:24Every actor has done bad work. It's some shape or form, maybe not brutally awful, but they've, they've not,
18:31they've done Daniel Day-Lewis. I've seen him do not great work.
18:34Not every director does great films. So this whole, everything that they do sucks and everything
18:40they do is great. That infantile lack of maturity needs to get set off to the side and people need
18:46to start opening their minds to the reality that you're missing out on a blessing in your life by
18:52not opening up to as much of the regions and the languages and the filmmakers as you possibly can,
18:58because all of these regions we've hit, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Barathi, Assam, Bengali, and forgive me
19:06for anybody I didn't mention, we're, we're encountering stuff that's enriching my life and
19:11encouraging me and making me happy to see great actors, great writers, great cinematographers that
19:17more people need to know about. Yeah. Doggone it. So that's our soapbox. Now we'll get off of it.
19:24Um, but let us know, uh, once again, uh, these two actors, what other films of theirs we should
19:30watch. Um, and then also the next Tamil film we should watch. We know we've criminally under watched
19:37Tamil films. It's not been on purpose. I know a lot of people think it is, it's not, uh, you know,
19:44we like good cinema. So, uh, please down below, tell us which film in Tamil we should watch next and
19:51upvote it so I can see it. So, and then I can try to find it as well. Uh, so let us know down below.
19:57Bye.
20:04Bye.
20:06Bye.
20:08Bye.
