00:00Did you study psychiatry in college?
00:02I didn't go to college.
00:04But I read many texts on the subject
00:06and talked to hundreds of people.
00:07Is it true that you oppose psychiatric care in all forms?
00:10I do.
00:11Is it also true that at the age of 14,
00:13you were committed to the Mayview Psychiatric Hospital
00:15in Rhode Island?
00:16Objection.
00:17Mr. Lord is not on trial here.
00:19His views on psychiatry are part of the record.
00:21The people have a right to explore their basis.
00:23I'll allow it.
00:25I was committed by my parents against my will.
00:27They forced you to take drugs, just
00:29like Jamie Hoskins' parents are forcing her.
00:33That's right.
00:34But it wasn't just drug therapy that they gave you,
00:36was it, Mr. Lord?
00:40No.
00:42What other treatments were you given at Mayview?
00:46ECT.
00:47You please tell the jury what that stands for?
00:50Electroconvulsive therapy.
00:51Also known as electric shock therapy.
00:53Isn't that right?
00:56They strap you down to a special table that flips over,
00:59so that you don't choke on your own vomit.
01:03Then they inject you with a muscle relaxant.
01:06Then they tape electrodes to your forehead,
01:08and then turn up the juice.
01:10When your toe starts twitching, that means you're having a major
01:14convulsion, which is what they want.
01:18It's what they call healing.
01:22Why did they perform this procedure?
01:28Because they said I was a psychotic depressive.
01:32And in fact, didn't you attempt suicide three weeks prior to your parents committing you?
01:37It was a mistake.
01:39You took enough pills to cause permanent brain damage.
01:42And the cure for that was for them to pass huge amounts of electric current through my brain.
01:47ECT fried my memory.
01:51Huge chunks of my childhood gone.
01:54It was painful, dehumanizing torture.
01:57I'll never know how much damage they did to me.
02:06That sounds like a terrible ordeal.
02:10But tell me, after you got out of the hospital, did you ever attempt suicide again?
02:19No.
02:19And now you're a rich, successful musician with millions of fans?
02:24Isn't it possible that psychiatry didn't ruin your life?
02:29It saved it.
