00:00A court in Slovakia has sentenced the man who shot and injured Prime Minister Robert Vito to 21 years in prison on terrorism charges.
00:09The verdict was delivered on Tuesday by one of Slovakia's specialized criminal courts.
00:15The 72-year-old would-be assassin targeted the populist Slovak leader in May last year as he was departing a government meeting.
00:23The meeting had been held in Handlova, around 140 kilometers north of the capital, Bratislava.
00:31Vito was shot in the abdomen and rushed to hospital to undergo an emergency operation, which was successful.
00:38The attacker, who refused to testify during the trial, previously said he targeted the Slovak premier because he disagreed with his policies and pro-Russian stance.
00:49He noted that he did not intend to kill Vito and was only aiming to injure him, adding that he was relieved to hear of his survival.
