00:00my story begins in a beautiful place called swat valley in pakistan it was a land of tall mountains
00:08green fields and clear rivers i loved my home i lived with my mother my father and my two younger
00:15brothers my father ziao dean was a teacher who ran his own school he believed that education was a
00:21right for every child whether they were a boy or a girl from a very young age he taught me to love
00:26learning i would often wander into the empty classrooms after school pretending to be a
00:30teacher myself writing on the board and giving speeches to the empty chairs my dream was simple
00:36i wanted to go to school learn about the world and one day become a doctor or a politician
00:41my childhood was filled with the sounds of laughter and the joy of discovery school was my favorite
00:47place in the whole world it was where i saw my friends where i read books that took me to far
00:52away lands and where i learned that my voice had power my father always encouraged me to speak my
00:58mind he would listen to my thoughts on everything from politics to the stories i read he saw the fire
01:04in me and never tried to put it out he told me malala you are free as a bird this freedom to learn and to
01:13speak was the most precious gift i had a gift i believed every girl deserved to have as well
01:18but then darkness began to fall over my beautiful valley in 2007 when i was only 10 years old a group
01:27called the taliban started to take control they had very strict and harsh rules they said that women
01:34should not go to the market they said music was a sin and then they announced the one rule that broke
01:39my heart they said that girls were no longer allowed to go to school i could not understand it how could
01:46anyone take away something so fundamental so important my books and my pen were my most prized
01:52possessions the thought of losing my education felt like losing a part of myself i remember the fear
01:58that spread through our town people were afraid to speak out but in our home my father taught us that
02:04silence in the face of injustice is not an option he continued to speak out for education inspired by his
02:11courage i knew i had to do something too i was just a young girl but my dream for education was bigger
02:17than my fear i started to speak in public at local press clubs and on television about our right to
02:23learn i even started writing a secret blog for the bbc under a different name ghoul makai i wrote about
02:29my life under the taliban my fears and my unwavering hope to return to my classroom
02:34my voice once a small whisper started to grow louder people in pakistan and even around the
02:43world began to hear about the girl in swat valley who was fighting for her education my identity as
02:49the bbc blogger was eventually revealed and i continued to speak openly i felt that if one
02:55person could speak up it might give courage to others to do the same my father stood by my side
03:00a constant source of strength he received threats and people warned him that my speaking out was
03:05dangerous they said he should protect me by keeping me silent and hidden at home but he always said
03:12how can i stop her this is her right the danger was very real the taliban did not like that a young
03:20girl was challenging their authority they saw my words as a threat to their power they wanted to silence me
03:27forever on october 9th 2012 my life changed in a single moment i was on the school bus heading home after an exam
03:36chatting with my friends about our plans suddenly the bus stopped a man with a gun came on board and asked
03:44who is malala no one said anything but some eyes turned toward me he raised his gun and fired the bullet went
03:52into my head everything went dark i did not know it then but my friends were also hurt in the attack
03:58the men who attacked me thought they could silence my voice and end my fight they thought a bullet could
04:03kill a dream but they were wrong what they did was the opposite of what they wanted the news of the attack
04:10spread across the globe like a wildfire people everywhere from small villages to big cities came out to
04:16protest they held up signs that said i am malala they prayed for my recovery the attack did not create
04:24fear it created a wave of support and anger against injustice it showed that the world was watching and
04:30that people cared deeply about a girl's right to go to school my journey to recovery was long and
04:37difficult i was flown from pakistan to a hospital in birmingham england i woke up in a strange room in a
04:44strange country far from my home i could not see properly i could not speak clearly and i had a
04:50terrible pain in my head i was confused and scared but when my parents finally arrived and i saw them
04:56i knew i was not alone i learned about the incredible support from people all over the world i received
05:04thousands of cards and gifts this love from strangers gave me strength i knew then that i had been given a
05:10second life and i had to use it for a purpose my recovery was a miracle but it was also a new
05:19beginning the taliban had tried to take my life but they had only made my voice stronger the world was
05:25now listening on my 16th birthday i stood before the united nations and gave my first speech since the
05:30attack i was nervous but i looked out at the room full of world leaders and knew i was not just speaking
05:37for myself i was speaking for the millions of girls around the world who are denied an education
05:42i told them one child one teacher one book and one pen can change the world that day i promised myself
05:52in the world that i would dedicate my life to this fight with the help of my father i co-founded the
05:58malala fund our mission is simple but powerful to create a world where every girl can learn and lead
06:05we work in countries where it is hardest for girls to go to school places like nigeria afghanistan and
06:11brazil we support local activists and educators who are doing amazing work on the ground just like
06:17my father did in swat valley we help build schools provide resources and advocate for laws that protect
06:23girls rights i've traveled to many places and met so many brave girls who face incredible challenges
06:29just to get an education their stories inspire me every single day to work even harder in 2014
06:35when i was 17 years old i received the nobel peace prize i was in my chemistry class at school in england
06:42when my teacher told me the news i was so honored and humbled to become the youngest person ever to
06:47receive this award i shared it with an amazing activist from india kailash satyarthi who also fights
06:53for children's rights for me the prize was not just for me it was for all the children whose voices are
06:59not heard it was a message to the world that the fight for education and peace is the most important
07:05work we can do it gave me an even bigger platform to spread our message even as my public work continued
07:11i also wanted to continue my own education it was the very thing i had fought for and i never wanted
07:17to lose sight of that i finished my school in birmingham and then went on to study at the university of
07:22oxford a dream i had held for a long time it was important for me to have the experience of being
07:28a student to make friends to worry about exams and to find my own way my journey has shown me that
07:35education is a lifelong process it is not just about what you learn in books but about how you grow as a
07:41person and how you use your knowledge to help others
07:44my journey has been long and it is far from over today as a young woman i continue this fight with
07:53more hope than ever before i have written books to share my story and the stories of other displaced
07:58girls i use social media to connect with young people and show them that activism can be part of
08:04their lives too as i revealed in my new memoir mine should a person bring parts white which was just
08:11released my path has also included personal struggles like dealing with the trauma of my past
08:16and learning to take care of my mental health it is important to be strong for the world but it is
08:21also important to be kind to yourself this is also a part of the journey looking back i see a young girl
08:28in swat valley who loved school more than anything i see a girl who was shot but refused to be silenced
08:34and i see a global movement that was born from a single voice my story is not unique because of
08:40what happened to me it is the story of millions of girls who are fighting the same battle every single
08:45day they are the true heroes they face poverty war and discrimination yet they wake up each morning
08:51with the hope of going to a classroom they are the reason i continue my work through the malala fund
08:56and why i will never give up the lesson i have learned is one that i want to share with everyone
09:01especially young people you have a power inside you that is greater than you can imagine
09:06your voice matters it does not matter how old you are where you are from or what your background is
09:13when you see something that is wrong or unjust do not be afraid to speak up you might think your
09:18voice is too small to make a difference but when many small voices join together they become a roar
09:24that cannot be ignored change does not happen overnight but it starts with one person deciding to take
09:30a stand for what is right let us all be the ones who believe in the power of our voices let us be the
09:37ones who support each other and lift each other up let us build a world where every child can go to
09:43school without fear where every girl can dream as big as she wants and where every person is treated
09:48with dignity and respect the world can be a better place and the change begins with us it begins with
09:54the belief that one person one idea and one action can truly change the world let us pick up our books
10:00our pens they are our most powerful weapons
