00:00Good afternoon everyone, hope everyone's well. We'll kick off with the As Live section, then we'll go into a 10.30 in Vargo UK tonight.
00:19If you've got your headsets, there might be a couple of questions in English and Spanish, so if you need that proper language, please do put your headsets on.
00:27If we're all ready, we'll kick off with Alex from the BBC.
00:30Hi Michael, a couple of days since the win over Fulham at the weekend, how pleased are you with that victory and mentality you showed to get on the line?
00:38Well, very happy obviously, and especially after international breaks when you know that you have to again align and regroup everybody,
00:45and you could tell that in the first 10 minutes that we were a bit still getting that rhythm, but afterwards I think watching the game back that we deserve to win the game,
00:54there are things to improve, but we take the win and we move on now for the Champions League match.
01:00And just a question on the fitness period, who trained before the Champions League, but wasn't in the squad, saw him on the pitch earlier, is he available for tomorrow?
01:09Yeah, he will be available, and I think that game came a bit too early for him, so he had another two very good sessions, and now he's ready to go.
01:17Coming up against Diego Simeone, tomorrow, he's one of the world's best managers, how highly do you rate him?
01:25Well, at the highest level, I mean, I think what he's done since he got to Atletico has been outstanding.
01:32Not only what he has achieved, but the way he's done it, I think the identity that he has created to the club, to the team, the spirit,
01:40I think they are very simple and clear to identify, and that's because the manager is very much them.
01:48And that's extremely difficult to achieve for a short period of time, and to do it for 14 years, I think he's been there now.
01:55It's something incredible, so, yeah, a pleasure to meet him.
01:59After the match, there was a picture that went around of William Saliba on the team coach, you were already watching Atletico Madrid.
02:06How did that come about, and how pleased are you to see your players already turning on to the next big shot?
02:11Very pleased because I didn't encourage it, so it came from them, and that's the most powerful thing,
02:16that a game finishes, the job is done, and we've done it, but now, okay, what's next, and what's the next challenge,
02:22and what's the next opportunity, and we know that it's going to be a really tough one,
02:26so the earlier we start to think about it and prepare, the better, so I love that initiative from the players,
02:31and it tells you how much they want it and how focused they are in what is next.
02:37Damesh from Sky.
02:39Hi.
02:39Hi.
02:40You mentioned Diego Simeone there, approaching 14 years, you're approaching six years at Arsenal.
02:46Do you look at Simeone as maybe an inspiration and maybe something that you'd like to do
02:51at this club?
02:53Well, obviously, there is someone that I look up to and learn from it in many situations,
02:59and what is, for me, outstanding is his passion.
03:04I think for how long he's been in the game and in the same club with the same players,
03:08how you still have that handle and that capacity to transmit such an energy and willingness to win,
03:15and then, yeah, it's a very tough environment that we live in,
03:17and to keep convincing players, you have to be extraordinarily well.
03:21I don't know him personally, but everything that I heard about him is that he's so good at doing that.
03:25That's one of the reasons why you are able to sustain at that level.
03:30He's been linked with the Premier League on numerous occasions.
03:35Is he someone you'd like to see come to the Premier League?
03:37He's going to get tougher.
03:39We have enough and super good managers here, so I don't know.
03:43That will be completely up to him in one day.
03:45He wants to experience that.
03:47What I can say is that what I've seen and after analyzing the team,
03:53how well they are coached.
03:54Just reflecting on your last three games in the Premier League,
03:58there's one point from those three games last season.
04:01You've got nine out of nine this time.
04:04What's changed and what lessons have you learned,
04:07not just from those games, but from last season?
04:10Well, we have to obviously get as much information as we can
04:13and understand the reasons why we dropped some points there
04:16and then try to implement them.
04:18But to be fair, sometimes from a draw to a win,
04:21there are details and things that have to go your way.
04:25But it's true that the team shows a different kind of maturity,
04:28threat and probably conviction at this stage.
04:33But it's still very early.
04:35We have to do it now for another 30 games
04:37and that's going to be the objective.
04:39You say it's very early.
04:41The bookies have already made you the favourites for the title.
04:46You embrace that and do you think you are the favourites?
04:49The only thing that I embrace is when I see the team,
04:53the energy, the temperature, the commitment
04:55and the quality that they can deliver,
04:57that it gives me that conviction that we can go all the way.
05:01But that's it.
05:02That's just a feeling that the next day you have to prove it,
05:04the next training session you have to prove it
05:06and nothing else and we cannot be busy thinking about those topics.
05:11Silent Standard.
05:12Just to carry on with Simeone,
05:15when you started here,
05:16did you look at the way Atletico,
05:18how he moulded the club's culture and his image
05:20and you took from that something you wanted to do
05:22when you tried to mould the culture here?
05:24No, I think I got that done more through my experiences
05:28and my beliefs
05:30and especially my understanding of Arsenal
05:33and this football club I have experienced here
05:35because I think to put a different context to this one
05:39is extremely difficult
05:40and at the end I think you have to be authentic
05:42to your belief,
05:43your way of dealing with people especially,
05:46which is the most important thing
05:48when you talk about culture
05:50and slowly you have an idea
05:52and you have to after through that
05:55sometimes change a little bit the trajectory
05:57to understand what is the best for the club.
06:00I just wanted to ask you one on the defence.
06:01Obviously the numbers have been incredible this season.
06:04We've seen Gabriel Heinzer who joined in the summer.
06:07We've seen a lot of the warm-ups
06:08and working for the defenders,
06:09very animated.
06:11What's he sort of brought to the defence this season
06:13and what's he like as a coach
06:14that he's added to yourself this year?
06:16Well, I think that's something
06:17very, very collective
06:19with all the coaches,
06:20with the players,
06:21with their commitments as well
06:23and Gabby added something different
06:24that willingness to will, I think.
06:29And now we've seen that
06:30obviously through his career,
06:33that experience
06:33to win
06:34and to elevate
06:35somebody's level
06:36and ambition
06:37and drive
06:38to the highest limit
06:40and he's extraordinary at that.
06:42Tom, football on time.
06:43Michael, of course,
06:44one of your main title rivals
06:45the weekend failed to win
06:47against Manchester United.
06:48Do you ever notice
06:49on the training field
06:50after one of your main rivals
06:51has failed to win
06:52that your players perhaps
06:53have a bit more
06:54of a spring in their step
06:55during a training session?
06:56I haven't noticed that
07:01but obviously there is
07:02a lot of narrative afterwards
07:04but that's it.
07:05I mean, every game
07:06in this league
07:07it's a must-win
07:09and a very difficult
07:11game to win
07:13and we all, I think,
07:14very appreciative of that
07:15so you don't get carried
07:16away with any of that.
07:17And just on Diego Simeone
07:19as well,
07:19when you come up
07:19against a manager
07:20who's been in place
07:20for such a long period of time
07:22does that in any way
07:23make your preparation
07:24for perhaps what you might
07:25expect for them easier
07:26or because there's so much
07:28data and so much evidence
07:29does that in some ways
07:30make it harder
07:30to prepare for a game?
07:33Well, on this one
07:34I think the hardest thing
07:36is the time
07:37that you have
07:37basically a day
07:39when you can't really
07:40do much to prepare that
07:42obviously understanding
07:43and the timing
07:44that we have spent
07:44to analyze them
07:45and understand that
07:46they have evolved as well
07:47for the team
07:47that they were probably
07:48a year ago
07:48to now
07:50and how they can change
07:51as well in relation
07:53to the context
07:54of the match
07:54which is something
07:56very specific
07:56for this team
07:57and in order to
07:58prepare the best way
08:00you want to give them
08:01everything
08:02but how you're able
08:02to simplify the information
08:04and make it
08:05as concrete
08:06as clear as possible
08:07for being in the best
08:09position
08:09to implement
08:10what we want to do
08:11tomorrow
08:11Well, first of all
08:23the willingness to win
08:24you can sense that
08:25in every single ball
08:26in every single yard
08:27the way they play
08:29so it's about
08:30how they compete
08:30and then after
08:31how they play
08:32and I think
08:33there are two
08:33very different things
08:36and in order
08:37to after analyze
08:38what they are
08:39the level of organization
08:40is really high
08:42the level of discipline
08:42is really high
08:44and then they have
08:45acquired quite a lot
08:46of talent
08:46throughout the years
08:47that are very specific
08:48for the needs
08:49and the way
08:50they want to play
08:51and they are very
08:52very good at exploiting
08:53those opportunities
08:54well if you work
09:05in the Champions League
09:06which is the highest
09:06competition in Europe
09:07he can do it anywhere
09:09and I don't know
09:11you have to come here
09:12and try it
09:13and fill in
09:14but I'm very sure
09:16that his know-how
09:17is unbelievable
09:17and his character
09:19and willingness
09:19will take him
09:20anywhere I think
09:21can you just talk
09:27a bit about
09:27the work that goes
09:28into maintaining
09:29that threat
09:30because you've been
09:30good at it
09:31it's not a fluke
09:32it's been two
09:33three years
09:34where new routines
09:36come
09:36the unpredictability
09:37is always there
09:38can you just talk
09:39a bit about
09:39the work that goes
09:40into maintaining
09:41that over such a long
09:41period
09:42well keep evolving
09:43and keep improving
09:44it's a thing
09:46it's a system
09:46that when you put
09:47it in place
09:48the system
09:49has to learn
09:50every single day
09:52every single game
09:53to become better
09:54and that's in relation
09:56to the players
09:57that we have
09:57and what we learn
09:58from ourselves
09:59and as well
09:59what we learn
09:59from the opposition
10:01and try to be
10:02as consistent
10:03as possible
10:04in order to do that
10:05you have to give
10:05importance to certain
10:06topics to become
10:07really important
10:08and we try to do that
10:10in the way
10:10that we share
10:11the time
10:11and the focus
10:13in game preparation
10:14and then
10:15it's delivery
10:16that experience
10:31I mean
10:32somebody tells you
10:33if you do that
10:34you're going to be successful
10:35and you know
10:36that he's done it
10:37and he's been successful
10:37it's a lot of credibility
10:39there
10:40and how the players
10:41react to him
10:41he's obviously
10:42a very passionate
10:43person
10:44also I don't know
10:45but what
10:45it's a question
10:48for me
10:49my feeling
10:49is that they already
10:50love him
10:50which is normal
10:51but the rest
10:52of the coaches
10:53is the same
10:54they are all
10:54very different
10:55characters
10:56but the relationship
10:57and the bond
10:57that we have
10:58with the players
10:58I think it's unique
11:00and I think
11:00that's something
11:01very very powerful
11:02in a team
11:03I think we'll take
11:04a few questions
11:05in Spanish now
11:05Spanish in fact
11:06or whatever
11:06yeah
11:07si
11:07yeah
11:07si yeah
11:08Miquel
11:10hello
11:11I want to ask you
11:13a little bit
11:14about the
11:15summer
11:16of 2024
11:16when they were
11:18Miquel
11:19and the two
11:21of the Atlético
11:22and Asia
11:22how can you
11:23tell us
11:24that Miquel
11:25at the end
11:25of the
11:27at the end
11:27no lo sé
11:29yo puedo
11:30hablar
11:30de lo que
11:30de lo que
11:31intentamos
11:32transmitirle
11:32a Miquel
11:33de lo que
11:34queríamos hacer
11:34del proyecto
11:35del rol
11:35que iba a tener
11:36con nosotros
11:36y porque creíamos
11:37que para él
11:38era un lugar
11:39ideal
11:40donde se iba
11:41a sentir
11:41feliz
11:42y realizado
11:43con las calidades
11:43que tiene
11:44luego los demás
11:45obviamente
11:45había rumores
11:46de muchos equipos
11:47al final
11:48tomó la decisión
11:49de venir aquí
11:50nosotros
11:50felices
11:51yo siempre
11:56intento
11:56conocer todo
11:57sobre el jugador
11:58no solo eso
11:58sino su entorno
11:59también
11:59pero creo que
12:00igual que yo
12:01todos los entrenadores
12:02Miquel
12:05me gustaría preguntarte
12:06por Gabriel Magalhães
12:08porque no hay
12:10jugador
12:10con tantos minutos
12:11en esta temporada
12:12por Arsenal
12:13y dos viajes
12:15muy largos
12:16para él
12:16contra el Brasil
12:17llegó
12:18poco contra Fulham
12:19¿qué rol
12:20que el papel
12:21de Wideranska
12:23Gabriel
12:24tiene hoy?
12:24para nosotros
12:26es un jugador
12:27fundamental
12:27uno de nuestros
12:28capitanes
12:28y creo que
12:29se lo ha ganado
12:30a pulso
12:31creo que hay un ejemplo
12:32muy bueno
12:32aparte de los viajes
12:34que hizo
12:34y del esfuerzo
12:35que hizo
12:35para estar
12:36el día del Fulham
12:37en las mejores condiciones
12:38que empezó el partido
12:40sin ser su mejor versión
12:41y a partir de ahí
12:43cómo creció
12:43y eso demuestra
12:45madurez
12:45demuestra
12:46mucha personalidad
12:47y al final
12:48influye en el resultado
12:49de una manera
12:49muy importante
12:51con el cabezazo
12:52que pone
12:52en el gol de Leo
12:54has hablado bastante
12:56en inglés
12:56de Simeone
12:57pero quería preguntarte
12:58por esos puntos
12:59en común
12:59y diferencias
13:00entre el proyecto
13:01que ha creado Simeone
13:02en el Atlético de Madrid
13:03y lo mismo
13:05que has hecho tú
13:06aquí en el Arsenal
13:07no lo sé
13:09porque hay que conocer
13:10muchos detalles
13:10la percepción mía
13:12es de admiración
13:13y el nivel de consistencia
13:15a nivel
13:16de resultados
13:17de identidad
13:18de trabajo
13:19lo que transmite
13:20tanto el club
13:21como el equipo
13:21durante tantos años
13:22es algo
13:23de una dificultad
13:24tremenda
13:26y me imagino
13:28porque él es muy bueno
13:28porque estará rodeado
13:29de gente
13:29muy buena alrededor
13:31y porque al final
13:33ha inculcado
13:34dentro del club
13:34esa mentalidad
13:36que se sostiene
13:37en el tiempo
13:38Llegáis líderes
13:43solo tres goles
13:43encajados en Premier
13:44en Champions
13:45también no habéis
13:46encajado goles
13:47dentro de la temporada
13:48y esperéis una vez
13:48contra el Liverpool
13:49o si el equipo
13:50llega en el mejor momento
13:50para acercarse al Atlético
13:52Creo que estamos
13:53en un momento bueno
13:54pero luego vamos a enfrentarnos
13:55a otro rival
13:56que nos va a exigir muchísimo
13:57y mañana vamos a
13:58tener que demostrar
13:59que estamos
13:59en el mejor momento
14:01y al final
14:01esto va de
14:02lo que viene después
14:03sabemos el rival
14:05que vamos a tener delante
14:06tenemos perfectamente claro
14:08por lo que queremos hacer
14:09y la dificultad de ello
14:10pero el estado emocional
14:12del equipo
14:12ahora mismo
14:12es bueno
14:13¿Qué tal?
14:16Miguel
14:17Preguntando que Atlético
14:20Madrid es un colectivo
14:20y que tal vez
14:21desde el envío anímico
14:22cambió a partir del derbi
14:24pero un jugador relevante
14:26y no hay que ser brujo
14:27pero Julián Álvarez
14:29¿Qué nos puede decir
14:29un jugador futbolista
14:30como Julián Álvarez
14:31que está dando
14:32un nivel superlativo
14:34para aparecer
14:35en esta temporada
14:35en específico?
14:36Bueno
14:36tiene uno
14:37tiene varios
14:38has puesto uno
14:38en particular
14:40que hemos visto
14:41lo que ha hecho
14:41porque lo teníamos
14:42muy cerquita
14:42aquí en Manchester
14:43hace muy poquito
14:45y lo que ha hecho
14:45con la selección
14:46está claro
14:47al final
14:47para competir
14:49y para alcanzar
14:50el nivel
14:50que han alcanzado
14:51ellos
14:52a nivel individual
14:53necesitas jugadores
14:54que marquen
14:55la diferencia
14:55y ellos
14:57tienen varios de esos
14:58que han alcanzado
15:02que han alcanzado
15:03en el caso
15:04que pasó
15:06por el Arsenal
15:07sin beneficiar
15:08por un equipo
15:09de Madrid
15:09este verano
15:09podríamos hablar
15:10algo similar
15:11a Martín
15:12Dubimendi
15:12que llega
15:13al Arsenal
15:14este verano
15:14también
15:15pudiendo tener
15:16la posibilidad
15:16del Real Madrid
15:17que estamos
15:18interesados
15:18en él
15:19primero
15:20como convencer
15:21en el caso
15:22de que pasó
15:23Dubimendi
15:23¿cómo valoras
15:27su llegada
15:27a Premier?
15:28porque siempre se habla
15:29mucho
15:29de la necesidad
15:30de adaptación
15:31que tiene esta liga
15:31pero parece que
15:32Dubimendi
15:33estaba hecho
15:33para jugar
15:34en este Arsenal
15:35y si es
15:36la pieza
15:37que le faltaba
15:37a este equipo
15:38para terminar
15:38de funcionar
15:40yo creo que
15:42más que convencer
15:43al final
15:43es transmitir
15:44la idea
15:44que tenemos
15:44con él
15:45el por qué
15:46creemos
15:46que es el jugador
15:47ideal para nosotros
15:48y el contexto
15:49que él se va a encontrar
15:50al final
15:50es una decisión
15:51muy personal
15:52creo que el mayor
15:52poder que tenemos
15:53como club
15:54es nuestra historia
15:55y lo que transmite
15:56y a partir de ahí
15:57nosotros le tenemos
15:58que dar matices
15:58para que se imagine
15:59una vida
16:01alrededor nuestro
16:02y a Martín
16:04lo vi enseguida
16:04convencidísimo
16:05de que quería venir
16:06y que se sentía
16:09lo que le tratábamos
16:10de transmitir
16:11que él se lo sentía
16:12y luego es verdad
16:13lo que has dicho
16:13sobre todo
16:14por esa posición
16:14y yo he visto
16:15muchos venir
16:15durante más de 20 años
16:17a esta liga
16:17y es una posición
16:18muy difícil
16:19donde asentarse
16:20porque
16:21no es una cuestión
16:22solo de jugar
16:22es una cuestión
16:23de rol
16:23de jerarquía
16:24es una posición
16:25que requiere
16:26muchas cosas
16:26y creo que Zuby
16:28lo ha hecho
16:28de manera muy rápido
16:29ganándose el respeto
16:30de todos
16:31y sintiendo
16:32esa parte
16:33muy cómodo
16:34desde muy pronto
16:35cosa que es muy difícil
16:36que es muy difícil
16:37que es muy difícil
16:38que es muy difícil
16:39I'll go to a few for 10.30 tonight.
16:42Kick off with Jonathan in there.
16:43Hello.
16:44Hi.
16:45You've spoken a lot about Diego Simeone,
16:47and we all know what a passionate guy he is.
16:50I'm sure you saw what happened at Anfield with the crowd.
16:54And I just wonder, on a managerial level, manager to manager,
16:58how difficult it must be at some time when you're on the top of it
17:01not to react, particularly when the crowd's right on top of you
17:05and there must be a test.
17:06It is as well, because you are defending your club and your players
17:11and you know that small details can define at the end
17:15whether you win a match or not.
17:17And we are there, leaving it with high emotions
17:22and very difficult to control.
17:24And you see various, sometimes when we get really upset,
17:27sometimes really high, we start to run with our players
17:29and celebrating goals.
17:31I think it's something natural.
17:33I think it has to be understood when it's done in a respectful way.
17:38As always, and from my experience,
17:41I think over the years, try to be a little bit calmer,
17:45but there are moments that are always not easy.
17:48We know also what passionate guy you are, as you're saying.
17:51Has that arguably been one of your toughest challenges?
17:55I mean, you're known as being quite successful on the top side
17:59and you're the most respectful one,
18:00but equally, has that been one of the hardest things
18:03about keeping it together?
18:05Yeah, especially the side that it doesn't give you much
18:08and it can take things to you or for the team,
18:11especially when you react in a way that is not necessarily good.
18:15I think we have that responsibility as well
18:17to live with an example and sometimes I've done it.
18:21I've made mistakes on that.
18:23So try to learn from there
18:24and try not to do them again.
18:27Dave?
18:28I wanted to talk to you about Samir,
18:30you mentioned the clear identity that this team has got.
18:35I'm just wondering, in your own words,
18:36if you can expand a little bit on what that identity means to you.
18:40Well, if I have to use it in various words,
18:43it's the willingness to win, you know.
18:45And then after that drives everything probably.
18:49Their methodology, the way they live,
18:50the way they behave, the way they act in everything
18:55and the purpose that they have,
18:57which is at the end to win.
18:58And they find a way to do it
19:00and they've changed a lot of players
19:01and they changed and the competition in Spain has increased
19:05and they have two very big clubs
19:06and they've always been there.
19:08And that's something that is driven by their mentality
19:11and their passion.
19:13And after that, yeah,
19:14there are a specific thing in the way,
19:16in my opinion, that he sees the game
19:17and he tries to encourage his teams to play
19:20that are more specific.
19:21But the main thing, I think, I would say is that.
19:23I would also say,
19:24just listening to you talk about this Atletico team
19:27and Samir,
19:28you could always be talking about your own team.
19:31Is that a fair comment?
19:33Do you see that parallel
19:34between what you're saying about him
19:35and what you've seen in your own team?
19:38I don't know.
19:39I don't know from the outside.
19:40I'm looking from my side.
19:41I don't have the detail there.
19:43They have won as well some major trophies.
19:45They've been in Champions League finals.
19:47They have made other steps there
19:49when it was really important to make that step.
19:52We need to do that
19:53and we are on the journey to try to achieve it.
19:56Sam?
19:57Three goals conceded in the full season.
19:59Why is the defence so good?
20:03Well, for many reasons,
20:05but obviously because collectively
20:07we acknowledge the importance of that.
20:10We feel it.
20:11We know that if we accept that part of the game,
20:15the chances and the probability to win full match
20:17is going to be very, very high for us.
20:20And I try to implement it
20:22and then try to be consistent.
20:25That buy-in from the forward players too,
20:27is that what kind of sets the tone?
20:29I think so, yeah.
20:30Because if there's not that connection,
20:32it's very impossible.
20:33Because in football,
20:33you don't get to choose
20:34which actions I do defend
20:35and which actions I don't.
20:38Because the ones that you don't want
20:39in the Premier League,
20:40in the Champions League,
20:41is enough to lose a match
20:42or to concede a goal.
20:45And then, yeah,
20:45rely on them
20:46and have very good players.
20:47It's very important as well.
20:48Is that something you think
20:49that you have to instill
20:51in the players
20:52in your time
20:53over the course of the years?
20:56I don't know.
20:57I try to do it.
20:58So they really feel it
20:59that they don't do it
21:00like the Saliba example
21:01because we tell them to do it.
21:03I think when you are able
21:03to really put it
21:05in the players' veins
21:06and DNA,
21:07I think it's much more powerful.
21:09And finally to Charlie.
21:10Well, the details of that,
21:38not much
21:38because it was a different
21:40era,
21:40but if that's associated
21:42to successful teams
21:43and teams that brought joy
21:45to our supporters
21:46and the club,
21:47more than welcome.
21:49It shows you, doesn't it,
21:50that at that time
21:52they didn't care about,
21:54it was all about the victory,
21:55which is very much
21:56the case now, isn't it?
21:57Yeah, it is,
21:58and especially now.
21:59In modern football,
22:00the margins
22:01and the results,
22:02you see it's one goal
22:04most of the times,
22:05a lot of the times.
22:06And that defines
22:08whether you win or not.
22:08So, you have to be
22:10happy and comfortable
22:12dealing with those
22:13small margins
22:14and find ways to win it.
22:16Okay, well,
22:16see you soon, Matt.
22:17Thank you, guys.
