00:00Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:18up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on
00:22this Monday the 20th of October.
00:25Chatting about the Chats, we'll have a look at the reactions at Chatham's FA Cup draw.
00:32T20 blast from the past, former Kent County legend Darren Stevens rejoins County side as
00:38staff.
00:40And walking a mile in their stadium, meet Xavier Wiggins who's trying to get to the 92 professional
00:45stadiums in 92 days.
00:50But first here's your sports news, Folkston and Victor pulled off an unlikely win at their
00:54new 3G pitch despite being a man down.
00:58Striker Joe Piggott scored the first goal at the new pitch in front of more than 1,300
01:03fans, managing to level the score 2-2.
01:06Manager Jay Saunders believes the new pitch will bring a positive impact to a new generation
01:09and bring more younger audiences to watch the match as well. Invicta will face off against
01:14Lewis in the Ithman League Premier in their next match.
01:19We can hear now from the striker after the game.
01:23Fans were really nice to me.
01:26A nice round of applause, which I wasn't really expecting, I think it was 10 years ago now.
01:33So, yeah, no, great memories and it was a massive day in my career and, yeah, thankful really.
01:38But overall, yeah, pretty disappointed with the result.
01:44Yeah, first half was really disappointing to concede three goals like we did.
01:52Yeah, it's like breathing in asbestos, to be honest.
01:56But, yeah, no, the second half was pretty positive.
02:00I thought we could have nicked another goal to make it 3-2.
02:04But, yeah, the fourth goal is an absolute killer.
02:06I think it was like a triple deflection or something like that.
02:08But, yeah, overall a disappointing day, but a lot of positives to take from the second half, I think.
02:16And it's great news for Kent cricket fans as former player and Kent legend Darren Stevens
02:20rejoins the county side as the new bowling consultant.
02:23After claiming 864 wickets in his three-decade-long career starting in 1997,
02:29Stevens departed from the team at the end of the 2022 season.
02:32So far in his player retirement, he's taken on an assistant coach position
02:35for the Essex women's Tier 1 team, as well as a consultancy role with Kent men's first team.
02:40He's now working closely with bowling coach Sam Falkler,
02:43batting coach Jaheed Ali and head coach Adam Hollyoak starting from the 2026 season.
02:49And an unfortunate turn of events for rugby fans as Canterbury Rugby Club faces a loss
02:53in their National League 2 East match against Old Albanian.
02:57They started strong with a try from No. 8 Tyler Oliver,
03:00but their lead was short-lived as the Old Albanians ramped up their speed
03:04and secured two more tries before the first quarter.
03:07Despite the Albanians' poor discipline, costing them penalties and a yellow card,
03:10Canterbury were unable to break through, as Joss Skelsey sealed the victory with a seventh try.
03:15Even with Canterbury's best efforts, the game ended with a score of 43-31 to Old Albanian.
03:21And it was a great start to the season for the Folkestone Amateur Boxing Club,
03:24with two new debutantes making winning starts.
03:27Richie Samuels and Paul Milton both made their debut,
03:30with Milton taking a unanimous points decision over his three rounds
03:35against East Coast ABC's Dan Brooklyn.
03:37Though initially evenly matched against his opponent,
03:41Samuels went up a gear to secure points division and his first victory.
03:45Senior boxer Abdullah Ahmad faced Jamal Harbard from Rubble's Boxing Academy,
03:50with Harbard claiming a majority points decision.
03:53Now let's take a look at the football results from across the county.
03:56Well, it's a beautiful day here in the south-east at Prince's Park,
04:01as the Darts are competing to climb further up the Isthmian League Premier table,
04:05as they face off with Potter's Bar.
04:07Well, it ties to the skies at the beginning,
04:09as the keeper launches the ball over Potter's Bar and almost into the box.
04:13It's a rough scrap for the ball, but it's won by Brian Adams playing for the Blues.
04:18And with the ball at his feet, he weaves it past the defenders and glides it into the net,
04:22marking the ninth minute and giving them the lead. A very strong start for Potter's Bar.
04:27But not long after Dartford's strike back, Callum Jones receives a pass and puts it in the box.
04:33The opposition does intercept it, deflecting it away from goal and back into the Darts' possession.
04:38Dance leans back to score, but he's taken out by Harry Brandt, who just floors him.
04:43The ref then gives Dartford the penalty, taking full advantage of this.
04:47Dance just pushes it into the back of the net, equalising the scores only five minutes after Potter's Bar's first goal.
04:53And they just can't stop. Jones bursts down the left-hand side and manages to send a pass to the waiting boot of Dean
04:58to put the score up to 2-1.
05:01The Darts manage to earn a free kick outside the box, with Samir Kurath as lobbing it towards the goal.
05:06It doesn't find its target, but Joe Tennant takes it down and hits it first time to give them a two-goal lead.
05:11Can they keep this energy up in the second half?
05:14And they do, only a couple of minutes after the whistle blows, with Sam Okoye passing to the right side to find Dance again,
05:20who chalks up his third goal, earning himself a hat-trick. What a game he's having.
05:25And the Darts will be pleased to earn three points there.
05:28A great showing, especially coming back from 1-0 down and winning a second consecutive game.
05:35And while the Darts happily collect three points, others in the Isthmian League Premier weren't so lucky.
05:39With Ramsgate failing to Brentwood Town at home, and Chatham and Folkestone collecting a point each for their respective draws.
05:46Then up to League Two, and Gilliam had a tough game away to Grimsby, losing 1-0 and collecting two red cards for Hutton and Little.
05:54And finally, in the National League South, Ebbsfleet manage a 2-1 win over Dorking Wanderers.
05:58Maidstone finish Farnborough with two goals to none, but Dover only manage a draw to Chippenham, and the Angels fail to beat Horsham.
06:05That's all for this week's Football Roundup.
06:09Now, the first opponent for Chatham Town FC in their historic FA Cup appearance has been revealed.
06:14The Chats will head to Derbyshire to face National League Northside Buxton for their first FA Cup match in nearly a century.
06:21Alfie Rowe went down to Chatham Town's Beauville Stadium on the night to see how fans reacted to the draw.
06:26What starts out as a training day like any other is really anything but.
06:35Players calmly run through their drills, but fans can barely contain their excitement.
06:40It's probably the best day of our Chatham Town Sporting life.
06:43I've been grinning since 5 past 5 on Saturday evening.
06:47Chatham in the first round of the FA Cup, you cannot go wrong.
06:50As night falls over the stadium, attention turns to the big question.
06:56Who will Chatham Town play in the first round of the FA Cup?
07:00Crowds gather and the draw begins.
07:03Anticipation builds as fixture after fixture is announced.
07:07And then...
07:08National League North team, Buxton FC, are the chosen opponent.
07:14It was one of them we kind of wanted a big draw if we could in terms of from a revenue point of view.
07:21But from a winnable game, it's definitely achievable.
07:24Could have been better maybe in regards to bigger team, bigger club, bigger ticket sales and things like that.
07:30But yeah, more chance of probably getting through into the next round.
07:34And then maybe we'll meet a bigger team in the next round.
07:36I'm quite confident the boys will do it.
07:38It's a winnable game.
07:40Obviously, we would have liked a bigger team away for a good away day.
07:43But I think it's winnable.
07:44Get us through to the second round, I reckon.
07:46We're delighted.
07:47So, obviously, Northern team, we don't know much about them.
07:50However, it's a good chance, obviously, us to try and get to the second round against the National League Northside.
07:56Try and get to the second round.
07:57Obviously, the club hasn't done that for a lot of years.
07:59So, ideally, it's probably a really good opportunity to do it.
08:02And yeah, we're all really excited about the next game, really.
08:05Despite some reservations...
08:07Fans are sure to get behind the team.
08:12And with the Chats faithful in the stands, all that's left is for the boys to finish the job on the pitch.
08:20Alfie Rowe for KMTV in Chatham.
08:22In other news, Gillingham will head to Wales to face off against Newport County.
08:31And Ebbsfleet United will face off with Grimsby Town.
08:35But now, football fans have been known to travel far and wide to support their club.
08:39But Gillingham's hosted a fan on quite the adventure.
08:42Xavier Wiggins is hoping to become the first person to walk to all 92 professional football clubs in just 92 days.
08:49Priestfield Stadium marked the 71st stadium on his journey, which has seen him walk more than 1,600 miles,
08:55all to shine a light on the community work that football clubs do.
08:57I went down to the stadium to find out more.
09:00How much do you love the beautiful game?
09:03Enough to walk 1,600 miles, the equivalent of 61 marathons every day for more than two months?
09:09No, me neither.
09:10But that's what one football fan, Xavier Wiggins, is doing.
09:13Walking across the country to each of the 92 professional stadiums in 92 days.
09:17And if he succeeds, he'll be the first in history to complete the challenge.
09:21And he's just arrived at Priestfield, making it his 71st stadium,
09:25all to highlight the work that football clubs do for their community.
09:28I'm on day 74.
09:30Here at Gillingham is ground 71.
09:33I think it's 1,600 miles, about 3.5 million steps.
09:41And I'm doing it specifically to shine a light on the good stuff that football is doing.
09:45Because they're not bankrolled by the football clubs.
09:48Whether it's the Manchester United Foundation or Gillingham, they're not bankrolled.
09:51They're standalone charities and they need the support of the community
09:55because they're supporting that community as well.
09:58If I were to go up to a random football fan on the street and ask them,
10:01how is your club doing at the moment?
10:02They might tell me about the growing injury list,
10:04their concerns with the new manager, or maybe last Saturday's result away.
10:08But what Gilles and Xavier are keen to change
10:11is they want people to be more aware of the charity and community efforts
10:14that their clubs are doing off the pitch.
10:17There's community programmes going on.
10:19That's working with a variety of different entities around the community.
10:23As Xavier mentioned, whether that's kids' football,
10:25where we want to create a lasting habit of enjoying physical activity
10:28and have a lifelong association with the national game.
10:32Whether it's in schools encouraging positive behaviour
10:35and fulfilling their potential through the educational routes.
10:37or it can be a real positive impact on bringing communities together
10:41that need a bit of support with actual mental health
10:44or various other challenges in their life.
10:46And football can bring those people together.
10:48The Gillingham Foundation are still in the process of applying for charity status,
10:52but are focusing on their community efforts,
10:54including holding a yearly grassroots youth football tournament at Priestfield.
10:58Xavier's got 21 football clubs left to go after the Gilles,
11:01and so far he's raised more than £13,000 towards his £20,000 goal,
11:06all going to football-based charities.
11:08He'll be ending his walk at Plymouth's Holm Park,
11:10which would make him the first to visit the 92 stadiums in 92 days.
11:14Finn McDermott for KMTV in Gillingham.
11:16He's now reached day 80 on his journey
11:23and just stopped off at his own club, AFC Wimbledon.
11:27But it looks like we've reached half-time,
11:29which does mean it is time for a break.
11:30But coming up, we're going to be learning all about a sport
11:33you might not have heard too much about,
11:35and that's lacrosse.
11:36Fun fact, lacrosse has three different sticks,
11:38you might have seen those,
11:39and the largest one, the goalkeeper's, is called a spoon,
11:42and the shortest one, quite inventively, is called a shorty.
11:46All that and more after this short break.
12:16All that and more after this short break.
12:16All that and more after this short break.
18:18The new hoist means that for young people who can't support their weight,
18:21they can be equestrians with ease.
18:23Finn McDermid for KMTV in Dartford.
18:29Fun fact, the horse's name is Jeremy,
18:31named after the leader of Dartford Council, Jeremy Kite.
18:34And in other news, don't forget,
18:35you can keep up to date with all the latest football news
18:37by reading Kent Online.
18:40But did you also know you can have your weekly digest of Jill's news
18:43sent directly to your email inbox?
18:46Just search Kent Online email alerts and sign up on the website
18:49for all the latest written transfer news, match reports and interviews.
18:53And if the Jill's isn't your cup of tea,
18:55well, there's plenty more email alerts to choose from,
18:57including all the latest non-league football news too.
19:02Now, staying on football for a moment,
19:03as we're getting into the winter months,
19:05some poor souls on a muddy Sunday league pitch
19:08might be considering a move to a different sport.
19:11Well, how about lacrosse?
19:12It's a niche sport that I hadn't heard much about until now,
19:16and I try some very niche sports.
19:18Check out my underwater hockey piece I did.
19:20But it could be your next go-to.
19:23I spoke to Corey Miller.
19:24He plays for a university team here in Kent as a defender,
19:27and he joined me earlier to talk me through the sport that,
19:30fun fact, is the national sport of Canada.
19:34Well, Corey Miller joins me now.
19:35So, Corey, talk us through a bit about the game of lacrosse.
19:39How is it played?
19:39So, with lacrosse, it's generally broken up into three different segments.
19:44You've got the offence, the midfield, and the defence.
19:46And generally, it's a very fast-paced game with rolling subs.
19:51So, for the most part, many sports tend to have very few goals scored.
19:56But with lacrosse, it's quite different,
19:57because it's so easy, I suppose, to break past the defence and score a goal.
20:02They all have many goals on either side.
20:04So, give us an idea of the sort of scope of it.
20:07What would be an average score in a lacrosse game?
20:11So, generally, it does depend on the team,
20:13but it roughly tends to be, I'd say, about 15 points average.
20:18Oh, right, OK.
20:19Yeah. So, with the game, it's actually broken down into four quarters of 15 minutes.
20:24So, it's very fast-paced.
20:26And with that, in the midst of it, you have constant subs out.
20:31And, yeah.
20:31Sounds a bit like American football in that sense of those 15-minute quarters.
20:34I think, I don't know much about the sport,
20:37but I've heard and I've seen those images of those,
20:40I don't know what you would call them, sticks with nets on the end of them.
20:43Is there a word for them?
20:44So, we just call them lacrosse sticks,
20:46but there's a specific name for each different one.
20:49OK.
20:49So, the most common one is a shorty.
20:51So, it's sort of roughly about that big.
20:54That would be given to the offence and the midfielders.
20:58You also have what is called a pole, which is for the defenders.
21:02Obviously, they need to defend their territory.
21:03They have a six-foot stick that they need to hold and defend.
21:08And then the final one is a spoon,
21:10which has got quite a big head for the goalie
21:13to obviously try to help defend as best as possible.
21:16I see.
21:16And you touched on those different roles there.
21:19How many people are there on a team?
21:20So, on a team, it tends to be,
21:22depends on what type you're playing.
21:24So, the standard lacrosse has got ten people.
21:27You've got one goalie, three defenders,
21:29three midfielders and three offences.
21:31However, it does kind of change and vary.
21:34So, in terms of poles, long poles,
21:37you can have up to four on a team.
21:39There's a special role called an LSM,
21:41which is long pole, sort of centre-mid.
21:44And they're allowed to go into the opposing quarter
21:47and essentially be a midfielder with a pole,
21:49which gives them great advantage for doing what's called a ground ball
21:52if the ball is to drop on the floor.
21:53But also, when the game starts,
21:55there's something called a face-off.
21:57And that's where the ball is set in between both teams at the very start.
22:01And they essentially need to wrestle the ball
22:03and swipe it back to their team
22:04or run forward for what's called a fast break.
22:07Right, sort of like a tip-off in basketball.
22:09Essentially, yeah.
22:10And their heads are designed to be extra flexible.
22:13Yeah.
22:13OK, brilliant.
22:14And tell us a bit about your own experience with the sport.
22:17Where did you start?
22:19So, with me, I personally started in the second year of university.
22:22Now, I've been through many different sports, actually.
22:25I've come from fencing, from volleyball, from swimming.
22:29And nothing really sort of suited me quite well.
22:32And I recall doing rugby in secondary school.
22:35And I did quite like that.
22:36But I did fall out of it as sort of studies got a bit heavy.
22:39And I really wanted to get back into that sort of laddish,
22:43sort of strong contact sport.
22:44And I thought, well, I want to start something that's completely new
22:48because lacrosse is quite an unheard-of niche sport.
22:51If I'm to start at this point,
22:53it's going to be completely new for me and everyone else.
22:55So, whatever skills I learn and develop,
22:57it's going to be from that point forward.
22:59I see.
22:59And you mentioned there that it's a contact sport.
23:03How dangerous is it?
23:05Are there a lot of injuries?
23:06Well, yeah, actually, it's a fair few.
23:09There's quite a lot of torn ACLs with a face-off.
23:11And for the most part, we do have some rules and gear to protect yourself.
23:16So, as you can see on the back, you have a helmet.
23:19So, it's very important that you wear a helmet and gloves.
23:22Ideally, a gun shield.
23:23But you also have an excess of arm guards and a chest piece.
23:28But that tends to be more if you want to have that extra protection.
23:31I mean, me, myself, for actually fracturing my thumb playing the game,
23:34yeah, I got hit by what's called a tomahawk check.
23:37And, ooh, not nice.
23:38Well, I'm going to ask you about your most memorable moment.
23:42Was it that or was it maybe something a bit nice of scoring a specific goal?
23:45And actually, before I get to that, what position do you tend to play?
23:48Oh, so me personally, I'm a defense.
23:50So, I'm what's considered a D.
23:52And we tend to change our position based on how well we can match the opposing player.
23:56Because they might be really fast or whatever.
23:59I see.
24:00And so, yeah, tell me about your favorite moment playing lacrosse.
24:02So, with me, it's got to be, I don't recall exactly when,
24:07but there was this one point where everything just clicked for me.
24:11And I managed to get the ball.
24:13And with a long pole, you can do really fast shots.
24:16And I managed to set up some really good assists
24:19and immediately pass it to the offense.
24:21It's got some great goals.
24:22Brilliant.
24:23And I'm quite curious about, so, in football, you know,
24:26you've got all these different attributes that make a player.
24:29Their speed, maybe their shooting.
24:30What is it in lacrosse that is that sort of X factor that really propels you?
24:35And because it's such a, it's not a very natural kind of movement to me
24:39to have this stick and then to kind of pivot your body.
24:41When I think of throwing, you think of distance.
24:43What is that?
24:44Is it speed?
24:44Is it power?
24:45Talk to us a bit about what makes a player.
24:47Honestly, it's teamwork.
24:48Because lacrosse is so heavy on the dynamic that everyone is going to get beaten.
24:54Everyone is going to lose the ball.
24:55And it's so important that all the other players pick up that responsibility
24:58to then step in and try to contest that ball furthermore.
25:02Now, it is really important to be sort of fast and agile.
25:06However, when someone is running towards you,
25:10there's not a whole lot that you can do.
25:11So it's really important to have your supporting players to be there
25:13to pick your other sides.
25:15Brilliant.
25:16Well, thank you so much for your time, Corey.
25:18Really interesting to hear about what is quite a niche sport,
25:20but there are places to play it in Kent.
25:23Yes, in fact, so I play for the University of Kent.
25:26I know also in Christchurch you can play that.
25:28But those are more universities.
25:29In fact, many different cities play.
25:32So you can join Canterbury City, which I hear they've got a match coming very soon.
25:37All right.
25:37Well, good luck to them and thank you for joining us.
25:39Lovely.
25:41Great to chat to Corey there.
