00:00Hello and welcome along to Invictus Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:20up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:22I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on this Monday 6th October.
00:30Oh, sorry about that, some technical difficulties there, but our first story is Derby defeat
00:37for Dover.
00:38We'll be having a look at the football results from around the county.
00:42Sorry about this technical difficulty, what you're seeing now is a little sneak peek of
00:46some of the Gilles results, I'm sure many people do know what to expect there, sorry
00:51about that, some technical difficulties.
00:53We'll be bringing you your montage of your stories to come very shortly.
00:58So let's have a look.
01:00We can say walking more than a mile in cricket shoes, we'll meet the man walking a marathon
01:05in cricket gear, all to help his very close friend who is battling cancer.
01:11And we'll also take a look at the international dance competition that's hosted right here
01:15in Medway.
01:16It's an incredible competition.
01:17I went down myself, around 10,000 dancers all competing for a chance for the finals in
01:24the Royal Albert Hall.
01:26But before all of that, we can have a round-up of our headlines.
01:30And it's another loss for the Gilles, after ending their record unbeaten, I believe it was
01:3621 games, which they lost that record the week before last.
01:40They lost to Harrogate Town.
01:41They've also suffered another close defeat, this time at the hands of MK Dons.
01:48It was certainly an unbelievable battle for the Gilles as they tried to battle their way
01:51back from 3-0 down.
01:53And they almost managed it, with goals from Seb Palmer Holden and Johnny Williams.
01:58But it wasn't enough to earn them three points.
02:01They did have a strong performance with majority possession and 14 shots, but only four of those
02:06managed to be on target.
02:09We can hear a bit from midfielder Johnny Williams now.
02:13Yeah, I think, you know, we've showed throughout this season, we've scored, well, even back
02:18in the last season, we've scored a lot of goals in the second half.
02:21Maybe we can start scoring more in the first half and starting a bit better and not wait
02:25until we go behind and getting the first goal will be huge in these games.
02:29But to be honest, credit to MK Dons.
02:32They're going to be around it, I think.
02:34They've got a good side, good manager, and we went head-to-head and possibly could have
02:39drawn on another day one that game.
02:41And a goal for you.
02:42You just talked me through that.
02:43It seemed a pinpoint cross.
02:44I think it was Sam Gale that had picked you out.
02:47It was a lovely finish as well.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Yeah.
02:51Probably don't go for many dives, but a great, great pass from Sam.
02:55He gave me one before, 3-0.
02:56I probably should have scored that one.
02:58It's probably the easier chance.
02:59But, yeah, I don't need to keep getting in positions.
03:02It was great to hit the back of the net and give us something, you know, a chance of getting
03:05something in the last two or three minutes.
03:07And, yeah, hopefully long may that continue and keep getting in the bulk of the right areas
03:11and, yeah, hopefully add a few more.
03:13Now over to rugby, and it was a strong game for the Tunbridge Juddians who managed to beat
03:18Birmingham Molesley by 14 points over the weekend.
03:22Birmingham hit the ground running in the National League One match, scoring a try within
03:26ten minutes.
03:27But the Juddians hit back hard with the final result, ending in a 31-17 victory for the home
03:32team.
03:33The Juddians remain in seventh in National League One, and their next three games are
03:37against three of the top four sides, with Blackheath away next.
03:42In some other news, Kent Cricket has been celebrating its star players at an end-of-season awards night
03:46in Canterbury.
03:48Kent batsman Ben Compton was the main winner for the second time in four seasons, as he
03:54was named Men's Player of the Year.
03:56Compton is the second-highest run scorer in County Championship Division 2, though he was
04:01not the only one recognised, with Isabella James crowned Women's Club Player of the Year,
04:06after taking 22 wickets in her debut season after she joined the county from Cambridgeshire.
04:12Now in some slightly sadder news, a football club has been left counting the cost of a break-in after
04:17a forced entry into its clubhouse and storage units.
04:21Rochester United chairman Matt Hume says the club is devastated after discovering its ground
04:26in Stroud has been ransacked overnight.
04:29He was alerted around half-six this morning when staff arrived to open up and found a gate
04:34padlock on the floor at its stadium in Reid Court Road.
04:38The chairman said they've stolen three of our trimmers, an air blower and even taken money from
04:43sweep machines for the kids. A police spokesperson confirmed the force was called to report of
04:48a burglary and an investigation is now underway.
05:02Well, here's a quick look at the football fixtures happening around the county this weekend.
05:08Well, it's a cross-county derby for us this weekend in the National League South.
05:12Here at Longmead Stadium, Dover Athletic have travelled from the west to face off with the Angels in the east.
05:18Simple as you like and the Whites play it through the back, sending a cross into the box which goes untouched,
05:24landing at the feet of Jalen Jones who slams it past Angels keeper Jacob Adams to open the score sheet.
05:30A lovely strike from the midfielder.
05:32And the first half ends with Dover ahead by the lone goal, but only a few minutes into the second
05:37and Bailey Aikhurst rifles a shot at the keeper who parries it to Scott Wagstaff who just nudges it in by the near post.
05:44A tidy finish from the Angels captain.
05:47And it hasn't even been ten minutes and the Angels still look strong.
05:51Aikhurst is galloping down that left side and he crosses it to Brodie Peart who hits it first time in that same sweet spot at the near post.
05:58Not much that Mitch Walker can do in that situation.
06:01He needs more from his defenders who just let Peart take that.
06:04But what a performance from Aikhurst.
06:06And as we continue, there's some more action at either end.
06:09Is that a bicycle kick from Academy product Luke Baptiste?
06:12Well, it's not enough and in the end Tunbridge pull off the victory at home, happy to collect three points from the newly promoted Dover side.
06:19Well elsewhere in the National League South, an early own goal from Dagenham and Redbridge put the Maidstone away support in a good mood from the start.
06:27Needing only another from Theo Kurteran to seal the win away in London.
06:31And for Ebbsfleet, they were saved from a loss by a 95th minute equaliser from Pemi Adoroju, adding to their recent draw streak with three in the last five games.
06:40And all the goals coming in the second half.
06:42I feel bad for any fans who left after the half-time whistle.
06:46In the mid-week, Ebbsfleet will travel to Cray Valley Paper Mills in the Kent Senior Cup.
06:50Maidstone will travel to the coast and attempt to hurt Herne Bay's trophy chances.
06:54And Tunbridge host Sittingbourne also in the Cup, while Dover are on their own facing Horsham in the league fixture.
07:01Then back up to League Two and it was a difficult result to swallow for the Jills.
07:05A Sam Gale-owned goal and only the sixth minute sealed their fate, with two more strikes haunting their second half.
07:12Some late goals from Seb Palmer, Holden and Johnny Williams weren't enough to keep the dream alive as they record back-to-back losses after dropping their 21-game win streak.
07:21They'll next see Cheltenham at home and hopefully they can get back to the winning ways that fans have become used to.
07:27And last but certainly not least, we head to the Isthmian Premier, where our Kent sides were trying to get to the next round of the FA Trophy.
07:34With the Chats seeing a toothless game against Needham Market, but managing to go through three penalties to two.
07:40On the other hand, Folkestone and Victor go three goals to Dunstable's one to see them through to the next round.
07:45But it's an unfortunate loss for both Dartford and Ramsgate, who are knocked out of the competition by lower league opponents.
07:52Dartford one goal to two against Hadley, while Ramsgate are hit with a 4-1 loss away to Leatherhead.
07:59Coming up, the Rams have Wingate and Finchley and hopefully they can cure their away blues with a win.
08:04And the same goes for Dartford, who travelled to Brentwood. Folkestone will head to Southend.
08:08And the Chats will see if they can keep their FA Cup hopes alive.
08:11After demolishing Deal Town in the third round, they'll head to Tunbridge in the fourth.
08:16And what's that? The sound of full time on this week's Football Roundup.
08:21And in some more news, a man from Rochester is taking on a full marathon walk in cricket gear.
08:2826.2 miles from the Hundred of Who Academy to High Halstow Cricket Club and back in honour of his friend suffering from stage four cancer.
08:37Joe Carter Mills is doing the challenge to raise £1,000 for his friend Mr Fredericks, also known as a teacher, cricketer and much loved part of the Hundred of Who community.
08:47Well, Joe joins me now to talk more about the walk. Thank you so much for joining us in the studio, Joe.
08:52Thank you for having me on.
08:53No, not at all. Now, I first want to ask, obviously, some very difficult news, I'm assuming, when you first heard it.
09:00When did you first know that you were going to do this to raise the money?
09:04I've been thinking about trying to do something to support Mr Fredericks for a long while.
09:09And I was just trying to find the right ways to do it. And we've been sort of trying to navigate what the best ways were.
09:14But I've been thinking for a good few weeks to try and find the best way to honour his legacy and show our support for him.
09:21Amazing. And how did the two of you meet? Was it teaching? Was it cricket? Tell us a bit about that.
09:26Yeah, so we met at the Hundred of Who Academy. We started at the same time. And so, yeah, we followed our teaching careers through the same timeframe and always been at the Hundred of Who together.
09:37Amazing. And what made you want to do it all in cricket gear?
09:40Well, that is Mr Fredericks. He is Mr Cricket. You know, we always used to make a laugh and joke about every time that we wanted to play football,
09:47we'd always suggest getting the cricket nets out. So I thought, what better way to honour him than by doing it in his cricket gear
09:54and doing it for his sport in particular.
09:57Absolutely. And walking a whole marathon, is this something you're used to? Have you been doing much training?
10:02A long while ago, I would have said, yeah, absolutely. My fitness levels have declined over the years.
10:08But, yeah, I think it's definitely something that I'm training for and I'll be working towards with only a short time left to get it all in place.
10:16I see. And what have the school said in terms of everything going on and what you're doing?
10:22Yeah, they've been massively supportive. We're trying all that we can to support myself and what I'm going to be doing.
10:29But obviously, this is not about me. This is about Mr Fredericks. And so they've given him and myself nothing but support for this entire plan.
10:39That's amazing. And I believe we do have an image of your GoFundMe campaign, which we can get on the screen just now.
10:45Talk us through what prompted that decision and how the fundraising efforts have been going.
10:50Yeah, the fundraising has been going really well. I only set it into action yesterday evening.
10:57And so we're already racking up some great donations. And so getting it shared around on social media has been by far the best way of getting us getting that support and getting that put out into society.
11:09So, yes, it's been going really well so far.
11:12That's amazing. And very quickly, we don't have much time left. Can you tell us a bit about where that money is going to specifically?
11:18So I spoke to Mr Fredericks and he said that he wants it to go back into the community itself.
11:23He said that both the High House of Cricket Club and the 100 of who have given him nothing but support throughout his playing career with cricket,
11:30but for his teaching career as well. And so he wants that money to go back to the kids.
11:34And he wants to make sure that they can grow up enjoying as much sport as he has throughout his time.
11:41That's amazing. We haven't got much time left, but we'll be catching up with you after the break. See you in just a few minutes.
11:47Just a few minutes.
12:17Bye.
12:18Bye.
12:19Bye.
12:20Bye.
12:21Bye.
12:22Bye.
17:23Thank you so much for your time.
18:23to remission in 2022. In 2021, though, Megan began raising money for a range of cancer
18:30charities in Kent, including Breast Cancer Now and My Shining Star, to help support others
18:35who fight similar battles. Over those past five years, she has organised races at Buckmore
18:40Park, where people dress up and name their teams after symptoms of cancer, both to raise
18:45awareness and to create a positive atmosphere for those struggling. But she says that this
18:49year's event was the best yet. This is the first year that we actually sold out completely.
18:55So we ended up with over 100 people turning up for the event, which was more than I expected
18:59as it was. People come dressed up in outfits and everything. And it just looked brilliant.
19:05Everyone was in a good mood, really excited. And it just went really well. Everyone seemed
19:11to come away enjoying themselves. So normally at the event, we've normally raised between
19:16three and four thousand. And then we normally make a little bit extra on top as well. Last
19:22year, we made seven grand in total. This year, we're already nearly at the seven thousand
19:27mark just from the event alone. So I think we're probably going to get nearly eight thousand
19:33mark this year, which will then push the total over the five years to thirty thousand, which
19:37is brilliant. As my mum always said to me, something positive will come out of something
19:42negative. So as Megan continues to share her message
19:46of channeling negativity into positivity, the race to support others is just beginning.

19:55And in some dancing news now, more than 10,000 dancers from 60 different countries have foxtrotted
20:01into Medway this week for the 72nd International Dance Festival. The competition is the official
20:07qualifier for the prestigious finals at the Royal Albert Hall and even features 20 volunteer
20:12translators to make sure the world's dancing talents construct their stuff without any worry.
20:17I waltzed down to the competition earlier.
20:20This week, Medway Sports Centre has been hosting tens of thousands of dancers from 60 different
20:25countries around the world in the International Dance Festival, where the performers can qualify
20:30for the prestigious finals at the Royal Albert Hall. And one dancing duo have come all the way
20:35from Ukraine to compete. But it hasn't been an easy journey.
20:38And I would like to tell about what happens in Ukraine now and the country we're living now,
20:44where we came from. And it's really hard to train as we do. Actually, every night, every night
20:53we hear like booms and we hear... Silence, yeah. Yeah. We hear that the drones, the rockets,
21:03they fly somewhere in here. And yes, and that's really hard. Every night is hard.
21:10Maria and Kostiantine are 10 and 11, joining one of the many groups of young dancers, with other
21:16groups of different styles, ages and abilities also taking part.
21:19I'd almost call it the Battle Royale of Dance. And that's because, as you can see, the performers
21:24have to strut their stuff in large groups, vying for the judges' attention and for their
21:29high rankings. Anyone who says dance isn't a sport certainly hasn't seen it done like
21:34this before.
21:36And with thousands of people here for an event lasting from the morning until the late hours
21:40of the night, volunteer translators have been called in from across the Medway towns to
21:44help the participants.
21:45I think Saturday there was a couple of people that came along. They were looking really just
21:50to prepare themselves for the following day. And so it was good just to be able to converse
21:56with them, just make them feel at ease, just be able to bring them down to the reception,
22:01the main reception area as well, just to welcome them into the front entrance also. And also just
22:08pleasantries. It's just nice to be able to welcome them in from that perspective as well,
22:14and just to make them feel at ease.
22:15This marks the fifth time that Medway have hosted the event, all starting with a coincidental
22:20meeting.
22:21This got started through one of our actual council officers here, having a chance conversation
22:26with a local dance coordinator and it's just built from there. And this is, it's grown
22:32from two days a week to now this festival's five days and it's so popular. It's really
22:38good for the local economy, but you need to go inside and have a look for yourself.
22:42The event runs from 6am until 1 in the morning, so even though the dancers are only on stage
22:47for a few minutes, some could be there for up to 19 hours, making it more of a marathon
22:52than a moonwalk.
22:53Finn McDermid for KMTV in Medway.
22:56Now it's time to remind you you can keep up to date with all the latest sports news, interviews
23:00and features from here on Invicta Sport by heading over to our website kmtv.co.uk and clicking
23:07on the Sport tab. There you'll see videos like this one about a Maidstone-based under-19 American
23:13football club preparing for their summer finals tournament.
23:16In the end, they ended up coming third, but they were ranked first in the nation at the
23:21time. Let's have a look at that video now.
23:24Hey, hey, mama said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.
23:31Long passes, runs into the end zone and clever plays are just some of the weapons that the
23:44South East Legion have used to fight their way to the top of their American Football League.
23:49The under-19 team are based in Maidstone and played their very last game of the season this
23:53month to win their entire division without a single loss. The achievement means that the
23:58team, ranked first in the country for their whole age group, are headed to the national
24:02finals this weekend in October to attempt to earn a trophy and cement their title as the
24:06undisputed number ones.
24:08I don't think we expected it to be as good as it has been. I think we knew we had something
24:13special with the players that are playing at the level they have. But yeah, absolutely
24:19didn't expect it to go this well. But after the first two tournaments, we could see where
24:23it was going. And I think we're on an upward trajectory now.
24:26Some say that American Football is for everyone, and that's because there's so many different
24:31positions that you can play. Cornerback, running back, tackle, linebacker, safety, wide receiver,
24:36fullback, and I haven't even named all of them. And while it sounds complicated, it's
24:40a very simple game. What you're trying to do is get this to the end zone.
24:45Despite that, American Football is still a complicated game, and the players understand
24:50the finals won't be easy. But that hasn't hurt the atmosphere at training one bit.
24:54We're all excited. We're all buzzing for it. We're all like talking within each other,
25:01like, oh, imagine this happens, imagine this happens. We're like hyping ourselves up towards
25:05it because we've come so far, we would hate to lose it.
25:08I'm very optimistic. I come into a lot of games with a very positive atmosphere. We come
25:14there to win. We're not coming for anything else, really. Losing is not an option to us,
25:20really. So at the end of the day, we're going to get it done, and I know we're going to
25:23get it done.
25:24The team have risen the ranks only recently after building and developing their squad,
25:28with coaches putting an emphasis not just on their physical development as players,
25:32but on their mental and personal development as well.
25:35We want our players to go on to some of the great programmes in the UK, the NFL Academy,
25:40Bristol SGS, just two of them. So we're trying to develop football players that think for themselves.
25:47As a coach, we've done our job. If they can do it themselves, and even on game day, lots
25:53of our players, you know, they call the plays, you know, they read the game, they read the
25:58defences if they're on offense and vice versa. So yeah, we're trying to build young men which
26:02are great football players.
26:03The team's motto is hard work, full gas, and as they train for hours in the sweltering heat
26:09ahead of the finals, it isn't hard to see why.
26:11Let's give it a national finals one, yeah?
26:13Let's go.
26:14Hard work!
26:15Full gas!
26:16Hard work!
26:17Finn McDermid for KMTV in Maidstone.
